Now, she has written her debut novel based on a character who relocates from London to a struggling farm in Monmouthshire. Discover more about Pastures New as well the secrets from behind the scenes of Clare's 30 years in broadcasting… Pastures New Sometimes home is where you least expect it… Alex has perfected the art of dodging responsibility during her almost 40 years — until an unexpected letter turns her life upside down. With Huge Davies, Kate Martin, Tadiwa Mahlunge & hosted by Ryan Mold! ‌‌Headlining the show is the brilliant musical comic Huge Davies ! Huge debuted his first show ‘The Carpark’ at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019. A complete sell-out, it received multiple five-star reviews and an Edinburgh Award Nomination for Best Newcomer. The show was featured as Time Out’s No.1 comedy show to see, had three runs at the Soho Theatre following excessive demand and filmed as a special by LA based company 800 Pound Gorilla Media. His second show ‘Whodunnit’ and third ‘Album 4 My Ancestors (dead)’ were also fully sold out, received multiple five star reviews and is currently on a national tour. Huge appears on television frequently, including his own Channel 4 sitcom ‘ The Artists’ which he created, wrote and starred in . Other television appearances include 8 Out Out 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4), Roast Battle (Comedy Central), Jools Holland at the Albert Hall (Sky Arts), Hypothetical (Dave), Jonathan Ross’ Comedy Club (ITV1), Live at the Comedy Store (Comedy Central), Harry Hill’s Clubnite (Channel 4), Comedians Giving Lectures (Dave) Comedy All Stars Supershow (ABC) & The Stand Up Sketch Show (ITV2). He is a regular guest on the BBC Radio 4’s The Now Show and has appeared on The Off Menu Podcast . Huge performs all over the UK and internationally, supporting Phil Wang and Joe Lycett on their national tours. He also co-hosts podcast Slime Country with Ed Night and Sunil Patel . Opening the show is Kate Martin ! At 6ft 1, with the longest wingspan in comedy (*probably), Kate’s a naturally engaging, energetic performer with effortlessly tight gags to match. Her unique background in mental health, going from double school drop out to Dr (not the useful kind...), and bravely embracing being the only northerner in her family have given her a fresh take on the world. This distinctive voice fuels her high energy storytelling, whip-smart punchlines and razor-sharp observations of life's quirks through queer eyes. Kate Martin is ‘brilliantly funny & energetic’ (Angela Barnes) and her ‘confident delivery and slick material’ (Chortle) have quickly established her as one of the most exciting acts on the circuit. Kate regularly performs and MCs at many of the best comedy clubs and corporate gigs all over the UK. Kate has also done tour support for Zoe Lyons and Esther Manito and was a finalist of the Funny Women Stage Awards 2022 and runner-up in the finals of the WDCF New Comedian of the Year competition 2021 . With Tadiwa Mahlunge ! Billed as “one of the country's top new comedy acts” by The York Press, Tadiwa has performed at, among others, the Latitude, Greenman, and Greenwich Comedy Festivals, and regularly performs at the UK’s top comedy clubs. Tadiwa has provided tour support for Dylan Moran , Ed Byrne, Mark Watson, Kyle Kinane, Craig Conant, Christina P, Steven Ho, Tom Houghton, Kiri Pritchard-McLean, Jessica Fostekew, and TV warm up for Desiree Burch’s Amazon Prime special. Hosted by Ryan Mold ! Please note, that while we do our best to ensure that we deliver the published bill, line-ups can be subject to change at short notice. An Evening with Lyse Doucet - The Finest Hotel in Kabul | The Holroyd Community Theatre

Sep 22, 2025 (UTC+1)
West Thorney
Arts Literary Arts
Join us for an evening with Lyse Doucet, the BBC's Chief International Correspondent, as she talks about her new book The Finest Hotel in Kabul, a peoples history of Afghanistan. When the Inter-Continental Hotel opened in Kabul in 1969, it reflected the hopes of the country: a glistening white edifice that embodied Afghanistan's dreams of becoming an affluent, modern power. Five decades later, and the Inter-Continental is a dilapidated, shrapnel-damaged shell. It has endured civil wars, terrorist attacks, the US occupation, and the rise, fall and rise of the Taliban. But its decaying grandeur still hints at ordinary Afghans' hopes of stability and prosperity. Lyse Doucet, the BBC's Chief International Correspondent, has been staying at the Inter-Continental since 1988. She has spent decades meeting its staff and guests, and listening to their stories. And now, she uses their experiences to offer an evocative history of modern Afghanistan. It is the story of Hazrat, the