Once again, here are all the details for my classes: Level My class is open to ALL levels! I usually calibrate my classes to an intermediate pace (or what I’m seeing in the room.) I break everything down to a science, so beginners can feel comfortable and advance dancers can pick up nuances and textures. Teaching Style I’m not just going to show you the choreo; I’m going to “build” it for you. In other words, for each movement you’ll see how the technique comes to life body part by body part, making it very easy to process. I’ll do the choreo for you several times, but often I will also watch, so I can actually provide you with feedback and help refine the nuances. Community I am ALL about community, so I really try to get to know my students and for you all to get to know each other. Not everyone is a crazy extrovert like me, so I like to find different ways during class for us to get introduced while still staying focused on the learning process. This is meant to be an inclusive environment where you can feel comfortable pushing yourself out of your comfort zone around people that will support you. Benefit Fundraiser for PRS Building Fund: First-Ever Display of 40 Original Artworks by J.A. Knapp forThe Secret Teachings of All Ages The original artworks painted in the mid-1920s by illustrator John Augustus Knapp(1853-1938)for The Secret Teachings of All Ages, are among the most glorious esoteric and metaphysical paintings ever created: visions of Atlantis, the Oracle of Delphi, the Emerald Tablet, the Philosopher’s Stone, the Hand of Mysteries and more. Even high-quality reproductions can’t convey the mystery and beauty of the original watercolor-and-tempera artworks, which remain in pristine condition with stunningly fresh colors. For the first time since they were painted by Knapp nearly one hundred years ago, as a One-Night Only Display to raise funds for the End of the Year Giving Campaign for the PRS Building Fund: all 40 original artworks in the PRS collection for The Secret Teachings of All Ages will be exhibited in the Library together! Our enormous thanks to Virginia Warner and the Virginia S. Warner Foundationfor providing a generous grant to have these rare artworks conserved and framed by Digital Fusion. For fans and admirers of esoteric artwork and symbolism, and The Secret Teachings of All Ages, this is (literally) a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these breathtaking paintings in person. As a wonderful historical note: Knapp worked in the 1920s painting poster art and silent film title cards for the Thomas Ince Film Co. in what is now Culver City. It was discovered during recent preparation for framing that one of the artworks was painted on the reverse of a silent film title card – and that work has been framed so that both the front art and the reverse card are visible, for the first time since it was created in the mid-1920s a century ago! In addition to the display of the paintings, the Benefit will feature short presentations on Knapp’s artwork by artist, writer, exhibit curator, art critic and former PRS Board Member Michael Pearce, artist and Surrealist Study Group founder Amanda Maciel Antunes (aka dama)and writer, teacher and PRS Contributing Artist Stephen Reedy, as well as a violin performance in the Library by noted musician Savannah Jo Lack. Knapp’s breathtaking illustrations for The Secret Teachings – gorgeous visions of Atlantean temples, Delphic oracles and Mithraic gods, swirling with color and arcane symbols – are among the most admired works in esoteric art in the 20th century. Similarly, his designs for the Knapp-Hall Tarot have become classics in the field for their medieval-inspired simplicity and beauty. A native of Kentucky, born before the Civil War broke out, Knapp was well into his 60s when he met the much-younger Manly Hall and began working together on Knapp’s journal The All-Seeing Eye and other books. Michael Pearce is a dynamic writer, exhibit curator, and art critic. He is an active and enthusiastic participant in the conversation about 21st century art and its roots, especially contemporary imaginative realism. He has published dozens of articles about art and artists, and wrote a book about art and neuroscience titled Art in the Age of Emergence. He is a champion of art that emerges from popular culture and shapes the spirit of the age. His book Kitsch, Propaganda and the American Avant-garde - the story of the invention of the American avant-garde - will be published later this year. He is Professor of Art at California Lutheran University. Amanda Maciel Antunes (aka dama) is a Brazilian artist based in Los Angeles. Her autodidactic and transdisciplinary practice merges language and durational performance to create multi-media and site specific projects. She works in collaboration with public libraries, nature and communal spaces, reflecting on the selective nature of memory, inherent language and anthropological references as points of departure. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and had poetry and short stories published in various journals. Most recent select exhibitions and performances took place at Galeria Vermelho, Galeria Chão, Wignall Museum, Track16 Gallery, 18th Street Arts Center, Oregon Contemporary, Brand Art Library, ArtShareLA, and Hansell Gallery. Stephen Reedy is a longtime student and sometimes teacher at PRS. He strives to bring a relatable and energetic approach to exploring the basics of Symbolism and comparative Philosophy. His other life is in the film and advertising industries, where he has worked with companies like Masterclass, Blumhouse and Warner Brothers. Savannah Jo Lack began her professional career as an orchestral violinist but soon abandoned that course to play in bands, tour Australia and make her own music. She was awarded a Golden Fiddle and a Churchill Fellowship for her work in Australia before moving to the US in 2007. After graduating with a masters in film composition from USC, Savannah was invited to be a part of the prestigious Sundance composer’s program in Summer 2022. She