Cultural Experiences
The Woolf Institute’s Randeree Religious Diversity in End of Life Care training aims to empower clinical and non-clinical staff to enhance the quality and impact of the care they provide to patients and relatives. This one-day training session will include a combination of presentations, video case studies, discussions, and opportunities to ask questions on end of life care in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Participants will also receive a copy of our Religious Diversity in End of Life Care Handbook which the training draws upon and can be used for future learning. By undertaking training, practitioners working in end of life care can become more knowledgeable and confident offering care, empathy and compassion to Muslim, Jewish, and Christian patients who are approaching the end of life. This is achieved by staff better understanding the religious, social and cultural practices that surround death and dying. The Woolf Institute is an interfaith research institute, based in Cambridge, which studies and aims to improve relations between Muslims, Jews, and Christians. Through research, education, and public engagement we seek to better understand these faiths, build trust between people of different faiths, and increase understanding and cooperation in society between people of faith and those with other beliefs and worldviews. You can read more about our work here . Unfortunately, there is no free parking available at the Woolf Institute. You can see the various paid parking options on our website here . The fee for the session covers the cost of food and tea/coffee which will be provided to attendees across the day. If you have any questions about the training, please contact lt598@cam.ac.uk . Democracy's Double Helix Where does our modern democracy come from? It is a composite of two very different things: a medieval tradition of political participation, pluralistic but highly elitist; and the notion of individual equality, emerging during the early modern period. Democracy's Double Helix does not simply project and trace our modern democracy back into history, assuming that it was bound to come about. It looks instead at the political practices and attitudes prevailing before its emergence. From this perspective, it becomes clear that there was little to predict the coming of democracy. It also becomes clear that the two historical trajectories that formed it obey very different logics and always remain in tension. Accessibility Information This event will be quite informal with space for attendees to mingle with one another in a relaxed setting. There will be a small number of seats made available for anyone who needs one. Please get in touch if you have particular needs that you would like us to consider in advance. Access is via our main entrance on Trinity Street, by street level and there are not steps or ledges. There are 2 single-person bathrooms, including one large enough to fit a wheelchair with the door closed. Information Source: Cambridge University Press Bookshop | eventbrite

Car ownership is something many Canadians are fortunate to have but many have never been taught the basics of car care. With The Car Lady, our dealership partners to host an informative and comfortable session for a range of car owners. For those who know a little about cars and those who would consider themselves to know nothing about cars. We will help de-mystify what is under the hood of your car and help you not only take better care of your current car to help assist with resale value, but help you stay prepared for when an event on the side of the road does occur. No need to feel lost when your car makes strange noises or lights pop up on the dashboard. Let us help you feel more empowered moving forward. Plus, enjoy some pizza and drinks while getting a fun and interactive lesson on cars! Don't know if you will get value from this? Here is what our customers have said: May Reid: Just attended the "Know your Car" workshop with Christine. Fun presenter who really knows her stuff! I appreciated learning more about maintenance and safety features of my Toyota. The car cleaning tips sheet has lots of good ideas. It was interesting to see the underside of a car on a hoist. I was also glad to hear about the willingness of the staff at this dealership (now owned by the 401 Group of Companies) to answer questions and go over features of my vehicle at any time. Thanks also for the refreshments Highly recommend this presentation. Joanne Beattie: I attended the "Car Lady Canada" Event and I highly recommend it! Christine knows her stuff and shares lots of tips and tricks! Young or old, everyone should go and check out this event when it is offered again! A nice perk to customers and guests, even if it's not a Toyota. Information Source: The 401 Group of Companies | eventbrite

