Alexandra Tolstoy in conversation at Myriad Antiques during the Curator&Maker pop up. Curator&Maker presents traveller, adventurer and broadcaster Alexandra in conversation with reverse glass artist Octavia Mackenzie and glass-blower Emsie Sharp as part of its ‘A Time of Gifts’ show featuring the work of 12 contemporary British designers and makers. The show’s inspiration is taken from Patrick Leigh Fermor’s memoir of his journey by foot across Europe in 1933, encountering the old Central European world of princes and peasants, with its glittering candlelit dinners, plush velvets and furs, snow-clad castles, mounted horsemen and gilded carriages – a rich and beguiling world soon to be swept away by war, modernisation and profound social change. --- Alexandra Tolstoy, an Anglo-Russian mother, adventurer, author and TV presenter who organises adventurous horse-riding holidays in Kyrgyzstan, and runs The Tolstoy Edit, a curated shop of her favourite interiors discoveries. Octavia Mackenzie, an artist and illustrator based in Somerset whose childhood spent between the Far East and the Highlands of Scotland instilled in her a love of exploring landscapes and who has creating for the show a beautiful collection of jewel-like reverse glass paintings, like icons in gilded frames, depicting scenes redolent of the Central European landscape with its mountains, tumbling streams, castles, and majestic trees – an evocation of the people-filled landscapes of an age before mechanisation. Emsie Sharp, a glass-blower who studied for in Venice on the Island of Murano, famous for its glass furnaces, and now works from her own studio in a converted cowshed on an organic farm where she has created for the show a range of richly coloured wine glasses, colourful tableware, lighting and sculpture. --- All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to St Gregory’s Foundation, a UK based charity which supports disabled children and teenagers throughout Eastern Europe. https://stgregorysfoundation.org.uk
