Holly Carter is an award-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Bristol, UK. Two-time recipient of ‘Instrumentalist of the Year’ at the Americana UK awards (2023 & 2024) she is widely recognised as an exceptional fingerstyle guitarist and one of the UK’s only professional female pedal steel players. Drawing deeply from the well of the folk tradition, she harnesses an approach to song as a powerful tool for education and the preservation of legacy. Along with a showstopping approach to guitar that follows hot on the heels of the likes of Chet Atkins and John Fahey, her music weaves joyously catchy melodies with thought-provoking lyrics that pay homage to a diverse collection of musical and personal heroes. Her upcoming release ‘Leave Your Mark’ centres around a celebration and exploration of the ways we can leave our mark on the world after we’ve gone. Blending timeless storytelling with a distinct modern voice, the album showcases an impactful collection of songs that presents a truly original take on the landscape of folk and Americana. Recorded live and directly to tape at Middle Farm Studios in Devon - and accompanied by lino printed artwork designed and hand cut by Holly - it endeavours to capture a moment in time, in its most raw and honest state. For this official album launch show, Holly will be joined by her band, featuring Joe Wilkins on guitar, John `Parker on Double Bass & Matt Stockham Brown on drums. Nothing beats a home-cooked meal shared with family! And this is what inspires our Family Style Cookery Classes , a fun, laid-back homestyle cooking experience. Here, you will learn to prepare different dishes and then enjoy them with people who, like you, fuel our mission of supporting refugee and migrant chefs on their journey to integration. It’s a cookery class with a conscience, like they say! Your class will be led by our wonderful Chef Jaufferkhan from Sri Lanka at the Migrateful Cookery School in Bristol . At our Family Style Cookery Classes, you will be grouped with other participants and prepare dishes together as a team. Think of Chef Jaufferkhan as the head of the family! He will take care of dividing the class into groups, and each group will be responsible for creating one of the dishes. Of course, you are welcome and encouraged to move around during the class to learn about the other dishes being prepared. Throughout the evening, Chef Jaufferkhan will share stories about their food and culture, and explain how to prepare each of the dishes so you come away with some new cooking tricks and inspiration from Sri Lanka. I love my country, it is like paradise. I fondly remember picking fresh mango and guava. My passion for cooking began at age 10, helping my mum clean okra and learning to haggle in the fish markets with my dad. My father was a teacher and provided for our family and his four sisters. My mother was the oldest daughter in her family, so everyone would eat at our home. She was very generous and always cooked extra for those in need. Sadly, because of the civil war in Sri Lanka, my family had to move to Bahrain, There I worked in the welfare department of an Islamic NGO, but I was also able to use my cooking skills and I cooked for events for the Youth Group. My wife is also a very good cook and our dream is to open a restaurant. I’m very proud of my parents, they taught me to be generous, so I am excited to share my recipes, perfected over 40 years.” We’re excited to have you in the class!