octogenarian receptionist who for five decades has been witnessing diplomats and journalists, mujahideen and US soldiers, passing through the hotel's doors. It is the story of Abida, the first female chef to work in the Inter-Continental's famous kitchen after the fall of the Taliban in 2001. And it is the story of Sadeq, the 24-year-old front-desk worker who personifies the ambitions of a new generation of Afghans. The result is a remarkably vivid account of how ordinary Afghans have experienced half a century of disorder. It captures the soul of Afghanistan from within the walls of the Kabul Inter-Continental. We look forward to welcoming Lyse Doucet to Oswestry to celebrate the publication of The Finest Hotel in Kabul. It promises to be a fascinating event. Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing / meet and greet Tickets: £12 without book (admits one, £10 redeemable against a signed copy of The Finest Hotel in Kabul) or £24 (admits one, includes signed copy of The Finest Hotel in Kabul) Venue: The Holroyd Community Theatre is accessed off the Gledrid junction of the A5 north of Oswestry and is sign posted off Station Road (left turn before railway crossing). Jen Brister is Reactive - or so she's been told. Apparently you don't have to respond to every little thing around you. Finding herself in a constant state of exacerbation at the state of the world and people in general, Brister has been told she needs to chill the hell out. Can Jen find her zen? It seems unlikely to be honest… Jen is a critically acclaimed stand-up comedian and writer, as seen on BBC's Live at the Apollo, Frankie Boyle's New World Order, QI and Mock The Week. Following a sold out 2022 tour, Jen is back on the road with her highly anticipated new show. "Furiously Funny” The Guardian “Her energy is explosive. An Evening with Ben Youngs - My Life in Rugby | The Holroyd Community Theatre

Sep 23, 2025 (UTC+1)

Sports & Fitness Rugby
Join us for an evening with England's most capped rugby player of all time, Leicester Tigers' legendary scrum half Ben Youngs, as he talks about his career and life in rugby. In his unique, touching and honest memoir, rugby union legend Ben Youngs bares it all for the first time. Ben Youngs has had a dream career. He was born into rugby royalty and has achieved incredible success with both his family club, Leicester Tigers, and the English men's national team, for whom he is the most capped player of all time. His is an on-field legacy that any rugby player would envy. But there’s more to his story than meets the eye. In this deeply intimate memoir, the English rugby legend reveals how his remarkable record on the pitch masks what was, at times, a turbulent life off it. There have been highs: the 2019 World Cup final; a record-equaling eighteen-match unbeaten streak under Eddie Jones; finding friendship, brotherhood and a home at Leicester Tigers. But there have also been lows: losing two family members to terminal illnesses within a year; withdrawing from the Lions tour in 2017; falling out of love with rugby. In Beyond the Line , the five-time Premiership champion and member of the 2013 winning Lions test tour shares his full story with the public. With remarkable candour, wit and warmth, he writes of how his relationship with rugby proved pivotal to his healing process and vividly recounts the raucous nights and spontaneous adventures that only those within the inner circle typically get to witness. Inspirational and open, his story reveals not just the pressures of competition, but also the camaraderie and wild experiences that come with a life in rugby. We're thrilled to be hosting this event with rugby legend Ben Youngs to celebrate the publication of Beyond the Line. Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to see and meet him! Event Format: Ben Youngs 'in conversation' live on stage followed by audience Q&A and book signing / photo opportunity Tickets: £23 (Admits One and includes a signed copy of Beyond the Line) Venue: The Holroyd Community Theatre is accessed off the Gledrid junction of the A5 north of Oswestry and is sign posted off Station Road (left turn before railway crossing). Midhurst
Conferences
