È il 1947 e la guerra in Italia è finita. Nella pineta del Tombolo, tra Pisa e Livorno, una parte di popolazione si rifugia e cerca di trarre profitto dalle condizioni provocate dalla guerra. Tombolo è un mondo a sé, regolato da leggi non scritte, dove regna una voglia di vivere brutale, disperata, imperiosa, che travolge ogni ostacolo. Pia è una segnorina e dall’ospedale in cui verrà ricoverata per le malattie veneree racconta il mondo di Tombolo e il dramma delle donne che, spinte dalla miseria, si accompagnano ai soldati americani. Damasco è un rastrellatore di mine. Anche se la guerra è finita, l’Italia è disseminata di ordigni e gli americani lasciano agli italiani il compito di sminarla. Per questo lavoro difficile e pericoloso vengono reclutati anche i civili e poiché grande è la disoccupazione e grande la miseria, molti, come Damasco, accettano di rischiare la vita. Damasco incontrerà Pia all’ospedale e se ne innamorerà a prima vista. Tornerà a cercarla – e non gli sarà facile trovarla – deciso a esprimerle il suo amore. La pineta del Tombolo è una cicatrice sempre aperta. Oggi quella pineta tra Livorno e Pisa è divenuta Camp Darby, una delle basi logistiche americane più importanti d’Europa e che ha svolto un ruolo decisivo durante la guerra fredda e in tutte le guerre che seguiranno la caduta del muro di Berlino.
