Join the public reception for the "Speech(less): In Defiance of War" art exhibition by Pomidor Art Team, a duo known for exploring censorship of anti-war activities in Russia. This solo exhibition, open throughout October and possibly beyond, is the team's first in the United States. The exhibition is located at Pennant Place in Gainesville, FL, specifically at 928 Northwest 21st Avenue. The event will take place on Sunday, October 22, 2023, from 4-6pm. Attendees can enjoy snacks and drinks while viewing the thought-provoking artwork.
The exhibition, divided into three parts, delves into the artists' reflections on silence, fearlessness, and intimidation in the face of war and oppressive regimes. The first part, "Speech(less)," focuses on the loss of freedom of expression and the impact of silence. Hand-sewn flags with quotes from various sources, including news stories, serve as powerful visual representations. The second part, "Fearless," pays tribute to individuals who bravely spoke out against the war and the regime, only to be persecuted and imprisoned. The final part, "Headless," addresses intimidation and propaganda, using shirts without head cutouts to symbolize the suppression of critical thinking. The artists aimed to create a new type of flag that highlights peace, anti-war movements, decolonization, and justice, placing the individual's voice above the nation's.
Pomidor Art Team, consisting of Polina Egorushkina and Maria Sarkisiants, left Russia in 2022 and are using this exhibition as an opportunity to speak out against the unlawful war and oppressive regime they witnessed. The replica flags displayed at Pennant Place ensure that their message reaches a wider audience. This exhibition serves as a homage to those who dared to defy and stand up against the injustices of war. Don't miss this chance to engage with powerful art that challenges the status quo. Admission is free, and tickets are not required.