Abstract: Max Weber defined the modern state as having a monopoly on legitimate violence. Not in the United States. The American regime organized and defended popular violence right from the start. The American Constitution –driven by both historical necessity and political theory-- institutionalized an armed citizenry. The Constitution, interacting with slave codes in the south, institutionalized the violence that was already endemic in colonial America and projected it into the future. We argue that as the state slowly developed its own capacity for legitimate violence it operated in a unique dialectic with the citizen violence that the state itself had organized. The development of the American state’s capacity continues to the present day. The Trump administration vastly expands the federal government’s law enforcement apparatus and projects it onto the reluctant cities in the American homeland – unsettling established ideas (and legal boundaries) but following a logic that was present from the start. We offer a framework for understanding how the state interacts (and patterns) private violence across four broad categories: Delegation, exemption, enforcement, and repression; all are complicated and driven forward by American federalism. Speaker Bio: Desmond King is the author of 13 books, 9 coedited books and numerous articles and chapters. Amongst other findings, King's research has demonstrated the influence of New Right ideology in the Reagan and Thatcher eras ( The New Right: Politics, Markets and Citizenship Dorsey 1987), the evolution of modern conservatism in the United States (coed. The Changing Character of the American Right Vols 1 & II , PalgraveMacmillan, 2025), the significance of segregation in the US federal government ( Separate and Unequal: African Americans and the US Federal Government, OUP 1995/2007 2n ed), the national bases of American identity ( The Liberty of Strangers, OUP 2007), the malign influence of eugenics on North American social policy (with Randell Hansen, Sterilized by the State Cambridge UP 2013), the expanson of executive power in the American state (with Stephen Skowronek and John Dearborn, The Deep State versus the Unitary Executive: Phantoms of a Beleaguered Republic, OUP 2021), the of institutions in comparative labour market policy ( Actively Seeking Work: The Politics of Workfare in hte USA and Britain Chicago 1995), and the politics of the Federal Reserve quantitative easing programmes (with Larry Jacobs, Fed Power: How Finance Wins OUP 2021), how a dichotomy between protect and repair policy alliances now drives the politics of civil rights (with Rogers M Smith, America's New Racial Battle Lines: Protect versus Repair , Chicago 2024). polity. King's op-eds have appeared variously in Le Monde Diplomatique, the New York Times and the Financial Times . Cultural Experiences
Black Roots: Grounded and Growing Toward Collective Futures is a conference at the Harvard Graduate School of Design presented by the Black Student Union (formerly African American Student Union) and Africa GSD. This event investigates the Black praxes of making space, taking space, and creating “tools for living” through three interconnected themes: Black theologies, Black ecologies, and Black geographies. It explores the complex relationships between belief systems, environments, and lands that shape Black communities across the diaspora. Design serves as both terrain and a tool to explore lineage, land, and lore as intertwined forces shaping our communities. Through keynote panels, workshops, performances, and creative exchanges, the conference critically examines histories of migration, displacement, and resilience in the context of ongoing political and environmental crises. Through dialogue and creative expression, Black Roots foregrounds how Black spatial practices shape, and are shaped by, resistance, resilience, and regeneration. A comprehensive conference schedule and details about our speakers will be available soon at blackindesign.org . This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Meal and reception tickets are available for purchase here to registered guests. Information Source: Harvard University Graduate School of Design | eventbrite

Family Events
Our kids are facing a whole new level of complex as they grow up in a turbulent digital world. Bullying, screen time, influencers, deep fakes, disinformation, lessening attention span, the rise of AI and VR … these are just some of the issues our children are facing online and, as parents, we can’t afford to ignore them. But they are issues we have the power to tackle. We need to remember, if we’re not talking to our children about the world, then someone else is. The last thing we want to do is scare parents about the impact technology is having on their children or pile on any guilt. There’s plenty of that out there already. But we don’t want to shy away from the problems either. Our live event, Left to Their Own Devices? will equip you with practical skills and knowledge so you can stay ahead of the curve and help your children navigate the online world safely and to their advantage. We’ll explore ... What our children might be exposed to online, who they might be speaking to and how they behave The teenage brain and why managing the online world is harder for them than for us  Practical ways to keep your family safe online Ways to keep up with a fast-changing industry The impact social media is having on mental health How we as parents can be role models What to expect We know that many parents are concerned about the digital world and the impact it is having on their children and that’s why we’ve created this event. We want to address some of those concerns and give mums, dads and carers the tools they need to help their children navigate the online world. At Care for the Family, we have a dedicated team of people working hard to make sure all our events are high quality, professional and the best they can be. This event is well-researched, well-rehearsed and well-presented. And it will be well worth your time. We’ve packed it with practical tools and up-to-date research on the issues that a lot of families are facing. And our speakers certainly know their stuff – Katharine has also written a book about it! We can’t promise that these 2 and a half hours will answer every question you have or address every concern, but we can promise to give you practical ideas to try and encouragement that you are not alone on your parenting journey. We honestly believe that this one evening can make a difference to your family and we really hope you’ll be able to join us. Information Source: Care for the Family | eventbrite
