Needed a night away and saw an offer on Rorys travel club for the Avalon. Swift check-in, however, I was asked to pay up front, which I found a little offensive. The room was spotless, if a little warm, but a desktop fan was swiftly supplied. For some reason, I was allocated a wheelchair room so the shower was a little crowded because of the equipment required for such a facility. Towels were very rough and no shower caps supplied. So bring your own. Restaurant was closed, so dinner was served in the bar, which was not really comfortable. I ordered the chicken wings, followed by seabass. The wings arrived and unfortunately they were covered in a type of paste as opposed to a sauce. They were more of a casserole constituency. First time ever that I left wings behind. The seabass came out swiftly, too swiftly. Before the server had a chance to place it on the table, I saw the huge pile of food. There was a mountain of diced veg and mashed potatoes. The seabass was placed on top, and the whole thing was smothered in a white sauce. I requested that she return it to the kitchen and replace it with plain seabass with the potatoes on the side and no sauce. This was promptly taken care of and was served as it should be. The fish was excellent, melt in the mouth and well cooked. Perfect. Night passed peacefully, except for a rather loud extractor fan outside my bedroom window, which was eventually switched off at 11.26pm. Breakfast was very good, but you have to queue to make your toast because there is only one toaster. Coffee was strong and plentiful. The Avalon is a no frills, budget hotel, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the food portions are enormous, and there is plenty of outside seating for us nasty smokers. In conclusion, it is a really nice place for the price. I would say they get a lot of business people, passing through and families visiting the nearby discovery park. The jewel in their crown is their staff and you certainly won't leave hungry.

2nd visit to this hotel. Check in by Kyle was efficient. Our room was perfect. The decor is lovely and the hotel is clean. We previously ate at the Steakhouse but tried the bar this time and were severely let down. We had to request cutlery, we were served a bottle of wine which had already been opened and used (no ice bucket). The cocktails were served in wine glasses with absolutely no finesse. The choices for starters and deserts were OK and tasted fine but the main course was like a school dinner. We requested a quieter table but the noise from behind the bar left us no choice but to move on. Breakfast was tasty with plenty of choice. We're not completely put off but would opt for the Steakhouse again next time.

Got married here on the 10.08.2019 From the moment I walked in to start with the preparations, to the moment we came for our anniversary, they have been so amazing, Margaret looked after us so well, the guys in the bar the whole night, everyone!!! everyone told us that the atmosphere on The wedding night was on another level, I didn’t write here before but today I called to book for a dinner and Linda, the woman who took my call, she was the sweetest person ever!! She just made my day, and made me feel so special and to kind of go back to our wedding night!! looking forward to having dinner again there as my experience in this hotel is always another level!! Location very convenient: stone’s throw from the train station and right in the town centre near the castle and some really nice bars. Their bar also serves good food and is a decent spot for a late night drink. Be aware however, that the front door shuts at 10 and you can only gain access from the buzzer at the adjacent bar and they are quite strict on guest access. If you are a couple make sure to select for 2 when making the booking. Nevertheless the breakfast is extensive, and the rooms comfortable so thumbs up overall.
