Author Talk with 'Wyl Menmuir' Come join us for an exciting evening at Camborne Library to meet and chat with the talented Wyl Menmuir. Wyl Menmuir is a multi-award winning author based in Cornwall. His 2016 debut novel, The Many was longlisted for the Booker Award and was an Observer Best Fiction of the year pick. His second novel, Fox Fires was published in 2021 and his short fiction has been published by the BBC, Nightjar Press, Kneehigh Theatre and National Trust Books, and has appeared in Best British Short Stories. Wyl's first full-length non fiction book, The Draw of the Sea, won the Roger Deakin Award from the Society of Authors and a Holyer an Gof Award. His second non fiction book, The Heart of The Woods, was released in 2024. A former journalist, Wyl has written for Radio 4, The Guardian and The Observer. He is a course leader for Curtis Brown Creative, co-creator of the Cornish writing centre, The Writers’ Block and is a senior lecturer in creative writing at Falmouth University. Wyl now lives on Cornwall's north coast with his wife and two children. When he is not writing or teaching writing, Wyl enjoys messing around in boats. Safeguarding 1 Online - Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness Course All Coaches, Children's Officers and Designated Liaison Persons (DLP) must first complete the 3 hour Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness Course. This is an on line workshop which educates participants on the implementation of best practice in protecting the welfare of children involved in sport. The Sport Ireland Code has been adopted and implemented by governing bodies of sports, clubs, local sports partnerships and community/voluntary groups on an ongoing basis since 2000. It has been encouraging to see the common sense approach to the adoption of the code at grass roots level, which has resulted in protection for young people and leaders. If young people are to stay involved in sport throughout their adult life, they need to be equipped with the fundamentals to remain involved with sport and physical activity. Equally we need to ensure that their early experiences are positive and enjoyable, irrespective of their ability, gender, social class, race, etc. It is encouraging to see adults, both volunteers and professionals, contribute to these positive experiences by acting as role models in all dealings with young people. In particular the work of Children's Officers at club and national level is instrumental in implementing the Code. We need to build on this valuable work to ensure that all young people see sport and physical activity as an important and valuable aspect of their lives that they will sustain throughout their adulthood. Tutored by Vision Sports Ireland, this Vision Sports Awareness Training is designed to educate coaches, volunteers and teachers on Vision Impairment and how small adaptations to sport and physical activity sessions can make a huge difference to the experience of the participant with a vision impairment. Over the 1.5 hours, attendees will learn about the various types of Vision Impairment, basic techniques of sighted guide training and the importance of description and colour contrast when delivering a session. Examples will be presented of various Blind and Vision Impaired sports and adapted equipment available. Attendees will also be informed of the various programmes available through Vision Sports Ireland. Vision Sports Awareness Training has been endorsed by Sport Ireland Coaching.
