The BSPR’s Sixteenth Conference Creativity and Creation 4th – 6th September, 2025 Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford Keynote Speakers: Clare Carlisle (King's College London) Jessica Frazier (Oxford) Catherine Pickstock (Cambridge) Michael Puett (Harvard) The 2025 conference theme encompasses both human creativity and divine creation, across the full range of religious and philosophical traditions, theistic or otherwise. Presentations may focus on either human creativity or divine creation, or consider the relationship between the two. They may explore the metaphysics, ethics or phenomenology of creative acts (human or divine). We welcome philosophical reflection on the role of the arts in religious life and thought. We also want to consider the creative aspects of philosophical work itself. Conceptual and historical approaches are equally welcome, and attention to both practice and theory is warmly encouraged. Questions addressed by the conference may include, but are not limited to, the following: What is the relationship between human creativity and divine creation? To what extent is philosophical thinking a creative activity? How can we think philosophically about the role of the arts in religious life? What is the connection between creativity and desire / knowledge / freedom / flourishing? What account of agency underpins our conceptions of creation and creativity? How do alternative models of theism (e.g. pantheism, panentheism, polytheism, classical monotheism) conceptualise creation? Information Source: British Society for Philosophy of Religion | eventbrite

The history of medicine is always a bit uncomfortable. This tour walks you through the medical history of the city from medieval plagues, to the founding of the medical school, and the first trials of penicillin. Far from a straightforward linear progression, Oxford’s medical history is a complicated conversation about health equity, medical ethics, and continued clashes over the control of the body. Using the built environment, we examine health geographies, resistance to public health policies, and the tensions inherent in medical progress. This tour platforms diverse stories while discussing histories of empire, race, class, and gender, highlighting how these narratives have an enduring impact on our modern lives. All our tours are led by university researchers who have completed our official Uncomfortable Oxford training programme. Our guides combine expert knowledge and performance, ensuring each tour is a fun and educational experience. Tour recommended for ages 12 and older. Indignity 'There must be hope somewhere, between memory and imagination. Perhaps it takes the form of faith in the redeeming power of art.' When Lea Ypi discovers a photo of her grandmother, Leman, honeymooning in the Alps in 1941 posted by a stranger on social media, she is faced with unsettling questions. Growing up, she was told records of her grandmother's youth were destroyed in the early days of communism in Albania. But there Leman was with her husband, Asllan Ypi: glamorous newlyweds while World War II raged. What follows is a thrilling reimagining of the past, as we are transported to the vanished world of Ottoman aristocracy, the making of modern Greece and Albania, a global financial crisis, the horrors of war and the dawn of communism in the Balkans. While investigating the truth about her family, Ypi grapples with uncertainty. Who is the real Leman Ypi? What made her move to Tirana as a young woman and marry a socialist who sympathized with the Popular Front while his father led a collaborationist government? And why was she smiling in the winter of 1941? By turns epic and intimate, profound and gripping, Indignity explores what it means to survive in an age of extremes. It reveals the fragility of truth, both personal and political, and the cost of decisions made against the tide of history. Through secret police reports of communist spies, court depositions, and Ypi's memories of her grandmother, we move between present and past, archive and imagination, fact and fiction. Ultimately, she asks, what do we really know about the people closest to us? And with what moral authority do we judge the acts of previous generations? Lea Ypi Lea Ypi is Professor in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science and an Honorary Professor in Philosophy at the Australian National University. A native of Albania, she has degrees in Philosophy and in Literature from the University of Rome La Sapienza, a PhD from the European University Institute and was a Post-Doctoral Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford University. She is the author of Global Justice and Avant-Garde Political Agency, The Meaning of Partisanship (with Jonathan White), The Architectonic of Reason , and Free: Coming of Age at the End of History which has been translated into thirty-five languages. Her academic work has been recognised with the British Academy Prize for Excellence in Political Science and a Leverhulme Prize for Outstanding Research Achievement. She is a fellow of the British Academy, of Academia Europea and of the Albanian Academy of Sciences. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

