When people hear the word ‘horror’, they might often think of violence, fear, and of women in peril. But the relationship between horror and women is far richer – and far more surprising – than many realise.  From the rise of the Gothic in the eighteenth century, women have been at the heart of the horror genre – not just as characters, but as creators. These chilling tales were often written by women, for women, and became a powerful space to explore their deepest fears, desires, and frustrations. Horror offered something radical: a genre that could challenge social norms, question power structures, and give voice to the unspoken. In this fast-paced, four-century journey through literary history, we’ll uncover how women have shaped the horror genre – transforming haunted houses, ghosts, vampires, and monsters into metaphors for real-life struggles. From Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House , from the forgotten women of Romantic poetry to the simmering rage in Jane Eyre , this talk examines how horror has become a vessel for feminist expression. Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Speaker Bio: Dr Joan Passey is a Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Bristol where she specialises in the gothic, horror, and folklore in literature and culture. She has a Masters from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the University of Exeter, both focusing on the gothic and the supernatural. She is a BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker and regularly contributes to and presents for BBC Radio 3, and has spoken at Hay Festival and from the BBC Proms. She edits anthologies for the British Library Tales of the Weird series, with titles including Cornish Horrors: Tales from the Land's End, Our Haunted Shores: Tales from the Coasts of the British Isles, and Phantoms of Kernow: Tales from Haunted Cornwall. Her monograph, Cornish Gothic, 1830-1913 (University of Wales Press, 2023) was the first to define a Cornish Gothic tradition in the nineteenth century, and she co-edited Shirley Jackson's Dark Tales: Reconsidering the Short Fiction (Bloomsbury, 2024) with Robert Lloyd. Testimonials from our guests ⭐ Super Interesting talks! Fun and Informative - Ally S. ⭐ Expertly run, talks are always super informative and a lot of fun! What does our history of murder tell us about Britain and what it means to be British? In this powerful new live event, Professor David Wilson, one of the UK’s leading criminologists, brings his latest book A History of Modern Britain in 20 Murders 1885-2025 to the stage. Known for his gripping storytelling and deep insight into criminal behaviour, Wilson explores murder cases in our nation’s history to discover the times in which they occurred—and what they continue to reveal about Britain today. Some of the cases he considers are well known – Jack the Ripper, James Bulger, Sarah Everard - others less so – The Carbon Copy Murders, Helen Priestly, Rachel Dobkin - with Wilson guiding audiences through more than a century of murders that shaped public consciousness, challenged our sense of self and reflected changing attitudes, values, and fears. Spanning the fall of the British Empire to the present day – with a case discussed in depth on stage - this unique event weaves together true crime and social history in a way that is both unique, enlightening and unforgettable. A must-see for fans of history, criminology, and gripping real-life stories! Ecademi is delighted to announce the "A History of Modern Britain in Twenty Murders Tour" is sponsored by the TRUE CRIME CHANNEL. TRUE CRIME CHANNEL. YOUR FASCINATION. OUR EXPERTISE. Still, when she falls in love with the handsome boy she saves from drowning, she can no longer run from her family's history. Is she destined to live out the habitual story of love and heartbreak, or can she escape the family curse and the mysterious fate that befell her aunt? Oyinkan will discuss her new book before an audience Q&A and book signing. Oyinkan Braithwaite is a Nigerian-British novelist and writer. Her first novel, My Sister, The Serial Killer , was published in 2018 to wide acclaim. It was a Sunday Times bestseller, longlisted for The Booker Prize, shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction, and won the Crime and Thriller Book of the Year in the British Book Awards 2020. Join bestselling authors Bridget Collins and C. J. Cooke for an enthralling evening of folkloric fiction as they delve into their haunting new novels with Jodie Matthews, author of Meet Me At The Surface . The Naked Light is a haunting gothic tale of ancient darkness and a love that defies convention from Bridget Collins, #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of The Binding . Bridget has built a reputation as a storyteller of rare imagination, capable of crafting novels that absorb and terrify in equal measure, and is loved for her immersive worlds, genre-blending fusions of history and horror, and the powerful love stories that hold her novels together. Watching over the village of Haltington is an ancient carving in the ground, known to locals simply as the Face. It was first etched into the chalk when lives were ruled by superstition and stories; by fear of the unknown, of the shadows. The Naked Light follows two women who are drawn to each other but soon find themselves in the Face’s path. The Last Witch is a haunting Gothic historical thriller from C. J. Cooke, the internationally bestselling author of The Book of Witching . In her novels, Cooke takes inspiration from real women she discovers in detailed historical research, and her books have been critically acclaimed for their atmospheric use of time and place. Set in 1485, The Last Witch follows wealthy young wife Helena who is accused of witchcraft and imprisoned. Woven with dark, folkloric magic, it’s a haunting and atmospheric portrait of courage, sisterhood and female power. They will be in conversation with Jodie Matthews, author of Meet Me At The Surface , a ‘strange and beautiful’ ( Observer ) debut inspired by Cornish folklore. Tickets: Standard: £6 Plus Card: £5 Book and Ticket - The Naked Light (RRP £18.99) - £23 Book and Ticket - The Last Witch (RRP £16.99) - £21 For any queries or accessibility requirements please contact events.nottingham@waterstones.com Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Professor Duncan Guest’s Inaugural Lecture | Lecture Theatre 4, Newton Building

