The goal is to expand the spectrum of conversation beyond the traditional confines of space and time. It creates opportunities for individuals to both present and participate in an intimate atmosphere that encourages collaboration. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. It is where conversations for the next-big-thing are happening. History of Security BSides BSides was born in 2009 when a number of quality speakers were rejected from a mainstream conference, not due to lack of quality but rather lack of space and time. Our mission is to provide people with options by removing common conference barriers and by providing more options for speakers, topics, and events. 2009: Launched in the United States. 2010: BSides breaks into the global space with the first European event. 2011: More than 30 events worldwide in the US, Europe, India, Hong Kong, & Australia. 2019: First BSides Vancouver Island event held at the University of Victoria 2023: Second BSides Vancouver Island event held at the Vic Theatre 2024: Third BSides Vancouver Island event held at the Victoria Conference Center Thousands of people have attended and written about their experience at BSides events. Read more at: https://www.securitybsides.org/Media. While every BSides event is unique, here are some things that don’t change: Community organized, volunteer-driven, and corporate-funded Provide a forum for expanding the spectrum of conversation Focused on giving a voice to the “next big thing” Stay up to date! Nocturnal Owl Monitoring - Visit the Banding Station Rocky Point Bird Observatory has banded and collected data on more than 13,000 Northern Saw-whet Owls, giving us insight into population cycles and the health of individuals and allowing us to collaborate with a continental network of researchers through data sharing. Though we have learned that Southern Vancouver Island is on an important migratory route for these birds, we know very little about their wintering and breeding locations. RPBO is exploring new technologies and partnerships that will allow us to learn more and to protect their important habitats. The owl banding season begins September 15th and ends October 31st. Please monitor the weather on the day of your visit. Adverse weather (high winds and/or rain) may require us to close our operations at short notice as it's not safe for the birds to be in the nets during such conditions. We will try to notify those signed up of any closures or cancellations, but please be aware that this may occur last minute, and we won't be able to notify you in time. IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND please cancel your reservation through Eventbrite. We maintain a waiting list for visitors and appreciate the opportunity to invite others to take your unused reservation. Dates for visitor opportunities will be released on August 15, September 1 and September 15, so if you are unable to find a date that works, please check back on those dates. Please email visits@rpbo.org for further information and support. PLEASE NOTE - Please register for only one time slot. We allow our visitors to remain on site longer than the stated time if necessary. Please do not register for more than one timeslot so that we can welcome as many people as possible. Cultural Experiences
This workshop introduces participants to noticing, identifying, and understanding the amazing lichens that surround us in our urban and suburban ecosystems. Build your knowledge around how to identify lichens, what a lichen is, common lichen species in Lekwungen Territory, what a lichen can tell us about the environment, lichen ecology, and discuss the ethics of collecting fallen lichens for various uses. Will take place both indoors and outdoors with the possibility of microscope work. Instructor Bio Natasha (Tasha) Lavdovsky is a neurodivergent artist/lichenologist settler, who grew up in traditional Tsawout First Nations unceded territory. Tasha's expertise with lichens has arisen from many years of self-taught study and from collaborative interdisciplinary lab and field-based art projects with professional lichenologists. Recently, her fieldwork surveying a new population of at-risk Old-growth Specklebelly lichen near the Fairy Creek watershed contributed to the publication of a Canadian Field-Naturalist journal article that critiques BC's lack of protection for biodiversity. In 2009 Tasha obtained a BA in studio art and art history from Princeton University where she also studied geology, oceanography and environmental studies. After becoming disillusioned with urban society, Tasha returned to the West Coast in 2011 to reconnect with the land and develop sustainable art practices. Since then, Tasha has been deepening her understanding of anti-colonial theory, ethics and environmental stewardship, which informs her work in video, performance, photography, installation, textiles and sculpture. Tasha is the recipient of numerous art awards from various institutions, including the Canada Council of the Arts, and the BC Arts council. Currently living in Pacheedaht territory, Tasha is completing her MFA in Studio Art remotely through Concordia University. How to Register for this Event This workshop is happening in person only. Please dress appropriately for all types of weather, the workshop may be outside or in our heated strawbale building. Only current members in good standing are eligible to use the free ticket option as a part of their member benefits package. There are a