What a treat to have Laura Purcell talk about the follow-up to her first novel The Silent Companions. That novel was one of her most popular and we can't wait to read The House of Splinters. The evening will be hosted by fellow author JJA Harwood. If you love a classily written haunted house mystery, some early readers have promised the new novel will be even better. A new generation returns to the Bridge to rescue it from ruin, only for buried secrets and past injustices to lay their chill hand upon the families hopes. A perfect blend of the picturesque, the supernatural and dark folk-lore. Are the children safe in the shadow of "the silent companions"? Don't miss this spooky, gothic masterpiece.Doors will open at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

In 2023, the school began its OPAL journey and proudly achieved an OPAL Platinum Award by 2025. Prettygate’s play offer is truly outstanding, ensuring that every child enjoys a rich, engaging, and joyful playtime every single day. The school has developed an impressive range of play spaces and resources, including a large loose-parts store, a natural sandpit, a digging area, water play, den building, music, dressing-up, arts and crafts, a forest area, and a dedicated wheeled play zone. "Spit It Out Staged Reading" is a thought-provoking new play by Alice Stephens, a Creative Writing PhD candidate at the University of Essex. The play delves into the challenges faced by Emily as she bravely embraces her true identity as a transgender woman. Emily grapples with the daunting task of revealing her truth to her loved ones and colleagues, fearing potential rejection and discrimination. Throughout the play, the audience witnesses the strain on Emily's friendships and relationships as she navigates the delicate balance of being openly trans while keeping her professional life and family relationships hidden. Directed by Noah Alfred Pantano, known for his work on 'Standing On A Nail,' this staged reading promises an intimate and emotional experience. The event will take place at patch, located at 24 Trinity Street, Colchester, CO1 1JN on November 17, 2023. Rather than having a fixed ticket price, the organizers have implemented a 'pay what you can' system, allowing individuals to contribute as they are able. Don't miss this powerful and timely production, exploring the complexities of coming out and the resilience of the human spirit.
