Chiang Mai Sky Lantern Festival | San Sai
Nov 24–Nov 25, 2026 (UTC+7)
San Sai
Celebration
The sky lantern festival (Yi Peng or Yee Peng) is a traditional festival in northern Thailand, originating from the Lanna Kingdom over 700 years ago, where people express gratitude for the harvest at the end of the rainy season. Among these celebrations, the Chiang Mai Sky Lantern Festival stands out as particularly grand and spectacular, as this city is the historical center of Lanna culture. On the full moon of the twelfth month in the Thai lunar calendar each year, people craft colorful sky lanterns and gather to light them together. Thousands of lanterns carrying people's wishes for merit-making and dispelling misfortune soar into the night sky, creating a breathtaking sea of dreamy lights.
During the Chiang Mai Sky Lantern Festival, besides participating in lantern release activities at various venues, you can fully immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere. You may choose to stay longer to explore traditional music and dance performances, local art and cultural exhibitions, or witness sacred ceremonies presided over by monks at temples. You can also join the free Loy Krathong festival activities, which usually coincides with the sky lantern festival. Locals decorate floating baskets and release them into rivers and lakes to pray for good fortune.
The Chiang Mai sky lantern festival in 2026 will be held on November 24 and 25 at multiple venues (see admission ticket information for specific times). For example, the CAD cultural center venue - a highly popular traditional celebration site known for its grand scale, lively atmosphere, and hard-to-get tickets; the horizon countryside venue - enjoy festival activities in an idyllic setting, famous for its beautiful gardens and tranquil environment; the Maejo university venue - a traditional sky lantern festival site with a quiet, sacred atmosphere and strong Buddhist ambiance; the Lamphun khaomao golf venue - featuring traditional northern Thai performances and monk chanting, offering a comfortable and intimate atmosphere.