This Is For Everyone The most influential inventor of the modern world, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is a different kind of visionary. Born in the same year as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, Berners-Lee famously shared his invention, the World Wide Web, for no commercial reward. Its widespread adoption changed everything – transforming humanity into the first digital species. Through the web, we live, work, dream and connect. In this intimate memoir, Berners-Lee tells the story of his iconic invention, exploring how it launched a new era of creativity and collaboration, while unleashing a commercial race that today imperils democracies and polarizes public debate. Filled with his characteristic optimism, technical insight and wry humour, this is a book about the power of technology – both to fuel our worst instincts and to profoundly shape our lives for the better. As the rapid development of artificial intelligence heralds a new era of innovation, Berners-Lee is the perfect guide to the crucial decisions ahead – and provides a gripping, in-the-room account of the rise of the online world. Peppered with rich anecdotes and amusing reflections, This is For Everyone is an essential read for understanding our times, and a bold manifesto for advancing humanity's future. Tim Berners-Lee Sir Tim Berners-Lee was born on 8 June 1955 and grew up in London. He studied physics at the University of Oxford before working at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva. While at CERN, he wrote a program for storing information including using random associations that he named ‘Enquire’. While never published, Enquire became Sir Tim’s conceptual basis for marrying hypertext with the internet to create a system for sharing and distributing information globally. He published this proposal in a paper titled ‘Information Management: A Proposal’ in 1989. This was the World Wide Web (WWW). Sir Tim has been a tireless advocate for shared standards, open web access for all and the empowerment of individuals on the web. He founded the World Web Consortium (W3C), the global web standards body, where he remains Emeritus Director. He is also the co-founder of the Open Data Institute and World Wide Web Foundation. As co-founder/CTO of Inrupt he has developed the Solid Protocol, pioneering open-source technology to provide data sovereignty for citizens, governments and companies. Sir Tim is an Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Oxford, and has been the recipient of several honorary degrees and awards, including the Seoul Peace Prize and the Turing Prize widely recognised as akin to the Nobel Prize for Computing. He was knighted in 2004 and later appointed to the Order of Merit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

Join Kimberly Ann Johnson for a one-day exploration into the foundational wisdom of the bones. Before mothering the bones, we must locate ourselves at the Bonehouse. Bones are the last of “us” to decompose. Bones are dense, and also porous. Bones are echo locators- master orienters. We can find ourselves in space through our bones. Being deeply located is true grounding. This one-day workshop is a grounded initiation into the architecture of the female pelvis - a space where instinct, memory, and power live. Drawing from the nervous system-informed roots of Jaguar work, and a precursor to Mothering the Bones , this day is a real time exploration of structural and relational support, and landing more fully in the felt sense of your body and on the body of the earth. Through body and relationship, we will explore what it means to inhabit the pelvis beyond anatomy - as the dwelling of ancestry, memory and knowing - a place where boundaries live and can be built, where repair is possible, and vitality lives. This is an opportunity to awaken instinct, track the presence of threat and safety, and cultivate greater capacity for pleasure. Whether you are returning to this work or encountering it for the first time, Lean and Land is a grounded initiation into your bones and their relationship with the world around you. Kimberly Ann Johnson is a Sexological Bodyworker, Somatic Experiencing practitioner, Structural Integration practitioner, birth doula, yoga teacher and single mom. Kimberly helps women heal trauma, awaken their power and feel at home in their bodies to start living life on their own terms. We're pleased to host this very special event in collaboration with the Bodleian Libraries “The supreme novelist of his generation” Sunday Times What We Can Know 2014: A great poem is read aloud and never heard again. For generations, people speculate about its message, but no copy has yet been found. 2119: The lowlands of the UK have been submerged by rising seas. Those who survive are haunted by the richness of the world that has been lost. Tom Metcalfe, an academic at the University of the South Downs, part of Britain’s remaining island archipelagos, pores over the archives of that distant era, captivated by the freedoms and possibilities of human life at its zenith. When he stumbles across a clue that may lead to the lost poem, a story is revealed of entangled loves and a crime that destroy his assumptions about people he thought he knew intimately well. What We Can Know is a masterpiece, a fictional tour de force that reclaims the present from our sense of looming catastrophe, and imagines a future world where all is not quite lost. Ian McEwan Ian McEwan is the critically acclaimed author of eighteen novels and two short story collections. His first published work, a collection of short stories, First Love, Last Rites, won the Somerset Maugham Award. His novels include The Child in Time , which won the 1987 Whitbread Novel of the Year Award; The Cement Garden; Enduring Love; Amsterdam, which won the 1998 Booker Prize; Atonement; Saturday; On Chesil Beach; Solar; Sweet Tooth; The Children Act; Nutshell; Machines Like Me ; and Lessons. Atonement, Enduring Love, The Children Act and On Chesil Beach have all been adapted for the big screen. Richard Ovenden Richard Ovenden is the Bodley’s Librarian and the Helen Hamlyn Director of the University Libraries. He also serves as Head of Gardens, Libraries and Museums (GLAM) at Oxford. All tickets include a copy of the book. Concession tickets are available with a valid student card. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite
