WHAT IS KIRTAN? Kirtan is the sacred practice of singing mantras, which comes from the Indian tradition of bhakti yoga - the yoga of love and devotion. Singing these mantras can really help us to open up our hearts and enter deep states of bliss and transcendence, helping to shift any emotional or energetic blocks that we may be carrying. Everything in this world - whether it be solid, liquid or gas - is simply vibrating energy. And we can use the resonant power of mantras as a form of sacred sound healing to realign our personal energy and connect to something larger than ourselves. By immersing ourselves in these sacred sound vibrations, great energetic shifts can occur. The Sanskrit language, which these mantras are sung in, is particularly powerful because each word is imbued with sacred healing vibrations that were channelled down by the Brahmins of India thousands of years ago. When we sing these mantras, we are connecting to the different energies of the universe, which are symbolised by the Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. By calling upon these archetypal figures - these different aspects of the divine - we help to awaken these powerful energies within ourselves. Singing is such a great way to release feel-good endorphins in the body and express the truth of who you really are. And when we focus upon the words of these sacred mantras, there is little room for your mind to wander, so you can very quickly drop down into your heartspace and enter an altered state of awareness. Contrary to what you might think, you don't have to be good at singing in order to do this practice. It is singing from the heart that's the most important thing - and when you find that deeper place of devotion and love within yourself, you may well be amazed at the beauty of the sounds that your voice carries. And so it is that you can heal yourself through the power of your own voice. The throat, they say, is a bridge between the mind and the heart. And when you sing these mantras, you can bring yourself back into alignment and experience a sense of peace and blissful oneness. Nick leads kirtan on his ukulele and many of the arrangements and melodies shared are his own. However, he also plays mantra melodies that are well-known to the kirtan community. He can often be found singing these sacred songs in his local park and it brings him much joy to share them with others. ABOUT THE EVENT This event will take place at the "Let It Be" Wellbeing Centre, 191-199 Park road - close to the big Tesco. The door to access the building is next to the William Hill betting shop - there is a phone box opposite the entrance, along with a sign above the door that says "EDUK". If you have any issues with finding the venue, then please contact Nick on 07584906623. SOME OTHER CONSIDERATIONS While singing, we tend to sit on the floor, so please bring whatever you need to be comfortable. There are yoga mats, cushions and meditation chairs available in the space. You are very welcome to bring along your instruments, such as drums or shakers, if you wish to join in with the music! Bringing some water can be a good idea too, as you might need it after singing for a while. There is a kitchen if you want to refill your water bottles, along with a tea-making station. Also, there is a toilet in the building, should you need to use one during the event. FURTHER CONTACT If you have any further questions about the event, then you can contact Nick via email: nick.carnelian@outlook.com To stay updated about these events, you can join the Kirtan With Nick WhatsApp group.
