Dr. Self reveals how these three distinct layers of fragrance are directly tied to vapor pressure—the tendency of molecules to evaporate. Discover why base notes with low vapor pressure linger longest on your skin, while fleeting top notes create those immediate but short-lived impressions.

ABOUT THE CLASS
This 2-hour class combines theory and practice as we demystify the science behind the evaporation of perfume materials.
You'll observe a live demonstration using a simple laboratory setup with a manometer and beakers to visualize vapor pressure differences between various aromatic compounds.
We'll analyze how these differences create the top, middle, and base note structure that defines modern perfumery, and explore how mixing compounds affects their collective behavior.
What is vapor pressure? What can vapor pressure measurement tell us about a perfume, and what can it not tell us? Does the vapor pressure of a substance lower or increase as it is in the company of other substances?

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR, JULIAN SELF, Ph.D.
Dr. Julian Self is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Polytechnique Montreal. He studies phase equilibria and liquid solutions, in contexts ranging from electronic waste recycling to electrolytes used in batteries. He asks questions such as: When do liquid mixtures freeze or separate?
Dr. Self received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2021 in materials science where he studied liquid electrolytes for conventional batteries, along with newer batteries which could be based on calcium or magnesium.

When we host a class or workshop, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials.
