The Drama Book Shop presents, in association with Jay Michaels Global Communications, “A Conversation with Duncan Pflaster”- A talkback, signing, and live podcast recording. About the plays: Fourteen Hundred And Sixty Sketches Of Your Left Hand- When Paul gets invited to New Mexico for the summer for an artist’s retreat with his gay bromantic college buddy Alonso, he discovers that Alonso’s sister Blanca is tasking Paul with keeping Alonso on his medication for temporal lobe epilepsy, which he doesn’t want to take since he identifies with Van Gogh, who had the same condition. Paul and Blanca begin a clandestine affair as he increasingly offers teases of his body to Alonso as incentive to take his meds. All comes to a head when Blanca’s boyfriend Gabriel returns unexpectedly from the army. Tormented painters, sexual obsession, and crossed boundaries combine for a scorching new play. Harmony Hall- Set in 1968, the play is a poetic homage to the style of Tennessee Williams. Brother Linus is a monk who has been exiled to a remote monastery on an island, where he has lived alone in quiet contemplation for the past 20 years. Then, during a huge thunderstorm, a young man named Christian washes up on the beach with memory loss, and in giving succor to him, Linus begins to question to what exactly he is truly devoted, and if he has allowed his life to be wasted. A Touch of Cinema- Dina Kummerspeck, a filmmaker in a small country that isn't America, has been taken by the newly-fascist government and tortured for making supposedly seditious films. Now returned home under house arrest with an electric shackle on her ankle, she and her husband Tomas invite over their actor friends for a party, but unbeknownst to them, it's going to be a secret reading of Dina's new screenplay loosely based on her torture. About the Author: Duncan Pflaster is a multi-award-winning New York indie playwright. He is best known for his Beckettian romp The Underpants Godot, which has had regional productions with Theatre Rhinoceros in San Francisco and Nearly Naked Theatre in Arizona, as well as the New York off-off-Broadway productions. His plays A Touch of Cinema, Harmony Hall, and Fourteen Hundred and Sixty Sketches of Your Left Hand are published by Next Stage Press. He has written around 40 full-length plays and a plethora of one-acts, which have been produced all over. His plays vary widely in genre and style, from science fiction to Shakespearean verse drama. Scorpio Film Releasing produced his two films Strapped for Danger and its sequel Undercover Vice: Strapped for Danger II (available on Amazon, Tubi and GayBingeTV), as well as bringing him on to co-write Code Name: Dynastud and an episode of their series PansyVision, which is now available on YouTube. www.duncanpflaster.com or look him up on New Play Exchange for more. Welcome to the 2024 edition of ONMC's Ottawa New Music Festival! October 17th, 7pm - Almost Homeless On October 17th, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, ONMC's Artistic Directors SHHH!! Ensemble are joined by Ottawa-based violinist Erica Miller in the world premiere of Frank Horvat's Almost Homeless project. “Almost Homeless” examines the realities faced by a growing number of people, and more specifically, Ottawa residents, who are grappling with financial hardships and the high cost of living. Frank’s composition takes field recordings of Ottawa residents talking about their life/financial story, reflections on cost of living or struggling to make ends meet and combines this footage with music to create a highly personal Ottawa-centred composition. The evening will be rounded out with performances by SHHH!! Ensemble and Miller of works by Canadian composers Jocelyn Morlock, Harry Stafylakis, and others. After the show (and at intermission), join us in the OAG's Skylounge where refreshments will be available. October 18th, 7pm - Triple Header The second event of this year's fest features an epic triple header bringing together Halifax-based cellist, composer, and improviser India Gailey, Montreal-based percussionist David Brongo, and Ottawa-based harpist Michelle Gott. Each artist will perform a 30-40 minute set, followed by a short intermission. Gailey and Brongo will perform selections from their latest albums (Problematica and Confluence respectively), which includes music by Nicole Lizée, Claude Vivier, Thanya Iyer, Patrick Giguère, and more; while Gott will perform works by Ottawa-based composer John Gordon Armstrong and herself, alongside other pieces by Andrew Staniland, and Takashi Yoshimatsu. After the show (and at the intermissions), hang out with the ONMC Festival Artists in the OAG's Skylounge where refreshments will be available. We can't wait for YOU to hear THIS! ONMC's 2024 Festival is made possible through the generous support of the City of Ottawa, Ontario Arts Council, and the SOCAN Foundation; the Canadian Music Centre, and community partnerships with the Ottawa Art Gallery and Steinway Piano Gallery Ottawa. ONMC is committed to showcasing the very best in new music, with a focus on Canadian and Ottawa-based artists. The Ottawa New Music Festival's 2024 edition features the world premiere of one Ottawa based work (by Michelle Gott), the world premiere of Ottawa-born (and Toronto-based) Frank Horvat's Almost Homeless , and the entirety of the festival features 98% Canadian music by length!
