Meeting ourselves: exploring the human spirit through puppetry | Sowerby Parochial Hall, Yorkshire

Meeting ourselves: exploring the human spirit through puppetry | Sowerby Parochial Hall, Yorkshire

Sep 20, 2025 (UTC+1)
Thirsk
Arts Theater
About the event: This exciting event will include a performance of award-winning Ester Natzijl 's puppetry performance Watching: this is not a duet, a Q&A, workshop and refreshments. The event will appeal to adults interested in the power of puppetry - you do not need to have experience of puppetry or dance. All over the age of 15 are welcome. Ester's work focuses on multi-disciplinary theatre combining dance, drama and puppetry. It expresses the universal, timeless and psychological concepts of inner struggle, illusion, identity and the search for meaning. Her performances visualise hope, strength and perseverance. See Radius's video podcast with Ester below for more information. Ticket types: >Early bird booking online BY 20th AUGUST: £9.50 Tickets bought after 20th August: >Members of Radius , members of the British Puppet Guild , Friends of Holy Rood House in Thirsk: £12. >Non-members/General admission: £15. Buy by 12 noon 19th September, if you can, or buy on the door on the day: CASH ONLY. The performance: WATCHING has garnered superb reviews nationally and internationally. The performance is about a woman confronted with her own fears and desires, carving out a relationship that is by turns dreamlike, tender, challenging and comical. Who is this mysterious Being, where did the Being come from, and what can we learn about ourselves from this relationship? In the context of Ester’s performance, the puppet becomes an extension of the self, a mirror, or even a force of its own. The boundary between performer and puppet blurs, revealing a deeper truth: control and surrender coexist. The dance is a duet of one, and every moment beckons you to look closer questioning what you see while feeling what you can’t. The workshop: In the workshop Ester will teach participants some basic puppetry techniques and demonstrate its potential magic. She will also show you how a puppet can be both a mirror and a representation of your many selves. A puppet can evoke and express deep thoughts and feelings from inside, as well as bring out your cheekiest and most playful side. There will also be opportunity to practise working with hand puppets and puppets made from everyday objects. Let's explore this together! How to get to the venue: The event will take place in the main (large) hall - close to St Oswald's Church. Parking is available in the hall's car park or in the streets around the venue. Sowerby is a short walk from Thirsk, which has a rail station with direct trains from York. Please also see the hall's website Doors open 1.30pm. Please be seated no later than 1.55pm. Please also refer to FAQs. About Radius: Radius Religious Drama Society explores faith, belief, social and ethical questions, and what it is to be human. Medieval inspired Folding Chair | Applestore Cafe

Medieval inspired Folding Chair | Applestore Cafe

Sep 20, 2025 (UTC+1)
Scorton
Cultural Experiences
What's this course all about On this very special two day course you have the opportunity to hand craft your own medieval inspired folding chair. The design is based on a unique example that can be seen in Dumfries museum, and may be indeed be the only one ever made, and is certainly a very rare survivor. Quite roughly made from what appears to be oak, with a raw hide strung seat, I would think it was not made by a skilled carpenter, but perhaps a woodsman, farmer or other such person, and it's this unique aspect that give it a rustic fascination and mystery. Each chair made will itself be unique, but its heritage will be clear. The folding frame, back rails, seat rails, pivot rail, will be made from locally sourced hard wood poles with hand carved round tenons secured into individual round mortice holes using oak dowels. And rather than using rawhide for the strung seat, you will use natural jute cordage. My workshop is situated in Ghyll wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We will aim to work outside in the woods, but can make use of our indoor space if the weather dictates, and a wood-burner will keep us warm on colder days. What you need to know What you need to know Suitable for beginners or those with a little more experience. Minimum age 18 years. Start time each day, 10am, finish time 5pm, although we may finish earlier on day two. Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. Snacks and refreshments will be provided on the day, and you can get take out drinks from the café. Please bring your own lunch - the Apple Store Café is just a few metres away and makes excellent food, it can get quite busy, but you can order your lunch to bring back to the workshop if you wish (you will not have time for a sit in lunch at the café). Please note that toilets are situated up by the café. Origianl medieval folding chair in Dumfries musem. Information Source: Paul Williams Woodcraft | eventbrite

