Who is it for? Board and staff members of non-profit organizations that serve the Southern Gulf Islands and are considering a legacy giving program, an endowment fund, or setting up a foundation. Why now? We are about to experience a huge shift of wealth and assets in the Gulf Islands as our aging population seeks to define their legacy in relation to their life as part of our island communities. At the same time, our global, national, provincial and local economies are in a state of transformation. The organizations that have been serving our communities are at risk if we cannot establish some meaningful approaches to sustainable revenue. Even where the organization may be run entirely by volunteers, no organization functions without costs. And all organization function effectively when they have resources (including staff) they can count on for the long-term. Learning Outcomes: 1. Understanding of legacy giving 2. Skills in developing an effective legacy giving campaign 3. Knowledge and skills in communicating about legacy giving 4. How to build positive collaboration with other organizations for maximum impact Participants will have time during the session to work on their own legacy giving plans with the support and advice of Aimee and Alison as well as engage in facilitated explorations of community-wide collaboration in building an island culture that supports lasting legacies. With legacy giving expert Aimee Lindenberger and non-profit expert (and Pender resident) Alison Brewin , workshop particpants will have a chance to explore how to make the ask, communicate your message, leverage collaboration, and navigate the key elements of a great legacy giving program. There will also be a guest appearance from Elisabeth Geller to share some information about Endowment Funds and Community Foundations. 9-10:30 am A presentation and Q&A: The What and Whys of Legacy Giving Including why it is important for Southern Gulf Island organizations, how it works, how it can impact organizations and their financial stability. and what might it mean for the Southern Gulf Islands.
