The Language of Nature - Creative Writing & Nature Connection Workshop | Haddo House (National Trust for Scotland)
Family Events
The Language of Nature
is an outdoors* writing and nature-connection workshop facilitated by author, writer and ecotherapist, Jane Cormack. We work and play with sensory awareness and mindful presence alongside writing and creativity to help people foster a deeper, and more personal relationship with the natural world.
Every environment we spend time in has an influence on our bodies, our energy, and our mental and emotional state, and therefore has an influence on what we create. In regaining our connection with nature, we remember
our
nature, and feel our way with words, back to belonging and the creative muse.
OUR VENUE
Haddo House & Country Park is a National Trust property in Aberdeenshire. Nature and I have developed a beautiful relationship here throughout my lifetime so, I’m delighted to be hosting this morning workshop at one of my favourite locations.
The country park is filled with ancient trees, flowers, birds and special ‘nooks and crannies’ - a bountiful and beautiful location to connect deeply with nature and the elements to infuse into our creativity.
In these surroundings, we’ll work with sensory awareness and the magic of the ecosystem to write and to foster a deeper, and more personal relationship with the natural world through creative tools.
In this morning workshop, we’ll explore and develop:
The art of noticing and sensing our environment: the weather, plants, geology, trees, seasons, colours, scents, textures, and sounds
Connection to the world around us through drawing and writing
Mindful presence in nature through meditation and movement awareness
Joyful, deep, and playful reflective and creative writing exercises
Group sharing in a safe and encouraging atmosphere
Who are
The Language of Nature
workshops for?
Workshops are for adults 18+ who would like to deepen their connection with nature and their creativity.
This workshop is suitable for seasoned writers and artists who want to explore how noticing and connecting with nature can enrich their creative practice, and for people with no previous writing experience who wish to explore new creative possibilities.
JOIN US IF…
You’re longing for space to relax in nature
You have a desire to connect with other word and nature lovers
You want to give time to your writing practice
You need some rehydration to refresh your creativity with the energy of nature
You want to feel more grounded and connected to your body and the natural world
You want to feel a deeper sense of ecological belonging
You wish to feel connected and awake, excited about creative ideas and with new golden threads to weave into your projects
You’re simply curious, want to try something new and creative and to be outdoors
What to Expect
You’ll learn to write pieces filled with sensory descriptions that come alive on the page and leave with a notebook filled with creative sparks of writing for further development.
You’ll gain personal reflections and insights, and a deeper, embodied awareness of your relationship with nature.
Expect words to spill, new connections and relationships to be made with people, land, and creature, soul nourishment, enhanced wellbeing, and creative hydration.
We’ll meet at The Peatyards building on the Haddo estate - a beautiful, glass fronted, light-filled space with a terrace, where we’ll open the workshop. We’ll then spend the majority of our time outdoors,* and gather back in the indoors space for a final exercise and to close our workshop.
On completion of the workshop, you might like to spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the gardens and estate, continuing your writing solo if you feel inspired, enjoying a picnic lunch or lunch/drinks from the choice of two cafes - The Courtyard Cafe or Mrs Smith's cafe. There are multiple outdoor picnic tables to eat outside.
*The weather
- in the case of heavy rain or inclement weather conditions, we’ll go outdoors for shorter spells and work with our writing indoors. You’ll be encouraged to ‘work’ with the elements at play on the day.