Introduction to Foraging Walk | Dalton Moor Farm - Vegan Fruit Farm and School of Sustainable Living & Wellbeing

Cultural Experiences
Foraging is Fun! There are many reasons why we might want to go foraging, perhaps for food, for medicines, or for materials, like our ancestors did, or perhaps for fresh air, exercise and fun with friends and family. But where to begin when you are not yet familiar with the wild plants growing around you? The best place to start is by going out foraging with an experiences guide who is knowledgeable about the plants and also knows how to teach you about them starting from the basics. Knowing the plants and being able to teach are two distinct skills. Join Jenny for a leisurely walk around Dalton Moor Farm lasting around 3 and a half hours. You will meet and be introduced to many plants along the way, some familiar and some not. You will be sure to be amazed at what you learn about these quietly unassuming 'weeds' and with your new found respect for these wonders of nature, you will never want to try to eradicate them from your garden again. Learn how to forage safely, legally and responsibly, with respect for the natural environment and sustainability. Learn what you need to look for when trying to identify a plant and how to go about it. Learn how plants change during the seasons and what the plants offer us as the year passes. Learn too how to harvest, preserve, store and prepare wild plants for food, medicine and materials. Joins us for a single walk or return at different times during the year to see how the plants and their surroundings change. The regular walks explore the farm hedgerows and meadows. Most of the terrain is level and relatively flat, with a few gentle slopes. The grass surfaces may not be suitable for users of mobility aids at certain times of the year, and depending on the type of vehicle. Please check before booking. In many months of the year the ground can be muddy. There are prickly thistles, brambles and stinging nettles that can grab your ankles, and there is always the risk of biting insects, including the possibility of ticks, so we recommend always wearing sturdy waterproof boots, and keeping your legs and feet fully covered at all times of the year. Our unpredictable weather means that it is always best to be prepared for sun or monsoon like weather. To record what you see, remembers to bring your camera / phone camera, perhaps a notebook / sketchbook and pen/pencil. You will not need a basket as we will be learning, not collecting the plants / fungi. You will be invited to taste many of the plants during the walk. Please advise the walk leader of any allergies or sensitivities before trying the plants. At the end of the walk we encourage you to choose one or two plants that are easy to find, identify and work with, so you can become more familiar with them during the following months to deepen your understanding and knowledge of foraging. At the end of the walk there is also the opportunity to visit our shop where it is possible to purchase our own home grown and hand made preserves and juices. Your foraging walk entitles you to free membership of our private Facebook foragers group, which is slowly being developed. Your own contributions to the group are welcome. Please check you tickets for important information about the venue. Please read and acknowledge our policies. Information Source: Dalton Moor Farm | eventbrite

For centuries women have gathered in circles to support, share and empower each other. Thrive Circle has been designed to provide a safe space for women to come together, be inspired and supported, and achieve personal growth. We will cover all aspects of life including business, health, finances, relationships, careers and wellbeing. The Morning Each event starts with time to get to catch-up, meet new people and reconnect with familiar faces. Refreshments are provided. Our speaker this month is the brilliant Vikki Ellison , an Advanced Menopause Specialist Nurse who owns the Calm Menopause Clinic in Apperley Bridge. Vikki is accredited by the British Menopause Society, and has over 33 years of experience in the NHS. Whilst working in primary care, Vikki developed a strong passion for women’s health, particularly in supporting women through the challenges of perimenopause and menopause. This led her to focus her expertise in this area, becoming a dedicated female health nurse and advocate for better menopause care. In response to the growing number of women struggling to access accurate advice and effective treatment, Vikki launched her private clinic, Calm Menopause & Wellbeing Clinic in Apperley Bridge, in February 2025. The clinic offers personalised, evidence-based care in a supportive environment—giving women the time they deserve to understand and manage their symptoms. In this Months Session Vikki will provide clear information about perimenopause and menopause—including symptoms, treatment options, and practical advice for managing this life stage. She will cover both hormonal and non-hormonal approaches to help women make informed decisions about their care. Information Source: Thrive Circle | eventbrite

