William Kirk Dickson (1860 to 1949) was Keeper of the Advocates Library until 1925 when he became the first Librarian of the National Library of Scotland. Almost 100 years after the day Dickson was made National Librarian, join Neil Mackenzie KC, the present Keeper of the Advocates Library, to learn about Dickson's professional life in Parliament House and his essential role in the foundation of the National Library. Dickson was a careful recorder of life in Parliament House during his time there from the late Victorian era to before World War One. He described the struggle to find the right home for the cherished collections that the Advocates could no longer afford to keep. Dickson understood the fragile and timeless nature of the collections. This informed his actions to preserve and develop them for the benefit of the nation and academia. Dickson's enduring influence persists beneath the surface of both the Advocates Library and the National Library of Scotland. About the speaker Neil Mackenzie KC is Keeper of the Advocates Library. He was admitted as a member of Faculty in June 1999, took silk in 2019, and became Keeper in 2022. As Keeper, Neil is dedicated to preserving the Library’s best traditions while also meeting the contemporary needs of members to serve the administration of justice in Scotland. We're looking forward to welcoming journalist and serial house sharer, Alice Wilkinson , to the shop on Friday 24th October at 7pm as she chats to Helena Hamilton about how to navigate the choppy waters of communal living, from selecting the right housemate to the best ways to smooth over conflicts, in her new book, How to Stay Sane in a House Share . How do you keep it together when you're living together? If you’ve found yourself asking this question (returning home from a day of winning in the workplace only to realise you've lost the fight for your own living room — again) then it’s likely that you're one of the millions of people living in a house share in the UK, US and beyond. Between marriage rates dwindling and the cost-of-living soaring, house sharing is becoming more and more common – but that doesn’t stop it being one of the most complex living set-ups of the 21st century. Thankfully, Alice Wilkinson is here to help you stay sane when you're feeling stuck. Book your tickets today! - Doors: 6.30pm, event starts: 7pm, please arrive early to secure a good seat. Tickets are £3 and there is a Ticket & Book option which includes a signed copy of How to Stay Sane in a House Share by Alice Wilkinson. Collective Self-Legislation | Edinburgh Law School

Collective Self-Legislation | Edinburgh Law School

Oct 29, 2025 (UTC+1)

