Join Professor Sri-Kartini Leet at her Inaugural Lecture, "Expanding the Photographic Archive: Framing Identity, Community, and History Through Participatory Practice", on November 30th, 2023 at the Gateway Lecture Theatre in High Wycombe. This event, held at Buckinghamshire New University, is open to researchers, students, industry professionals, and anyone interested in the history of photography and the practice of visual anthropology.
Professor Sri-Kartini Leet will address the hidden nature of representation in the history of photography and visual anthropology. Often, the process of production is repressed, resulting in the reproduction and reinforcement of dominant social relations. The lecture will also delve into the assumption that photographic archives are neutral repositories of facts, when in reality, power relations continue to shape them.
During the lecture, Professor Sri-Kartini Leet will discuss her participatory art projects, including "I Dream of Home", which involved 90 participants contributing images symbolic of their idea of home. By embracing the input and voices of community members, her projects aim to visualize states of mind informed by lived experience, memory, and fantasy. Sri-Kartini will also share insights from a recent community-based project for Amersham Museum, where young adults contributed words and images defining what Amersham means to them.
Professor Sri-Kartini Leet is known for her socially engaged practice and her commitment to positive social change through the arts. With a strong record of initiating and leading projects, she collaborates with local, national, and international organizations to create opportunities for under-represented groups. She holds a PhD in Photography from the University of Kent and has expertise in pedagogy and innovative learning methods.
Don't miss this thought-provoking lecture that explores the intersection of photography, identity, community, and history. Admission is free, so mark your calendars for November 30th, 2023 at the Gateway Lecture Theatre in High Wycombe.
