Everyone is welcome to join the discusion of our favorite scifi and fantasy reads. Whether you're a seasoned fan or just dipping your toes into the genre, this is the perfect place to explore new worlds with fellow readers. At our November gathering, the group voted on our next read! For our Friday, January 31 gathering from 7-8 pm, we’ll be discussing Jade City by Fonda Lee. Your Eventbrite RSVP is super helpful to our snack and beverage planning! About the book // FAMILY IS DUTY. MAGIC IS POWER. HONOR IS EVERYTHING. Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for—and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion. Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon’s bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation. When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone—even foreigners—wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones—and of Kekon itself. A modern classic and word-of-mouth sensation, Jade City is the World Fantasy Award-winning story of magic and kungfu, where four siblings battle rival clans for honor and power in an Asian-inspired fantasy metropolis. So... what's this book club like? // Scifi / Fantasy readers have been gathering bi-monthly for over a year now and it's been a blast! Some people finish the read, others dip in for as long as they have capacity for. All are welcome, valued, and celebrated. The group draws a crowd of about 15-20 people; enough to keep the perspectives diverse and fresh, but not too many that all voices aren't heard. We have a number of folks who've returned to us--and a number who are new. We discuss prepared prompts but we also go with the conversational flow. After a good discussion, the group votes on the next session's read. Feel free to pitch a book to the group, whether it's a new book you're itching to read it or it's a favorite! Booksweet is located in The Courtyard Shops, filled with AMAZING dining options. We will provide water and light refreshments (including nut-free and gluten-free options). Literati proudly welcomes Steve Inskeep, cohost of NPR's Morning Edition, in celebration of the paperback release of his bestselling book, Differ We Must. He'll be joined in conversation by Michigan Public's April Baer. The LSA Honors Program is delighted to act as a co-sponsor for this event ***All Tickets to this event include a paperback copy of Differ We Must. *** About The Book: A compelling and nuanced exploration of Abraham Lincoln’s political acumen, illuminating a great politician’s strategy in a country divided—and lessons for our own disorderly present In 1855, with the United States at odds over slavery, the lawyerAbraham Lincoln wrote a note to his best friend, the son of a Kentucky slaveowner. Lincoln rebuked his friend for failing to oppose slavery. But he added: “If for this you and I must differ, differ we must,” and said they would be friends forever. Throughout his life and political career, Lincoln often agreed to disagree. Democracy demanded it, since even an adversary had a vote. The man who went on to become America’s sixteenth president has assumed many roles in our historical consciousness, but most notable is that he was, unapologetically, a politician. And as Steve Inskeep argues, it was because he was willing to engage in politics—meeting with critics, sometimes working with them and other times outwitting them—that he was able to lead a social revolution. In Differ We Must, Inskeep illuminates Lincoln’s life through sixteen encounters, some well-known, some obscure, but all imbued with new significance here. Each interaction was with a person who differed from Lincoln, and in each someone wanted something from the other. While Lincoln didn’t always change his critics’ beliefs—many went to war against him—he did learn how to make his beliefs actionable. He told jokes, relied on sarcasm, and often made fun of himself—but behind the banter was a distinguished storyteller who carefully chose what to say and what to withhold. He knew his limitations and, as history came to prove, he knew how to prioritize. Many of his greatest acts came about through his engagement with people who disagreed with him—meaning that in these meetings, Lincoln became the Lincoln we know. As the host of NPR’s Morning Edition for almost two decades, Inskeep has mastered the art of bridging divides and building constructive debate in interviews; in Differ We Must, he brings his skills to bear on a prior master, forming a fresh and compelling narrative of Lincoln’s life. With rich detail and enlightening commentary, Inskeep expands our understanding of a politician who held strong to his moral compass while navigating between corrosive political factions, one who began his career in the minority party and not only won the majority but succeeded in uniting a nation. Steve Inskeepis a cohost of NPR’s Morning Edition, the most widely heard radio program in the United States, and of NPR’s Up First, one of the nation’s most popular podcasts. His reporting has taken him across the United States, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, Pakistan, and China. His search for the full story behind the news has led him to history; he is the author of Instant City, Jacksonland, and Imperfect Union. April Baer is the host of Michigan Public’s Stateside talk show. Information Source: Literati Bookstore | eventbrite

Literati proudly welcomes bestselling author Hanif Abdurraqib in celebration of the paperback release of his bestselling book, There's Always This Year. The LSA Honors Program is delighted to act as a co-sponsor for this event. All tickets include a paperback copy of the book. About The Book: Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, in the 1990s, Hanif Abdurraqib witnessed a golden era of basketball, one in which legends like LeBron James were forged and countless others weren’t. His lifelong love of the game leads Abdurraqib into a lyrical, historical, and emotionally rich exploration of what it means to make it, who we think deserves success, the tension between excellence and expectation, and the very notion of role models, all of which he expertly weaves together with intimate, personal storytelling. “Here is where I would like to tell you about the form on my father’s jump shot,” Abdurraqib writes. “The truth, though, is that I saw my father shoot a basketball only one time.” There’s Always This Year is a triumph, brimming with joy, pain, solidarity, comfort, outrage, and hope. No matter the subject of his keen focus—whether it’s basketball, or music, or performance—Hanif Abdurraqib’s exquisite writing is always poetry, always profound, and always a clarion call to radically reimagine how we think about our culture, our country, and ourselves. Your Eventbrite RSVP is super helpful to our snack and beverage planning! About the book // A lush tale of deadly court intrigue and a modern classic of fantasy by Locus award winner and Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award finalist Katherine Addison The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three half brothers in line for the throne are killed in an accident, he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving rightful heir. Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment. Surrounded by sycophants eager to curry favor with the naïve new emperor, and overwhelmed by the burdens of his new life, he can trust nobody. Amid the swirl of plots to depose him, offers of arranged marriages, and the specter of the unknown conspirators who lurk in the shadows, he must quickly adjust to life as the Goblin Emperor. All the while, he is alone, and trying to find even a single friend . . . and hoping for the possibility of romance, yet also vigilant against the unseen enemies that threaten him, lest he lose his throne–or his life. The Womens and Teens Self-Defense Program is a comprehensive approach to safety training that includes awareness, risk reduction, posture and verbal skills as well as physical skills. It is meant to provide OPTIONS in the critical moments in which your personal space has been violated. It also aims to prevent assault against females and build confidence in their ability to stay safe. By cultivating the defensive mindset and the desire to fight for life, this program helps empower the female student from the inside out. This dynamic program allows the student to learn skill sets with a hands-on approach. Skills are demonstrated and explained, practiced through repetition with and without padded targets and are reinforced with physical simulation practice. Simulation practice means students use skills they have learned against a padded attacker with full force. This helps them realize their physical power and also reinforces their need to verbalize initially and throughout the exercise. Students are not left alone in any of these exercises and are coached through each step which provides a supportive environment for all women including those that have survived assault. This is a 1-day course, with 6 hours of both classroom instruction and practical work on the mat. Class is scheduled from 10:00am-4:00pm. Please note that refunds ARE accepted until one week prior to the session. There are NO REFUNDS for any reason less than one week out of the program. Cancellations must be requested by 5:00pm one week prior to the session. TICKETS ARE ALSO NOT TRANSFERRABLE. Thank you for understanding our staffing and registration needs to run an effective program. Wellness forms and information on the class will come to your email via eventbrite prior to the start date. Please check your spam or trash folder as many times this email will go there. Please also let us know if you have any special needs ie: hearing assistance etc, so we can plan for your arrival. Information Source: Fighting Spirit Personal Safety, LLC | eventbrite