worked on the score for the movie Filip, directed by Michal Kwiecinski, (to be released Feb 2023) and composed the music for Tiger Ji’s tragi-comedy, Death and Ramen (2023 release) staring Bobby Lee and Matt Jones. Savannah composed music for the Emmy nominated documentary, Betrayal - the life and art of Rudolf Bauer and for the play, Bauer, by Lauren Gunderson which premiered off-Broadway in 2015. Savannah has worked as a soloist on feature and short film scores, (Killing Ground, Exitus Roma, Empyrean) . She has composed two albums with award-winning producer, Robot Koch. Tracks from these albums have been placed in major advertising campaigns, (Sony Bravia) and tv shows (Night Shift). Her latest record with Robot, ‘Otherwhere’ was recorded with the Deutsche Kammerorchester on the Neue Meister label. Masterclass with Guillermo G. Peydró: Film on Art Join us for an exciting event with renowned filmmaker Guillermo G. Peydró where he will share his insights on the intersection of film and art. Get ready to be inspired and learn! Date: Thursday 5th December 2024 Time: 13:00-14:00 Location: Geoffrey Manton Building, Manchester Metropolitan University About this masterclass Since the 1940s, a whole series of filmmakers have consciously explored the possibilities of filming the arts, using diverse and often conflicting strategies. In my book Film on Art. From the Dramatisation of Painting to the Essay Film (“El cine sobre arte. De la dramatization de la pintura al cine-ensayo”, Shangrila, 2019), I propose seven options, each with pioneering experiments, theoretical debates, and subsequent detours. The seventh of these, the last in chronological order, is an essay film on art and brings together all the other experiments in a meta-reflexive form that uses the expressive tools of the literary essay. My work as a filmmaker falls within the last option, particularly my trilogy of political reactivation of Spanish works of art, which includes a film about painting (The Guernica Variations, 2012), another about architecture (City of Work, 2015) and a third piece on literature (The Tableau of Wonders, 2021). In this masterclass, I will briefly examine the characteristics of each of the trends. I will offer a brief description of the devices I use in my films, focusing on my essay-film on Cervantes in times of pandemics and fake news (The Tableau of Wonders, 2021). Join translator Ilze Duarte at Books Inc. Pruneyard for a celebration of the Book of Affects by Brazilian writer Marilia Arnaud. Ilze will be in conversation with author Kathleen Wheaton. About the Book: Critically acclaimed in her native Brazil, Marília Arnaud now reaches a wider, international readership with this English edition of O Livro dos Afetos . In this short story collection, Arnaud uncovers the moving, complex, and often mystifying workings of the human heart as her characters grapple with desire, jealousy, betrayal, loss, and longing in nine stories ranging from the tender to the violent. The exploration of these varied themes and affects expands and intensifies through Arnaud’s use of alternating points of view: male and female, adult and child. Arnaud’s assured voice breathes life into these intriguing characters with masterful descriptions of their physical landscapes and inner lives, an energetic narrative pace, and polished, evocative, lyrical language. At once intimate and engaging, intense and warm, Arnaud’s writing echoes some of Clarice Lispector’s themes—love, loss, gender, the complexity of human relationships—and yet sets itself apart with its unique narrative style and diction. Since the 1970s, Michael Doret has brought his unique words-as-images to a wide range of projects, from magazine covers to record covers, logos to typefaces, and much more. Letterform Archive holds a major part Michael’s archive, including rough-to-refined sketches, meticulous mechanicals and color studies, and other original artwork. Join Michael at the Archive (or online via Zoom at 6:00pm PT) in conversation with Associate Curator Stephen Coles, and get a peek into the secrets of drawing letters by hand. Book signing to follow. Limited to 15 attendees. A graduate of the Cooper Union, Michael opened his design studio first in New York City and later in Hollywood. An eight-time winner of the New York Art Directors Club Silver Award, Michael is a specialist in logos and letterforms. His unique typographic vision blends elements of lettering, illustration and graphic design. The inspirations for his work come primarily from his early years growing up near the bright lights, signage, and brilliant colors of Brooklyn’s Coney Island, and later from such diverse sources as matchbook covers, theater marquees, enamel signs, and early-to-mid-20th-century packaging and ephemera. In addition to designing many memorable covers for Time, Doret has designed album covers—from Rock and Roll Over for KISS to his Grammy Award–nominated design for the Squirrel Nut Zippers—and has created many famous works, including the logo for the New York Knicks, the Summer Harvest stamps for the USPS, the title treatment for Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, and the classic poster for Simon and Garfunkel’s concert in Central Park. In the early 2000s, Doret branched out into the realm of font design by opening his digital foundry Alphabet Soup Type Founders. To date, he has released ten unique font designs. Stephen “Stewf” Coles, Associate Curator & Editorial Director (he/him), joined the staff after serving on our Board of Directors since its inception. For over 20 years, he has been active in the type community, initially as a creative director at FontShop, and later as an independent consultant, connecting font makers with font users. Stephen wrote the book The Anatomy of Type and co-founded the influential websites Typographica and Fonts In Use. With his background in design and journalism, combined with an obsession for type history, Stephen is responsible for the online face and voice of the Archive, and shares the collection through the blog and other editorial projects.
