Dayan Naxi Ancient Music Performance | Old Town of Lijiang
Jan 1–Dec 31, 2024 (UTC+8)
Lijiang
Music is Medicine, it can bring life or death.
Located at the Himalayan foothills of Yunnan, the ancient cultural centre of Lijiang County is mainly inhabited by the ethnic minority called Naxi. Due to its remote geographical location, it has miraculously peserved the ancient Chinese Dongjing music.
Dongjing music was used by the scholars in ancient of China as a kind of”Liyue”(rites and music) activity in Taoist rituals. It has the dual function of harmonizing human relationships. Confucianism and nourishing the body and he soul as in Taoism, Since the music was chiefly used to perform the Transcendent Scripture of the Great Grotto of Wenchang (Da-dong Xianjing ), it was called Dongjing (grotto scripture) music. This music later became popular among the cultural elites during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
During the Jiajing period in the Ming Dynasty(1522-1566AD),DongJing music was introduced into Yunnan through the Naxi. With the spread of western knowledge in China in the latter part of the Qing Dynasty, this music almost vanished from Central China, but has survived in the isolation of Lijiang County.
Nakhi music and its powerful ideas were discovered by Mr.Xuan Ke,He Yian, and YangZengLie. Together they rebuild the Nakhi Orchestra in order to research,to train young students.
Dayan Nakhi Ancient Music Association's effort in preserving and promoting Dongjing music has much attention and interests among scholars in China and overseas. The Ensemble enjoys the prestige of having”three old rarities”: ancient musical compositions, authentic instruments and elderly musicians. The works to be featured in this concert can be traced back as far as the Tang Dynasty and consist of accompanied songs and instrumental pieces.

1Maple Wood Transforms into Butterfly
According to legend, the butterfly was born from the core of maple wood. The butterfly flew to the edge of the pond and fertilized with a bubble, laying 13 eggs, which were hatched by the Jiyu bird into the 12 zodiac animals and a beautiful Miao girl. Human beings were thus born, and the butterfly became the incarnation of the Miao butterfly mother and god.
02Migration
The Miao people are an ancient ethnic group that once lived in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. After failing in the ancient tribal war, in order to survive, during the long years of migration, the Miao people's footprints were all over the mountains and rivers of China. The Miao people attach great importance to sacrifice, worship their ancestors, and respect the spirits of heaven and earth. Whenever they offer sacrifices, under the leadership of the drum head, that is, the head of the priest, they worship the ancestors and pray for good weather and good harvests! Prosperity of people and livestock! Happiness and peace! Bronze drum dance is a kind of dance with rhythmic drumming and dance movements and formation changes by the drummer. The dance posture is rough and flexible, the dance steps are vigorous and powerful, and the emotions are full, which fully reflects the bold and simple national character of the Miao people! Legend has it that the souls of the Miao ancestors live in the drums, and beating the bronze drums can let the ancestors hear the prayers of the sacrifice.
03 Ancient customs
Love is an eternal topic for mankind. The Miao people advocate freedom of marriage and encourage young men to boldly pursue the girls they like. This is why there are traditional social festivals during the slack season, such as the Climbing Festival in April of the lunar calendar and the Malang Festival in June. Men and women travel around and play. If they really love each other, even if the two families are not "equally matched", the Miao youth will secretly kiss and complete their own marriage. In terms of advocating free love, the romantic Miao people are many years ahead of other ethnic groups!
04 Miao Village Splendor
There are more than 130 kinds of Miao costumes. It can be said that no other ethnic group in the world regards women's costumes as important and sacred as the Miao. They wear totems on their heads and embroider wordless history books on their clothes. The beautiful Miao girls are dressed in their best clothes and walk towards you. The silver ornaments on their heads shine brightly with their brisk dance steps, and together with the colorful costumes, they interpret the beauty of the Miao mountains and rivers!
The large-scale song and dance evening "Beautiful Xijiang" also arranged an interactive session for friends on the scene, allowing the audience to go on stage and participate in games with the Miao girls. The winner will receive a beautiful gift.

