Maestro’s Insights: Brahms Violin Concerto|Hong Kong Sinfonietta|Tuen Mun Town Hall | Tuen Mun Town Hall
Mar 9, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D stands tall as one of the most celebrated works for the violin of all time with its exquisite lyricism, effervescent energy and inextinguishable light. How does this work, written in the late 19th century for the legendary violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim, remain ever relevant on the concert platform today? How has this concerto, rather unusually straying from the virtuosic pyrotechnics and wow factors typical of that time but no less challenging in any way, captured the hearts of all? In this informative concert supported by demonstrations and explanations, Music Director Christoph Poppen and rising star violinist Fan Hiu-sing will guide you through the magic of this well-loved masterpiece.

Hankyung arte Philharmonic—Family Concert | Hong Kong Arts Festival 2024 | Hong Kong Cultural Centre | Hong Kong Cultural Centre
Mar 10, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
An energetic and fun-filled introduction to the power of live orchestral music for children by Prokofiev and Doming Lam to spark imaginations and shape young lives, brought to you by the dynamic Hankyung arte Philharmonic and conductor Wilson Ng.
A fairytale comes alive
thanks to the magic of an exuberant orchestra
Let your child’s imagination run wild at this enchanting concert inspired by a classical fairytale and mesmerising sound paintings. Prokofiev’s symphonic fairytale Peter and the Wolf features a narrator telling a children’s story, while different instruments in the orchestra illustrate the characters in the tale. The grandfather is a grumpy bassoon, the duck becomes an oboe, and you are sure to hear the fearsome wolf in the horns. This popular work from the classical repertoire is complemented by Insect World, composed by Doming Lam, the “father of Hong Kong modern music”. Five delightful movements sonically mimic the motion of various insects, including the busy bees, fluttering butterflies and the silkworm. Can you hear them all?
It takes the energetic and youthful exuberance of the Hankyung arte Philharmonic and conductor Wilson Ng to make the magic come alive! You don’t want to miss this marvellous opportunity for the young and young at heart to soak up the mind-blowing power of an exceptional orchestra while experiencing the thrill of a live performance.

Baltic Sea Philharmonic—Bright & Black | Concert | Hong Kong Arts Festival 2024 | Hong Kong Cultural Centre

Witness the magic when heavy metal meets a symphony orchestraWhat do you get when you combine a symphony orchestra, composers from the world of heavy metal, a wild conductor, a truly unique soloist and plenty of attitude and talent?
All of these elements collide in brilliant fashion in Bright & Black, a programme performed by the Baltic Sea Philharmonic featuring works created by figures from the Nordic heavy metal scene.
The Baltic Sea Philharmonic, led by conductor Kristjan Järvi, has long pushed the traditional orchestral model to new heights with a truly unconventional performance style, but Bright & Black goes even further, featuring soloist Eicca Toppinen (cellist and founder of Finnish metal band Apocalyptica), and music written by songwriters from metal bands such as Entombed A.D. and Watain.
Don’t miss this chance to experience the orchestra that embodies all that is innovative and progressive about the Nordic region, and witness the magic created when the world of heavy metal fuses with the world of classical music.

Minsoo Sohn Piano Recital | Hong Kong Arts Festival 2024 | HKAPA | Hong Kong
Mar 15, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Hong Kong
Piano virtuoso, recording artist, and 2006 Honens International Piano Competition winner Minsoo Sohn will set the stage ablaze in an all-Liszt recital, masterfully blending the nocturnal tenderness of the Consolations with the pyrotechnic fireworks of the Transcendental Études.
A true heir to Franz Liszt carries on composer’s legacy
Combining masterful virtuosity with artistic expression, Minsoo Sohn embodies the ideals of musical excellence in both his playing and his teaching. He studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun, and has recently been appointed Professor of Piano at his alma mater. Sohn is a highly sought-after piano teacher, and among his students is the piano prodigy Yunchan Lim, the youngest performer to win the Van Cliburn Piano Competition at the age of 18.
Much like Sohn, Franz Liszt was a genius performer with a natural aptitude for the stage. A prolific thinker and composer, his six Consolations are imbued with the melancholy and fervent devotion of a collection of poems entitled Poetic and Religious Harmonies, while the 12 Transcendental Études exploit every known piano technique in a set of highly original and harmonically daring structures. Musical intelligence and breathtaking virtuosity were the hallmarks of Liszt’s performance style, and he has found in Sohn a perfect heir to carry on his shining legacy.
Merging intellectual rigour with superior technique, and profound musicality with appealing intimacy, Sohn will take us on a journey of beautifully articulated and radiantly sparkling interpretations in this all-Liszt recital.