limited number of Pay What You Can tickets available for folks who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC), and people who are facing significant financial barriers to their involvement in our programming. The Compost Education Centre is continually in the process of examining the ways in which our program accessibility can be improved for all members of our community. This ticket gesture is by no means a fulsome examination of the systems of oppression that exist for people inside and outside of our community. We welcome your ideas and feedback. You must pre-register for this event. You can purchase a ticket through Eventbrite. You can also register for the event by calling our office at 250 386 9676 or via email by contacting office@compost.bc.ca Customers can request a refund within 30 days of ticket purchase. Hailing from Canada, Germany and Russia, the quartet’s members formed the group in Frankfurt am Main and have since gone on to win prizes at major national and international music competitions, including second prize at both the Mozart International Competition in Salzburg and the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, the Prize of the German Music Competition as well as three additional special prizes, and first prize and the special prize for the best interpretation of a piece by Karol Szymanowski at the inaugural International Karol Szymanowski Competition in Katowice, Poland. The Eliot Quartett has established itself as a cornerstone of the music scene in its hometown of Frankfurt, Germany. In addition to appearances at the Alte Oper, the Polytechnische Gesellschaft concert series and the Schumann Gesellschaft, the Eliot Quartett is a regular guest at the Holzhausenschlösschen in Frankfurt and founded its own festival ‘Eliots am Main’ in 2022. The Eliot Quartett’s concert schedule includes performances at renowned festivals and concerts series throughout Europe. It has performed at the Bachfest Leipzig, the Kasseler Musiktagen, the Mozartfest Würzburg, the Rheingau Musik Festival, the Shostakovich Tage, the Festival Musica Sur and Delta Chamber Music Festival in Spain, the Styriarte in Graz, the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Schubertiade. The four musicians began their chamber music instruction with Prof. Hubert Buchberger and went on to study with Prof. Tim Vogler at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main and with Prof. Günter Pichler at the Instituto Internacional de Música de Camera at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. The Eliot Quartett has received valuable musical guidance from Valentin Erben, Oliver Wille, Martin Beaver, and the Mandelring Quartet and enjoys a close working relationship with the esteemed pianist Alfred Brendel and the Belcea Quartet. The Eliot Quartett is named after the American poet T. S. Eliot whose famous work “Four Quartets” was inspired by the innovative late Quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven. Eliot, like Beethoven, attempted to establish a connection between past, present and future by breaking away from the accepted classical forms of the time. The Eliot Quartett has released several recordings on GENUIN classics. Information Source: Wentworth Villa | eventbrite

The Lee Boys grew up in the church where their father was a pastor and a steel player himself. “Sacred steel” is a type of music described as an inspired, unique form of Gospel music with a hard-driving, blues-based beat. The musical genre is rooted in Gospel, but infused with rhythm and blues, jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, country and ideas from other nations. When The Lee Boys bring their joyous spiritual sound to the stage, audiences instantly recognize that this is not “sitting and listening” music: dancing, shouting out, and having fun are considered essential parts of their tradition. Founder and bandleader Alvin Lee explains “The inspiration and feeling that comes along with our music is the reason that people feel good.” The Lee Boys have taken their modern expression of Sacred Steel on the road and have become a pre-eminent touring ensemble. These engaging artists work well in a variety of venues ranging from intimate club settings to performing arts centers to large festival stages. Their music attracts audiences from the jamband, folk, blues and Gospel worlds. Over the past 20 years, The Lee Boys have released four albums, packed prestigious venues, and spread their music and message beyond the church pews through residencies, recording studios and concerts across the world. The Lee Boys have performed for more than 750,000 music fans at festivals throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Their unique sound has attracted musical artists such as Allman Bros. Band, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Plant, Robert Randolph, Derek Trucks, Mavis Staples, Gov’t Mule, Del McCoury, Traveling McCourys, Victor Wooten, Blind Boys of Alabama, Black Crowes, John Legend, and The Roots – all of whom have performed with the Lee Boys and/or invited them to tour with them. The Lee Boys were recently recognized and honored by the State of Florida. They were Recipients of the Florida Folk Heritage Award in 2022 for “their contributions that led to a greater appreciation and recognition of the importance of traditional arts and artists in our state.” Visit their website: https://www.leeboys.com Doors open at 6:45 pm Information Source: Beacon Ridge Productions | eventbrite