BETWEEN DECLARATIONS AND DREAMS: ART OF SOUTHEAST ASIA SINCE THE 19TH CENTURY | National Gallery Singapore
Jan 1–Dec 31, 2024 (UTC+8)
Singapore
Housed in the former Supreme Court building, the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery features over 300 artworks that trace shared artistic impulses across Southeast Asia. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the exhibition navigates Southeast Asia’s art history as an ongoing encounter with the new, as artists across the region negotiate the meaning of art and seek to reinvent vernacular expressions and aesthetics. Presented largely chronologically and interspersed with key turning points in artistic sensibilities, the exhibition also identifies how art is inextricably linked to the region’s turbulent social and political history.
The exhibition owes its title to Chairil Anwar, one of Indonesia’s most cherished poets. In his 1948 poem Krawang-Bekasi, Chairil Anwar lamented the massacre of villagers by Dutch colonial troops in West Java, giving vent to the desire for national independence at the time. This line can also be said of the experience of many artists in the region, caught between manifesto and dream, personal and political.
The curatorial narrative explores four themed locations in roughly chronological order, each of which critically examines common artistic impulses in the region during each period: Authority and Anxiety, Imagining the Nation and the Self, Performing the Nation, and Redefining Art.

Liyuan Guild Hall-Chuan Opera Changing Face (taiguli store) | Chengdu
Jan 1–Dec 31, 2024 (UTC+8)
Chengdu
During the Qing Dynasty, a new word appeared in the history of opera: Liyuan Guild Hall. Opera has always been nicknamed "Liyuan", and opera actors are also called "children of Liyuan". In the early days, the Liyuan Guild Hall was the trade union organization and spiritual home of opera artists. With the development of the times, opera has become a treasure of our country's traditional art and one of the important forms of folk culture. There are many interesting types of dramas, and the performance forms include singing and dancing, speaking and singing, literature and martial arts, integrating "speech, song, dance and combat in movements", making it unique in the history of world drama.
Liyuan Guild Hall - Intangible Cultural Heritage Sichuan Opera Face-Changing Performance is now performed in 2 venues in Chengdu. The Chunxili Taikoo Li store is adjacent to the city center of the core business circle, and the Wenshu Yuan store is located in Wenshu Fang, the central leisure and tourist area of Chengdu. The guild hall originated after the "Wenchuan Earthquake" in 2008. It voluntarily organized "performances to benefit the people" to entertain moviegoers and became the spiritual pillar of countless theater fans during the special period. They insisted on "living for themselves and singing for the audience."
Today's Liyuan Guild Hall is not only a national intangible cultural heritage "Sichuan Opera practice base", but also cooperates with the Chengdu Charity Federation to establish an intangible cultural heritage Sichuan Opera public welfare fund to contribute to the inheritance of Sichuan Opera culture. The first "Intangible Cultural Heritage Sichuan Opera Parent-Child Special" attracted many parent-child families to come to Sichuan Opera and understand Sichuan Opera.
Liyuan Guild Hall specializes in Sichuan Opera and promotes the reputation of "Sichuan Opera to watch the world". Here you can go into the front and backstage, get close contact with the artists, and watch colorful Sichuan Opera performances: face-changing, spitting fire, rolling lanterns, Kung Fu tea art , puppet show, hand shadow show, etc., feel the charm of traditional culture.
The Liyuan Guild Hall serves as a hall for meeting friends, and brings together domestic famous opera actors and actresses to stay here. While presenting authentic Sichuan opera culture to tourists visiting Sichuan, it also creates special performances of opera classics from various regions and brings together folk stunt performances.
The Liyuan Guild Hall has high aspirations. You can watch a play, drink tea and taste local snacks here; if you are a "theater fan", you can play a famous role here and experience "one minute on stage, ten years of work off stage". If you come here for "hobby", welcome to join the "Liyuan Children", and we will inherit and carry forward the Chinese opera culture together.
Liyuan Guild Hall welcomes you!
