Discover the joy of clay in our 4-week introductory course for total beginners! Learn wheel & throwing basics and create your own handmade pieces—no experience needed! You will learn: Throwing a basic cylinder: Intro to centering, coning, opening & pulling; how to remove pots from the wheel, drying, and storage. Cylinders continued: Focusing on any area of difficulty. Transforming the cylinder: Collaring in, pulling out, creating curves / bellies, flares and bowls. Finishing your pots: Trimming all pieces and attachments, clean-up (handles, decorative sculptural elements) All students are invited to an end-of-class glazing night, with an opportunity for community connection. There will be an instructor to teach finishing / glazing. Beginners will use brush-on stoneware glaze. Create your very own masterpiece! Cover a 5"x5" clear piece of glass with whatever you can design! Maybe you will create a van Gogh inspired piece, a self portrait, a lovely piece of scenery, or you can do a little bit of everything! Your pieces will also come with a wooden easel for display. This workshop will allow both those who are young and young at heart an opportunity to explore the medium of fused glass in a relatively low stress environment. This workshop touches lightly on the concept of fused glass and is a great way to explore a new medium. For safety reasons, long pants and closed toe shoes must be worn. After the workshop the glass will be kiln-fired. You will be able to pick up your finished artwork at the Canvas & Clay storefront. Skill Level: Beginner Ages: 7+ This is a family-friendly event. Make up to 5 glass cacti for your own 4” pot. No green thumb required! Additional cacti can be made for $5.00 each. This class will cover glass cutting techniques and the basics of fused glass. No experience is required; all tools, materials, and equipment will be supplied. For safety reasons, long pants and closed toe shoes must be worn. Please be aware that grinders will be used in this class, making noise that some participants find uncomfortable. Limited noise protection will be available, and participants are encouraged to bring their own protection for maximum comfort. After the workshop the glass will be kiln-fired and assembled with the pot, floral foam, and gravel. You will be able to pick up your finished artwork at the Canvas & Clay storefront, and you'll be able to rearrange the cacti to your heart's content! Now Magazine described her as "smart, sassy, provocative, and very funny." Martha has appeared multiple times at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, and the We Are Funny That Way Festival, to name a few. Martha describes herself as the "most famous Nicaraguan-Canadian LGBTQ+ stand-up comedian in the world," but despite being an act of such a unique nature, she’s hilariously relatable, universally funny and accessible. She tours from coast-to-coast as a headliner for Yuk-Yuks (Canada’s premiere chain of comedy clubs) and is also in high demand for corporate performances, conferences, and speaking engagements. She can frequently be heard on CBC's The Debaters and Laugh Out Loud. She is a regular panelist on the popular CBC show Because News. Martha also starred in two TV specials which were broadcast nationally: Comics! on CBC and Something About Martha on CTV and the Comedy Network. Martha was named 2018's Stand-up Comic of the Year by the Canadian Comedy Awards after being nominated seven years in a row, and her CD CHUNKY SALSA was included in a list of 2019's best comedy records.
