We are thrilled to welcome Cecelia Ahern to Waterstones Liverpool to hear all about her latest release Paper Heart. From the bestselling author of PS I Love You comes a story of finding yourself – and finding your way home. Pip’s world is small. But it’s about to become a whole lot bigger. For years she’s tucked away her dreams, shrinking herself into the space left behind – like the delicate origami she creates alone in her room. Then hope comes from an unlikely place: an astronomer from the local observatory. He teaches her to look up at the stars, and to see a world far bigger and more beautiful than she ever imagined. And perhaps in that big, beautiful universe there’s someone waiting for her. If she can find the courage to open her heart. Pip never stopped dreaming, but now it’s time for her to live – and maybe even to fall in love. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Making Amends: Fast Fashion and the Global South Come join us at Liverpool Cathedral for a thought-provoking event discussing the impact of fast fashion on the Global South. Learn about the environmental and social consequences of our clothing choices, and explore ways we can make a positive change. This workshop will be facilitated by Emma Summerscale. Emma is an artist and designer whose work explores the emotional bonds we form with clothing and how these connections can inspire more sustainable choices. Rooted in the Japanese philosophies of wabi-sabi and kintsugi —which celebrate imperfection and visible repair—her practice embraces damage as a site of beauty and meaning. Through traditional techniques like boro and sashiko , Emma reveals the hidden stories embedded in cherished garments. As a designer, she specializes in upcycling and zero-waste pattern cutting, transforming discarded textiles into thoughtful, contemporary pieces that honour both memory and material. @emma_summerscales @studiothrift During this workshop Emma will facilitate meaningful presentations and conversations about the cost that fast fashion production and waste has on the Global South. In the second part of the workshop, Emma will teach you visible mending techniques that will allow you to repair your own garments! So bring along with you a beloved but damaged item of clothing and learn how to repair and enhance it creatively. Due to the nature of the activities involved this is a 1 2+ event and those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Don't miss this opportunity to educate yourself, learn new mending skills, and be part of the change! Information Source: Liverpool Cathedral | eventbrite

Chris McCabe reads live for the Liverpool launch of his new book Hedonism. He will be joined by publisher Jane Commane from Nine Arches Press, one of the UK’s leading independent poetry publishers. The event gives a chance to hear McCabe and Commane in conversation, exploring the creative process of editing and sharing insights into how a book is made. Hedonism presents a carnival of characters including Bez from Happy Mondays, Jorge Louis Borges and a medieval pilgrim on a journey to buy a PlayStation, in McCabe’s sixth and most daring collection. Part-written in Scouse dialect and invented languages, Hedonism offsets the comic with the elegiac in a haunting and polyphonic work exploring the intersection of grief, place, memory and imagination. About Chris McCabe: Chris McCabe’s work spans artforms and genres including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama and visual art. His work has been shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and the Republic of Consciousness Prize. His most recent poetry collection, The Triumph of Cancer is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation and he is the editor of several anthologies including Poems from the Edge of Extinction: An Anthology of Poetry in Endangered Languages and The New Concrete: Visual Poetry in the 21st Century (with Victoria Bean). His novels are Dedalus and Mud. He is working on an epic series of psychogeographical prose books documenting the lost poets buried in London’s Victorian cemeteries, the latest of which is Buried Garden which was chosen as a White Review Book of the Year in 2022. The Science and Society lecture series returns for 2025, with Professor Perdita Barran, delivering her lecture; Weighing Molecules to Diagnose Disease, from Heel Prick to Skin Swab. Every year more than 30 million babies worldwide are screened for inborn metabolic disorders directly after birth with a heel prick assay that takes a tiny amount of blood to be analysed with a mass spectrometer. By analysing sebum with mass spectrometry, a new method to detect Parkinson’s disease has been determined. Found in endogenous compounds obtained from skin swabs, it can be determined if an individual has Parkinson’s with more than 95% accuracy. The unique research program was initiated by Joy Milne, a retired nurse from Perth who noticed a change in her husband's body odour 11 years before his clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. Joy noticed the same distinctive odour was associated with other sufferers and hence linked it to onset of the disease. Based on Joy's observation, with simple non-invasive sampling of skin from the upper back, Professor Perdita Barran and her team have developed a diagnostic platform that is able to classify PD from sebum samples. This talk will discuss our work in using mass spectrometry to analyse intact biomolecules, our methodological approach for biomarker discovery, recent findings and give a perspective on how non-invasive sampling and mass spectrometry could play a major role for prevention and effective treatment of disease. Professor Barran holds a Chair of Mass Spectrometry in the Department of Chemistry and is the Director of the Michael Barber Centre for Collaborative Mass Spectrometry and a member of Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, The University of Manchester, UK. She is the deputy chair of the Infrastructure and Capital Advisory Group for the Medical Research Council, UK. Her research interests include: Biological mass spectrometry; Instrument and technique development; Protein structure and interactions; Dynamic and Disordered Systems; Parkinson’s disease Diagnostics; HDX-MS; Proteomics; and Molecular modeling. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and this year was awarded the RSC Tilden Prize. In 2019 she was the recipient of the RSC Theophilus Redwood, Researcher of the Year 2020 from the University of Manchester and the ACS Measurement Science Lectureship 2021. In 2020 she initiated the COVID-19 Mass Spectrometry Coalition and was appointed as Chief Advisor to the UK Government on Mass Spectrometry as part of their pandemic response. Perdita has had the privilege to mentor 35 graduate students through the successful completion of their PhD’s. as well as 16 postdoctoral fellows. Perdita has authored over 200 publications in peer reviewed journals which have been cited over 4000 times, by people other than her. In 2021 Perdita founded the company Sebomix Ltd. to exploit sebum as a diagnostic biofluid with a focus on Parkinson’s Disease. And Fletch doesn’t shy away from his Neighbours connection with some fun chat and music speaking to his other life as a soap Doctor. The support artist on the tour is brilliant Aussie singer/songwriter Riley Catherall. Riley supported Fletch on his sellout 2024 tour and was so admired by audiences he was the obvious choice to invite for an encore performance. A night with Fletch and his band is a guaranteed fun night out! IS ALAN FLETCHER A BETTER MUSICIAN THAN DR KARL! Here's what they say. Overall Alan Fletcher delivered a show that surprised in the best possible way. He had a fantastic vocal quality throughout as well as some solid guitar playing, but what elevated the evening for me was the balance he struck between thoughtfulness and fun and the strength of his connection with the crowd. It’s safe to say he’s going to appeal to music fans way beyond just those who know him from ‘Neighbours’ Entertainment-focus.com – Laura Cooney Had the pleasure of meeting Fletch in Worthing this week. A joyful evening of songs old and new. Highly recommended - Andy Dobson What a great night at The Steam and Whistle!! Thank you so much! You were all amazing and so lovely to see you again!! - Emiliana, Hannah and Jason Saw you in Southampton last night and you definitely have a better voice and more talent than Dr Karl !! Fabulous evening! - Kim Roberts LISTEN TO ALAN : https://open.spotify.com/artist/7cFm5js7bzn23T8tKkJG5G?si=iY9d3NT4SkO19EYVj5NJBA BE QUICK AND DON’T MISS THIS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR AND MEET A TV ICON!