This course is suitable for anyone interested in learning how to take a piece of wild wood found on a beach, in a woodland or elsewhere, and giving it a new life. No previous experience is necessary, just a love of wood and a curious nature! Minimum age 18 years, however please ask if you are interested in a younger person attending. As with all our courses we can arrange a private booking for an individual or small group on an alternative date, please just get in touch. An idea of what the course will cover: where to find wildwood how to assess its potential basic tool selection and safety and how to set up a basic work station on a budget initial cleaning and preparation dealing with problem areas such as decay, splits & cracks shaping, including splitting, & cutting finishing and presentation. a brief look at some more advanced tools & techniques follow up advice after the course has finished This course is more about developing skills and knowledge that you can apply at home, rather than everyone making a particular item. You will get the opportunity to try a range of simple tools and techniques, but you may not finish any one piece on the day. In fact most participants go home with several pieces to continue working on. You are welcome to bring any wildwood you may have knocking about and we can take a look. You never know, it may hide some cool woody secrets! We will spend time exploring the surrounding woodland in search of interesting pieces to fire the imagination and to work on, and aim to be based outside all day, so please do dress for the weather, including sturdy footwear and a waterproof jacket just in case. If the weather proves to be troublesome we can make use of our indoor workspace, and a wood burning stove will keep us warm in the colder months. , Information Source: Paul Williams Woodcraft | eventbrite

