On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, the "ART SHANGHAI European National Collection Exhibition" will focus on France, the birthplace of film, and work with the French Film Archive (La Cinémathèque française), an authoritative institution that owns the world's film archive and preserves, restores and disseminates French film heritage, to launch a special unit - the Sino-French women's film project "Her Creation". Female filmmakers have had an indelible influence on the origin, development, and promotion of film art. As the core of the project, the "She in Creation" exhibition proposes the concept of "women behind the camera", that is, the identity and perspective of women standing behind the camera as gazers, storytellers, and creators. It also explores the multiple roles of women in the film industry as directors, screenwriters, editors, photographers, etc., and shows how women tell the world they have experienced in movies after centuries of unremitting efforts, and how they rediscover and recreate their own subjectivity in the process. Using "she" as a slice of the times, we review and even rediscover the little-known contributions of women in the history of film development, and jointly outline a group portrait: they are active participants in the development of film, and the history they write and tell is the "other side" of human history that urgently needs to be completed. The exhibition will begin with behind-the-scenes footage of Alice Guy, the first female director in world cinema history, working on the set, showcasing the gaze and source image of the “woman behind the camera”. With the presentation of the three major exhibition chapters, "Appearing in the Other" and "Creating Cinema", nearly 20 rare films (or video clips) will be staged in turn, including "The Smiling Madame Buddy" by avant-garde director and film theory pioneer Germaine Dulac, "Music" by Marguerite Duras, the representative of the French "Left Bank School", "The Tale of the Female Statuette" by Agnès Varda, the grandmother of the French New Wave, "For Don Carlo" directed and acted by Musidora, the legendary "muse" of the silent film era, and "Human, Ghost, Love" by Huang Shuqin, the fourth-generation director who pioneered Chinese women's films. These films reveal at multiple levels the reflections on reality, the exploration of their own identities, the invention and experimentation of film art, and the free expression of the world by female filmmakers under different gender expressions, different role shaping, and different cultural backgrounds, constantly responding to the question of "what is film". Different from previous film screenings and film documentary exhibitions, the exhibition "Her in Creation" will create a space where an art gallery and a cinema meet and intersect, allowing the audience to enter a flowing historical narrative and step into the landscape of women's films in a pure viewing experience.
