Experience the pleasure and satisfaction of using traditional hand tools to carve your very own spatula from a log recently harvested from our own woodland. The word 'spatula' first appeared in the English language in the 1520's, but their use goes back many hundreds of years and probably pre-dates the bronze age! This is a great way to unwind, connect with nature and explore your more creative side. The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space depending on the weather, and a wood burner will keep us toasty warm on the coldest of days. As with all our courses we can arrange a private booking for an individual or small group on an alternative date, and can tailor the course to accommodate children from 9yrs and up. Please just get in touch. What you need to know This course is suitable for anyone 18years+ with an interest in learning a little about the thrills of working with greenwood, no previous wood-crafting skills necessary. Young people age 12 – 17 are welcome to attend but must be accompanied by an adult who is also a paying participant - please get in touch if you have any questions. Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. Basic refreshments will be provided on the day, and you can make use of the Applestore café. Information Source: Paul Williams Woodcraft | eventbrite

Humans have been crafting bowls for thousands of years, usually choosing freshly harvested wood, as it is much easier to carve than dry wood. There is something quite special about crafting a useful item from local raw materials, using nothing but hand tools and a little time. This course is designed to be a friendly introduction to carving greenwood bowls and is suitable for beginners, including those keen to carry on using these skills at home. You will carve your bowl from a length of recently harvested wood, usually alder or sycamore, and your bowl will be suitable for use in the kitchen, storing smaller items or simply as a decorative piece. For those interested in having a go back home we can spend time discussing suitable woods to use, tool options and sharpening, and a little advice on work stations. This is a great way to unwind, connect with nature and explore your more creative side. The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. This course will take place outside making use of our outdoor shelter if needed, and we can make use of our indoor workshop should the weather not cooperate! You will be taught the safe use of tools, and how to create a safe work station, but please be aware that working with any edge tools presents an element of risk. What you need to know This course is suitable for anyone 16 years+ with an interest in learning a little about the thrills of working with greenwood, no previous wood-crafting skills necessary. Young people age 14 – 16 are welcome to attend but must be accompanied by an adult who is also a paying participant - please get in touch if you have any questions. Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. Please provide your own lunch, and you can make use of the Applestore café for take out. Please note that you will not have time for a sit down lunch at the café. What's this course all about? On this fabulous day in the woods you will learn how to use traditional hand tools to craft your very own rustic bench. You will learn how to split a log into four or more 'billets' before carving each of your four legs. Most of the carving is done using a shavehorse & drawknife, perhaps the most important tools in the green woodworkers arsenal, and I would say one of the most satisfying activities you will every do! You will then learn how to secure your legs to your bench top using mortice and tenon joints secured with oak wedges. We make use of freshly harvested ash for the legs, and whatever suitable slabs are available locally for the bench top - such as larch, scots pine, cedar & Norway spruce. My workshop is situated in Ghyll wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We will aim to work outside in the woods, but can make use of our indoor space if the weather dictates, and a wood-burner will keep us warm on colder days. What you need to know Suitable for beginners or those with a little more experience. Minimum age 18 years with no upper age limit, however please ask if you wish to discuss a younger person taking part. A reasonable level of basic fitness is suitable, and you will use both sitting and standing work-stations during the day, but please do be aware this is very much a physical and full day. Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. Snacks and refreshments will be provided on the day, and you can get take out drinks from the café. Please bring your own lunch - the Apple Store Café is just a few metres away and makes excellent food, it can get quite busy, but you can order your lunch to bring back to the workshop if you wish (you will not have time for a sit in lunch at the café). Please note that toilets are situated up by the café. Information Source: Paul Williams Woodcraft | eventbrite

These pots have traditionally been carved across eastern Europe and Scandinavia for hundreds of years, and are called Krympburkar in Sweden. They can be used for storing all manner of things from kitchen utensils to craft items, pens etc. You will hollow out a freshly harvested greenwood log, then cut a base from a dry piece of wood, and insert the base into a groove carved on the inside of the pot. As the log shrinks, it will form a tight seal around the dry base, giving you a lovely pot ready for use. You will also have the opportunity to craft a lid for you pot, and to carve a simple design. And you may have a chance to carve a second pot, depending on your progress. This is a great way to unwind, connect with nature and explore your more creative side. The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. This course will be based outside with an option to use our indoor space (complete with log burner)should the weather dictate. What's this course all about On this very special two day course you have the opportunity to hand craft your own medieval inspired folding chair. The design is based on a unique example that can be seen in Dumfries museum, and may be indeed be the only one ever made, and is certainly a very rare survivor. Quite roughly made from what appears to be oak, with a raw hide strung seat, I would think it was not made by a skilled carpenter, but perhaps a woodsman, farmer or other such person, and it's this unique aspect that give it a rustic fascination and mystery. Each chair made will itself be unique, but its heritage will be clear. The folding frame, back rails, seat rails, pivot rail, will be made from locally sourced hard wood poles with hand carved round tenons secured into individual round mortice holes using oak dowels. And rather than using rawhide for the strung seat, you will use natural jute cordage. My workshop is situated in Ghyll wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We will aim to work outside in the woods, but can make use of our indoor space if the weather dictates, and a wood-burner will keep us warm on colder days.