This course is designed to get you as involved as possible - this includes identifying, picking and tasting a range of wild species that will be found on the day. There will also be samples of wild food and drink for everyone to get stuck into and a pre-made wild snack! The focus with all of our workshops is on the 4 'F's of Foraging: Fungi, Fruit, Flowers and Foliage . We aim for an array of these elements on every session we run (weather and season permitting!) Event sold out or can't make this date? Head to www.foragebox.co.uk/workshops or view our Eventbrite profile to browse all available sessions. What To Expect Our 'Forage & Nibble' workshops are exactly that: you will spend the day learning how to forage with your tutor and then be treated to a 'wild snack' to put it all into context! These have become our most popular events and are available at numerous locations around the country. DURATION: 3 hours (approx 2.5 hours of foraging and 30 mins preparing and eating your wild snack) We like to keep some elements a surprise for the day, but here is what you can expect from your foraging workshop: a short introduction regarding the safety and format of the day discussions around foraging tips, safety, ethics, etiquette, sustainability and the law a circular walking route taking in different growing environments around the site. Expect a route of around 2-3km predominantly on footpaths a closer look at edible wild species and any poisonous lookalikes by a professional forager a chance to slow the pace of modern life down, meet new people and immerse yourself in a soul-nourishing activity, reconnecting with nature and discovering new flavours small tasters of wild food - this may even include freshly-picked items straight from the wild and a wild snack. Your wild snack might be something we find on the day freshly cooked in the woods, a hunk of homemade sourdough with some wild pickles and preserves, or even a big slice of cake (our tutors are decent cooks too so it could be something even better!) our workshops are run in a welcoming and informal fashion, where attendee questions and contributions are encouraged after the event, you will be sent a follow-up email containing a list of everything we found on the day. Please do not expect photos or descriptions in this email - it is purely a list for reference purposes, and we find it helps people do further research in their own time. Please note: as with most of our events, this is an educational experience and not a 'basket-filling' session . At the end of the session, there may be a small selection of our wild products and workshop vouchers available to purchase (card and cash accepted). This is a recent element of our events after enough attendees made enquiries about it - there is no pressure to buy anything having already bought tickets but sometimes people want a souvenir to take with them! Please speak to your tutor about this at the end. Who Is This Workshop For? These events are perfect for everyone - families, bushcrafters and dog-walkers alike! Nobody is made to feel out of their depth or silly for not knowing what certain things are, so these events suit absolute novices to more experienced hobby foragers alike. We strongly believe that foraging is for everyone , with all demographics welcome, regardless of age, ability, gender or ethnicity. Please read our FAQs further down the page to find out about dogs, children and mobility. IMPORTANT INFORMATION KIT LIST: What to bring with you DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: You will be asked for any dietary requirements when completing your booking. Please note that our workshops may not be suitable for vegans and coeliacs unless you inform us of these dietary requirements in advance - we may use butter or bread, for example. Bookings made within 48 hours of the event start time may not allow for your tutor to cater for specific dietary requirements - please get in touch if this is a concern. Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to the destination. EXACT MEETING POINT: The meeting point will be in the main car park. Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/h1fZhsGU3225EEJ79 What3Words: https://w3w.co/romantics.downhill.fidelity PARKING: Pay & display parking is available at this venue. Please be considerate when leaving your car and do not block gates or access for other road users, ensuring you park as near to the adjacent car as possible to allow others to park in the same area. TOILETS: Toilets are not available at this location but may be available nearby. Please arrive well in time for the start of the workshop, allowing extra time for the distance from your parked car to the meeting point and any toilet trips - we don't tend to wait for late-comers! Your foraging guide for the day should arrive on site at least an hour before the start and will start gathering the group together approximately 15 minutes before the official start time. If you cannot find your tutor around that time, there is a chance you are looking in the wrong place, so please check the event information for the exact location (not the postcode) Signage can sometimes be limited, so keep an eye out for anyone with a foraging basket! Minimum number of guests for this event to go ahead: 8 people PLEASE NOTE: We do not provide guests with a contact telephone number for your tutor. This is for privacy puropses but also because it is impractical to do so - your tutor simply wouldn't be able to take a call whilst with a group. If you need to get in contact, please use the email function via eventbrite or our website . Start getting excited! Друзья! 1го октября в Лондоне пройдет концерт Семена Слепакова! Билеты доступны только на Lower Balcony (Circle), и рассадка происходит по принципу first come first served, а именно, тот кто пришел раньше, тот и занял лучшее место. Refunds: tickets can be refunded in case of the event cancellation or moving to another day ONLY При себе иметь ID Билеты включают сбор на восстановление заведения в размере £1 EN: A long-awaited return after two years! Semyon Slepakov grew up in a family where humour was an integral part of life: sharp jokes, anecdotes, and funny stories were a constant presence. His father was from Rostov, his mother from Pyatigorsk, just like Semyon himself. However, his family roots extend further—to Ukraine: Odesa, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Chernobyl. Both of his grandfathers were economists and envisioned an academic career for their grandson. However, during his school years, the future artist was far from the image of a diligent intellectual heir: he could break a desk or throw something at passers-by from a window. Following family traditions, Slepakov wrote a PhD dissertation analysing the economic efficiency of the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts compared to their French counterparts. However, academia did not bring him creative fulfilment. The desire to make people laugh took over. His first attempts at humour were far from successful. As he recalled: “My father advised me not to laugh until I had told the punchline. And not to laugh alone—wait for others to laugh first.” This lesson stayed with Semyon for life. True success came in the field of comedy: witty song lyrics, popular TV projects, millions of online views, scripts, and the production of iconic comedy series—Slepakov became one of the best in Russia. But everything changed with the outbreak of war. Slepakov took a firm anti-war stance, which led to a ban on his work in Russia. Interestingly, in an old interview, he once joked about such a scenario: “Will they ban me? Cut off my hand? Which songs will they ban—only the funny ones or all of them? Will they forbid me to sing altogether? Well, then I’ll write books, poems, do stand-up. The main thing is to express myself and maintain a connection with people. The method of communication does not matter.” That is exactly what happened. His concerts continue to sell out worldwide. For two years, Slepakov lived in Israel, but he has only now decided to return to the stage—and on a grand scale. Five concerts in five cities, almost completely sold out with minimal advertising—a clear sign that the audience remembers, loves, and awaits him. His new programme will include everything: dialogue with the audience, jokes, songs, reflections on life, and stories of what has happened over the past two years. On stage stands a man labelled a “foreign agent” by Russian authorities, an Israeli citizen by passport and at heart, who continues to write, sing, film, and move forward. These will be special evenings—filled with humour, warm interactions, and the important realisation that life goes on. For Semyon Slepakov and for his fans. Age restriction: 18+. Valid physical photo ID is required Tickets include £1 venue restoration levy Information Source: UK STAND-UP CLUB | eventbrite
