Join Litquake and Left Margin LIT in Oakland on February 13th, 2024, to celebrate the publication of Lauren Markham's A Map of Future Ruins. Markham traveled to Greece in 2021 to explore her own Greek heritage and report on the aftermath of a devastating fire that destroyed Europe's largest refugee camp on the island of Lesbos. Drawing on her extensive experience as a journalist focused on migration issues, Markham's book delves into the complexities between Greece's past and present, mythology and history, and nostalgia and reality. A Map of Future Ruins has received critical acclaim for its powerful exploration of the global immigration crisis.

The event will take place at the brand-new Clio's bookstore cafe and features a conversation between Markham and author Ingrid Rojas Contreras. Contreras, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, will discuss her memoir, The Man Who Could Move Clouds, which explores her family's lineage of curanderos and shamans. Admission to the launch event is free, with food and drink available for purchase. Following the conversation, there will be a book sale and signing.

Lauren Markham is an acclaimed author and journalist, known for her award-winning book The Far Away Brothers. Her work has been featured in prestigious publications such as The Atlantic, Harper's, and The New York Times Magazine. Ingrid Rojas Contreras, born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, has received numerous accolades for her memoir and fiction. Her debut novel, Fruit of the Drunken Tree, was a New York Times editor's choice.
