The Practical Archival Skills Training (PAST) programme offers students a unique opportunity to obtain the skills and knowledge needed to undertake academic research using original records at The National Archives (TNA). *Please note that this is a one-day workshop on site at The National Archives on 10 June 2025 * This Modern Legal Records workshop will trace the changes in the civil justice system in England and Wales within the modern period and explore the records created by the superior courts, and related bodies, in the administration of civil justice from circa 1840 to circa 1980. It will introduce you to the broad sweep of the records, including nooks and crannies which it is easy to overlook, and the records of civil justice in empire. At the end of the workshop, you will have increased awareness of the breadth of TNA’s civil justice holdings for the modern period, as well as improved confidence in your ability to find and use these collections. This event is aimed primarily at students undertaking postgraduate research, early career researchers, and other researchers who are new to using these records, but other researchers and archivists are also very welcome. This is a level three workshop within the PAST programme, and will be investigating complex and demanding archival collections, but you will be supported by expert staff throughout. Join us at the bookshop for a discussion of The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin About The Left Hand of Darkness: Genly Ai is an ethnologist observing the people of the planet Gethen, a world perpetually in winter. The people there are androgynous, normally neuter, but they can become male ot female at the peak of their sexual cycle. They seem to Genly Ai alien, unsophisticated and confusing. But he is drawn into the complex politics of the planet and, during a long, tortuous journey across the ice with a politician who has fallen from favour and has been outcast, he loses his professional detachment and reaches a painful understanding of the true nature of Gethenians and, in a moving and memorable sequence, even finds love… Information Source: Books on the Rise | eventbrite

10th June is the anniversary of the action for which John Lyons won his Victoria Cross. His citation states: On 10 June 1855 at Sebastopol, in the Crimean Peninsula, Private Lyons picked up a live shell which had fallen among the guard of the trenches, and threw it over the parapet, thus saving many lives. To mark the occasion, we are hosting an all-day event focussing on the Crimean War: the role of the 19th Regiment (forerunner of the Green Howards) played; the account of Margaret Kirwan who accompanied the regiment, one of the first-hand accounts by a woman of a ‘hot’ war, she found herself so near the action her skirt was nicked by stray bullets, and John Lyons in particular. The day will include a private tour of the collection, a glimpse into the museum stores, a handling session of contemporary material from the conflict and, to end the day, the chance for guests to hold and examine the Lyons Victoria Cross medal group. Medicine Buddha is widely revered as the “Great Physician Buddha,” known for his infinite spiritual power and noble presence. His compassion for all living beings is like that of a parent for their children, wishing only for their health, peace and true happiness. Grandmaster JinBodhi, the founder of Bodhi Meditation, has dedicated his life to realizing the 12 great vows of the Medicine Buddha. Medicine Buddha’s 12 Great Vows The 12 great vows of Medicine Buddha aim to fulfill the needs of people’s lives, with hope that all sentient beings’ wishes will be fulfilled – whether for health, wisdom, material desires, guidance in life, and more. The Medicine Buddha’s Divine Oracle allows us to connect with higher powers, communicate with the Medicine Buddha, and seek his divine guidance.