I am holding one of my regular ‘In Conversation’ events to give residents in and around Midhurst the chance to come along, to hear from me as their Parliamentary representative and to have an independent local journalist to put me on the spot. There will be the opportunity for the audience to ask questions too. Too many people feel remote from the important work that goes on in Parliament. As a former businessman myself, I recognise that headline party politics may be a turn off for many, but it is still Parliament that has to make important decisions on so many issues that the country faces. Respected local journalist, Gary Shipton, Editor of the West Sussex County Times, will interview me and then chair questions from the audience. Gary is a member of the industry-wide Editors' Code committee which sets journalistic standards. Alongside Gary's journalistic career, he is a Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex, an unpaid role in which he helps to celebrate the county and those who make a real difference in it. Due to security considerations, the location will be provided via email first thing on the day of the event, only registered attendees will be admitted and Photo ID may be required for entry. Tutor: Alistair Duncan What is Nature Connection? We can experience the natural world in so many ways. We can learn to identify the creatures and plants that we encounter, we can become familiar with their habits and ways. Or, sometimes, nature will stop us in our tracks with a moment of sublime wonder. But is it possible to go beyond these and know a deeper nature connection? An experience of more subtle awareness and relationship with the natural world. This workshop will introduce you to delightful practices that will heighten and enrich your experience of your place in the natural world. You’ll gain a deeper sensitivity and awareness of the presence of everything around you. And a greater feeling of connection to all that is happening around you. The day is a great compliment to the other workshops offered by the Trust which focus more on the identification and habits of the plants and creatures of our Sussex landscape. It’s also a rare opportunity to spend a day in the enchanting Hoe Wood that is not normally accessible to the public. You will: · learn a number of simple practices that will deepen your felt sense of connection and relationship with the natural world · spend guided time on your own learning to pay attention to the richness in everything around you · take time for reflection and discussion of the experiences · learn some background behind the practices and how to apply them in your life · possibly discover the beginnings of a different perspective on the human place in the natural world Venue: Woods Mill, Henfield, West Sussex BN5 9SD What to bring: Packed lunch, suitable clothing for weather, but ideally nothing too rustle-y to move around in. Lighter shoes better than big boots for moving quietly in nature Other information: Camp fire in the woods, hot drinks and biscuits / fruit available. Free parking. Public toilets can be found in the car park. Public transport: Compass Bus 100 Burgess Hill-Pulborough stops outside Woods Mill Monday – Saturday. No Sunday Service. Visit http://www.compass-travel.co.uk for timetable. Accessibility: Some walking in woods and meadows – uneven ground. Approx 2km This course is suitable for 16yrs+. Under 18's need to be accompanied by a paying adult. If our standard priced tickets are simply out of reach at the moment, you can opt for our open concession ticket. This is available to all with no questions asked. Cancellation and refunds can be made up to 30 days before the scheduled event. Cultural Experiences
Join us for an evening with bestselling food writer Dianna Henry as she talks about her new book Around the Table, featuring essays on places, people and food, handpicked from over two decades of her much-loved cookbooks. For Diana Henry's many fans, her evocative writing about places, people and food brings just as much pleasure as her delicious recipes. From the bustling Turkish groceries of the Edgware Road to the kitchen table of a cottage in rural France, a trattoria tucked away in the suburbs of Rome to the chilly Vermont countryside famed for its maple syrup, Diana Henry has followed her tastebuds around the world. In this collection, Diana's writing brings ingredients to life on the page. Tuck into salty and sweet, buttery and inky purple and black olives. Blood-red threads of saffron that turn whole platters of food into gold, bleeding yolk-yellow streaks over creamy chicken and milky white yogurt. Mouth-puckeringly citrusy, easy to peel and almost seedless Valencia oranges. The simple pleasure of a warming slice of toast. This vivid and nourishing collection of essays on the joys of good food is an utter delight for the senses. Foodies - this is the event for you! Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing /meet and greet Tickets: £12 without book (admits one, redeemable against a signed copy of Around the Table) or £22 (admits one, includes signed copy of Around the Table) Venue: The Holroyd Community Theatre is accessed off the Gledrid junction of the A5 north of Oswestry and is sign posted off Station Road (left turn before railway crossing).
