The Seldom Scene Returns to Live At Hub City Vinyl | Live At Hub City Vinyl

Dec 30, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Baltimore
Arts
Theater
The Seldom Scene was established in 1971 in a basement in Bethesda, Maryland. The original line-up, our Founding Scene Fathers, was John Starling on guitar, Mike Auldridge on Dobro, Ben Eldridge on banjo, Tom Gray on double bass, and John Duffey on mandolin. Charlie Waller, a member of the Country Gentlemen, can be credited for the band's name... Expressing his doubt that this new band could succeed, Waller reportedly asked Duffey, What are you going to call yourselves, the seldom seen? The band performed weekly at the Red Fox Inn before getting a residency at the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, Virginia. The rest is history. The progressive bluegrass style played by the Seldom Scene had become increasingly popular during the 1970s. Their weekly shows included bluegrass versions of country music, rock, and pop. The band's popularity soon forced them to play more than once a week —but they continued to maintain their image as being seldom seen, and on several of their early album covers were photographed with the stage lights on only their feet, or with their backs to the camera. Though the Scene remained a non-touring band, they were prolific recorders, producing seven albums in their first five years of existence, including one live album (among the first live bluegrass albums). Since forming, the band has gone through numerous lineup changes. The last big shakeup happened in 1995, when Duffey and Eldridge, the two remaining original members, recruited dobro player Fred Travers, bassist Ronnie Simpkins, and guitarist Dudley Connell to join the band. Mandolinist Lou Reid returned the following year and in 2017 Ron Stewart joined as the new banjo player. The current band has been together the longest in Seldom Scene history, and for good reason... With an inventive take on bluegrass, the Seldom Scene has displayed both their original material and their interpretations of songs from limitless genres. Long live the Seldom Scene. Exploring the Monoscene - Advanced Elective Class | Riverside Third Space

Baltimore
Arts
Comedy
About this Class: Over 8 weeks, you will explore one of improv's most popular and foundational performance forms, the Monoscene. The monoscene is an entire longform improv show set in one location, in real time. No jumps, no edits, no cuts, no escape from the choices you make. Many consider the monoscene to be one of improv's most intimidating formats, but with practice it can also be one of the most rewarding. This class is designed for moderate to experienced improvisers looking to dive deep into patient play focusing on character development and relationships. You’ll build the skills to sustain tension, craft memorable characters, and learn to let things breathe. Each class session will run from 7:00pm-9:00pm ET, with optional time available after class to discuss and debrief. Class will run for 8 weeks from January 9th through February 27th, and we'll have a student showcase on March 4th. Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Improv Level 2 or equivalent training at another theatre (reach out if you have questions). This class is in-person, but Highwire Improv also offers online classes - check out our page for other offerings! About your instructor: David Lustig (he/him) has been consistently performing improv for over 20 years, and performing good improv for about 10. He has been described as the loudest boy in all of improv. He loves to get technical about improv theory and play slowly and patiently with a focus on character and relationship. David is a founding member of Baltimore's longest-running indie team, Local Spot, as well as a member of the BIG house team Owl Legs, BIG Time, and DM/co-director for Tabletop Live, among others. The monoscene is his one true love, and he will evangelize Camp Improv Utopia to anyone who will listen. About Highwire Improv: Highwire Improv is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization based in Baltimore, Maryland. Our mission is to steward a community of artists committed to growth, collaboration, joy, and justice — in Baltimore and around the world — through improvisational theater. Allen R. Wells & DeAndra Hodge: "Yvonne Clark and Her Engineering Spark" | Enoch Pratt Free Library - Waverly Branch

Baltimore
Arts
Literary Arts
Based on a true story, this inspiring picture book is about a curious, tinkering girl who grew up to become one of the first Black female engineers for NASA – for fans of Ada Twist, Scientist and Counting on Katherine. Yvonne Clark had an engineering spark—an instinct for figuring out how things worked. Broken lamp? She screwed, rewired, and wrenched until…light! Wrecked radio? She twisted, snipped, and hammered until…music! Clogged furnace? She picked, plucked, and cleared until…heat! When she grew up, Yvonne’s problem-solving power took her to NASA, where fellow engineers had a serious problem with the Saturn V rocket’s F-1 engine: It had hot spots—high temperatures in the engine. Can Yvonne Clark and her engineering spark solve the problem? In an electric tribute, Allen R. Wells artfully tells the life story of his favorite engineering professor who also happened to be one of our nation’s most influential African American engineers. DeAndra Hodge’s bright illustrations explode with energy, matching the vibrance of Yvonne as a creative child and following her rise to NASA and beyond. About the Author: Allen R. Wells is an author and engineer. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi. He studied Architectural Engineering at Tennessee State University in Nashville. He is the author of It's Pride, Baby! and Yvonne Clark and Her Engineering Spark. He currently lives in Virginia. About the Illustrator: DeAndra Hodge is an illustrator and character designer based in Washington D.C. She graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Art from the University of Montevallo. She is the illustrator of Yvonne Clark and Her Engineering Spark by Allen R. Wells. DeAndra grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, a.k.a “Rocket City” where Yvonne Clark spent a summer working on the Saturn V booster engine.
