Richard Carter, a self-taught painter, arrived in the Roaring Fork Valley in 1971, leaving his mark on the local art scene. As Herbert Bayer's studio assistant in the late 1970s, Carter honed his skills in various artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, tapestry design, exhibition design, and environmental works, as well as architectural projects. Notably, Carter played a pivotal role in the transformation of the Holy Cross Power House into the esteemed Aspen Center for Visual Arts, now recognized as the Aspen Art Museum. Today, he continues to create masterpieces at his studio located along the picturesque banks of the Roaring Fork River in Basalt.
