James VI: The Power of the Favourite | Falkland Palace & Garden

James VI: The Power of the Favourite | Falkland Palace & Garden

Falkland
Cultural Experiences
Join Gareth Russel in Falkland Palace's Chapel Royal for an evening of fascinating tales from the life of James VI at this talk, The Power of the Favourite James VI is most famous for his alleged love affairs in England, particularly with the Duke of Buckingham. However, his private life when he was in Scotland is just as important - and just as fascinating. Nicknamed ‘Queen James’ in his lifetime, James VI and his favourites helped shape the Scottish monarchy in the late 16th century. There were even rumours that James had fallen in love with an English spy. In this talk, Gareth Russell, author of the new critically acclaimed biography ‘Queen James,’ explores how power, passion, and plots mixed in James’s court. PRAISE FOR QUEEN JAMES “A stellar example of how to write historical biography.” - Helen Carr “Serious when it needs to be and fun when appropriate. It is a superbly nuanced biography.” - The Sunday Times Please be aware the chapel is only accessable up one flight of spiral stairs. Doors open from 6:30pm. Some of the popular TV series Outlander was filmed in Falkland, and one of the main characters develops her herbalist skills throughout it. I am a herbalist based in Falkland and a fan of the books and TV series, so I have enjoyed pulling these strands together to share with you in this workshop. We will meet at my herbal apothecary and then go for a wee walk to visit my herb garden nestled below Falkland Palace similar to the one at Castle Leoch to meet and collect some of the plants connected to Outlander. We will then bring them back to my apothecary to try some and make them into an Outlander inspired herbal remedy for you to take home. This will be an enjoyable way to connect with other Outlander fans and learn more about the plants used in the Outlander books and TV series, as well as their modern uses for supporting your own health and well being.