Professor Duncan Guest’s Inaugural Lecture | Lecture Theatre 4, Newton Building

Oct 9, 2025 (UTC+1)
Nottingham
Cultural Experiences
In this inaugural lecture Professor Duncan Guest will overview the various themes of research he has been involved in during his career, from the theoretical to the more applied. Much of his theoretical work stems from a fascination with capacity limitations (limitations in the amount of information we can process) and how we process information in memory and attention-based tasks. Professor Duncan Guest’s work has modelled how different processes impact performance in tasks such as categorisation, identification and visual search, measured capacity limitations in memory and imagery and explored how we process and make sense of visual information. He will also discuss how his interests in memory and attention have extended to more applied areas, from work in consumer psychology (Is Urban Decay a good brand name? Would you buy a Starbucks sofa?) to more recent work on mobility scooter safety. As he discusses his research journey Duncan will reflect on what he has learned about the research process, the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches, the pitfalls of theoretical and applied research, what has excited him and disillusioned him, and what, if anything, this means for psychology as a discipline. Biography Duncan is Professor of Cognitive Psychology and Associate Dean for Psychology at NTU. Externally he has had roles as Chair of the BPS Cognitive Psychology Section, Deputy Chair of the BPS Research Board and he is currently Chair of the Association of Heads of Psychology Departments. Prior to joining NTU Duncan had postdoc positions in Psychology departments at the University of Warwick (where he completed his PhD) and Oxford Brookes University and in Marketing departments at Universita Bocconi (Italy) and Università della Svizzera Italiana (Switzerland). Duncan joined NTU as a Lecturer in 2011 and subsequently held positions as Principal Lecturer, Associate Professor, Deputy Head and Head of Department before becoming Associate Dean and Professor in 2024. Duncan’s research focuses mainly on (visual) cognition and its applications. At the heart of his theoretical research is a fascination with capacity limitations (limitations in the amount of information we can process) and how we process information in memory and attention tasks. His work has explored where these limitations come from and how attention influences how we process information in these tasks. He has also applied his interests in memory and attention to more applied areas, ranging from consumer psychology to more recently a focus on mobility scooter safety. Refund policy: You can get a refund if th is event is rescheduled or cancelled. Following a series of breathtaking performances at prestigious European festivals, headline shows across 10 countries, and a tour across Germany and Czechia alongside dark-electro pioneers Project Pitchfork, tAngerinecAt is set to return to the UK to celebrate the release of their new album, Grief. Originating in Ukraine and residing in North Wales, tAngerinecAt embodies a rich tapestry of musical influences that intertwine West and East. The duo conveys a strong anti-war, anti-fascist, and anti-ecocide message, where the hauntingly intimate allure of dark jazz a cappella coexist with the fierce energy of hammering industrial electronic beats and poignant spoken word. It reflects the profound mastery of Ukrainian-born Zhenia Purpurovsky, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, arranger, conductor, and actor, in partnership with the visionary sound designer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Chilton who hails from Britain. With a degree in folkloristics, Purpurovsky adeptly juggles rich cultural symbols, creating a tapestry of meaning. 'Grief' emerges as a masterfully crafted concoction of free-spirited, underground resistance brewed in a cauldron of haunting Twin Peaks-esque soundscapes and cathartic revelations, while shifting between languages. Even with its bleak undertones, this work evokes themes of hope, love, unity, and beauty, providing a counterpoint to escapism by embracing reality and navigating through despair to discover pathways to liberation. Grief is love. Official website ______________________________________ 'I’ve never heard anything quite like this... Chilling and Unsettlingly Beautiful... It’s Stunning' - BBC Wales 'The outfit fuses electronica and drone with industrial flourishes and beautifully dark songwriting… If it doesn’t get your blood pumping then you may as well check yourself into the crematorium…’ - Louder Than War 'Your music is always a magical ritual for me. Glass was a wilder ritual, sometimes even bloodier, a dance on broken glass, but Grief is a different magic, the magic of a hermit, the depths of the sea, cold rocks and a ruined lonely church, in whose bells the wind still blows. Yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like, as if you literally took your heart out of your chest - literally a bare heart, blood, history, everything just screams.' - Marvoy, Prague 'Drawing from the personal and political, the duo have crafted another bold, passionate and artistically accomplished album. It’s certainly a dark and inarguably intense record yet never one that’s devoid of hope. Grief is the sound of perseverance, the triumph of art and the human spirit in the face of adversity.' - Andy Brown, Louder Than War 'It's as if you're someone calling out from ancient times. From the era of the first civilisations, the search for the first shelter, the first home, the first love, the first kiss, the first sex, the first fire. INCREDIBLE!' - Sahin Cetin, Ankara Special guest: Modulator ESP Modulator ESP aka Modulator Experimental Synthesis Project is autistic synth wizard Jez Creek from Nottingham, he makes cosmic synthesiser music, using an array of synths and effects, looped and layered to produce vast shimmering notes, dancing sequences, sparkling chords and deep bass drones from evolving sounds that emerge, mutate & then subside. His set will be a sonic meditation, expect evolving looped synthscapes, with a balance of repetition and change.