About the event Global law programs take largely for granted that law is about the self-legislation of human collectives located in a stable natural environment rendered available for the realization of human ends. Catastrophic environmental degradation calls for a critical reconfiguration of collective self-legislation, a reconfiguration that, amongst others, undoes the doctrinal split between private law and public law, on the one hand, and acknowledges the primacy of obligation over rights, on the other. Initiatives to ecologize property and to resocialize corporations build on these two transformations of our legal and political imaginary, intimating a novel concept of lawmaking as decentered self-legislation by collectives composed of humans and other-than-humans, which, joined together in relations of mutual dependency, strive to realize more-than-human ends: geopolities. The neologism’s Greek root, geos, suggests that global law programs must become terrestrial if their claim to approach law globally is to be credible and relevant as a response to the Anthropocene. About the speaker Hans Lindahl holds the chair of legal philosophy at Tilburg University, the Netherlands, and a chair of global law at the Law Department of Queen Mary University of London. He obtained law and philosophy degrees at the Universidad Javeriana, in Bogotá, Colombia, before taking a doctorate at the Higher Institute of Philosophy of the University of Louvain (Belgium) in 1994. His primary areas of research are legal and political philosophy. Lindahl has published numerous articles in these fields. His monograph, Fault Lines of Globalization: Legal Order and the Politics of A-Legality , was published with Oxford University Press in 2013 (Italian and Spanish translations; a Japanese translation forthcoming in 2024). A follow-up monograph, Authority and the Globalisation of Inclusion and Exclusion , has been published with Cambridge University Press in 2018 (Portuguese translation; a Spanish forthcoming in 2023). His current research explores how the challenges raised by the Anthropocene demand reconsidering key features of the ways in which modern legal and political philosophy have conceptualized legal order. This project draws on and radicalizes his earlier research on issues germane to globalization processes, such as the concept of legal order in a global setting; a politics of boundary-setting alternative to both cosmopolitanism and communitarianism; transformations of legal authority and political representation. In dealing with these topics Lindahl draws on (post-)phenomenology and theories of collective action of analytical provenance, while also seeking to do justice to the nitty-gritty of positive law. Join us for a discussion with the 'Witches of Scotland' podcasters Dr Claire Mitchell, KC, and Dr Zoe Venditozzi as they discuss their book, 'How to Kill a Witch: A Guide for the Patriarchy'. Women in Scotland in the 1500s faced the very real threat of witch trial. Witch hunts ripped through the country for over 150 years, with more than 4,000 accused of witchcraft. The fate for the accused was strangulation, burning, or some other forms of grizzly excecution. This particularly rampant persecution of women was unique to Scotland. In order to understand why this happened here, Dr Claire Mitchell, KC, and Dr Zoe Venditozzi have researched the entire process, from identification to accusation, torture to, confession, execution and beyond. With characteristically sharp wit and a sense of outrage, they attempt to inhabit the minds of the persecutors, to reveal why the Patriarchy went to such extraordinary lengths to silence women, and how this legally sanctioned victimisation proliferated in Scotland and around the world. About the speakers Leading human rights lawyer Claire Mitchell, KC, and writer, Zoe Venditozzi formed the 'Witches of Scotland' campaign with the aim of shining a light on the historic injustice of the Witch Trials. As a result, on International Women's Day, 2022, the First Minister of Scotland issued a formal state apology - the first time in 300 years there had been any formal recognition of those who were most wrongly accused. In 2022, Claire and Zoe were made Doctors of Laws by the University of Dundee in 2022 in recognition of their work. When you book an event, your personal information will be held and used by the National Library of Scotland and our third-party suppliers for the purposes of allowing you to attend the event and for audience research. It promises to be a spectacular live show featuring a full live band, vocalists and a string & brass ensemble, performing in some of the most breathtaking buildings in the UK. Witness the iconic sound of Pink Floyd's vast and ethereal catalogue of music, performed live by the acclaimed Let Me In House Band, alongside the Mike Nowland String and Brass Ensemble - featuring a total of 18 musicians, embodying the timeless songs of one of the most popular artists of all time. Expect to hear hits and hidden gems from across their discography, with a particular focus on the inimitable run of records from the 1970s, including Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall. We are welcoming the return of the acclaimed band from An Evening of Radiohead, featuring additional musicians to employ the great, epic sound created by Pink Floyd. The band will be fronted by Christopher Buckle and Musical Director - Ewan Steady, and will include musicians and Floyd lovers - Alfie Woods, Bruce Higgs, Daniel Anketell, Josh Semans, Eleanor Kinsey, Lydia Karaviotis and more. The band will be accompanied by very special guests and nationally renowned string and brass players - Mike Nowland, Mathias Svensson, Caroline Bodimead, Kate Scrivens, Laurie Dempsey, Hannah Paterson, Julian Turner, Andy Clennell & Chris Beagles. NOTE -We believe that the arts have both the potential and responsibility to support the strengthening of communities and in actively fighting against injustices that provide a select few in society opportunities that should be accessible to everyone. We are constantly pushing ourselves to find new ways to collaborate with individuals and communities across the Midlands in seeing how we can develop projects that aren’t just artistically enjoyable but that enable space for reflection on how to make our communities more open, safe and without prejudice. Because of this, we do not want to put any financial barriers between our work and our audiences - if you find this is the case, please email us on chris@letmeinpresents.co.uk and we can discuss alternative ticketing arrangements to enable you to come to the event if you wish to. FAQs When do doors open? Doors will open 45 minutes before the music begins, meaning they will open at 6.45pm. This will give you ample time to come into the space, find your seat and relax before the music begins at 7.30pm. What are the stage times? There is no support act, so the music will begin at 7.30pm sharp. There will be two sets with a 20 minute interval, with the event finishing around 10.15pm. Will there be strobes/haze/flashing lights? Yes, there will be strobes and flashing lights throughout the performance, so we recommend that this production is not suitable for those with epilepsy or that struggle with strobes and flashing lighting. Haze will be used where possible, venue permitting. What age is the performance suitable for? This performance is suitable for all ages, however, there are some intense lighting and sound moments throughout the evening, and we would recommend parental discretion. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult (18+). What are the seating arrangements? When you book your tickets, you can select which section you would like of unreserved seating. This gives you first-come-first-served access to that section of seating and does not guaratee you a particular seat. We will ensure that all parties are sat together. Is there disabled access? It is incredibly important to us that our performances are accessible to everyone that wants to come - therefore, we have ensured that An Evening of Pink Floyd is accessible to all. We recognise that not all accessibility is visible, therefore we have separated ticketing into two bands - Accessible and Wheelchair Accessible. Please ensure you book the specific ticket for your needs, this way we can make sure we have ample staff and space to make sure you are all as comfortable as possible. From here, our staff will ensure everyone is happy and comfortable. Please note that companion tickets are free of charge, when purchased with an Accessible Ticket. What is the view like in the restricted view section? The restricted views seats are at the sides of the main nave, and can range from a decent view to being behind a pillar. These are unreserved, so you can end up getting a great spot if you arrive early, however, the price reflects the inconsistency of these views. Will there be refreshments on site? There will be an affordable selection of refreshments being sold on site, and you are encouraged to buy from the on site bar to help the Cathedral continue the community engagement work it does. Will there be parking on site? There are various car parks nearby to the venue, including city centre parking. Will there be toilets on site? Yes, there are toilets on site. What if I need more information? Feel free to email Chris at chris@letmeinpresents.co.uk with any questions you may have. We are always happy to help and our door is always open! Fire in the Temple Fire in the Temple One of the most influential spiritual teachers of the 20th century, joins with the Archangel Michaél to confront mysterious demons in 1923 Europe, as the Nazi party is beginning to emerge. “I want to kindle every human being to become a flame, shining its fiery essence from within.” Crafted from actual events and discourse, Fire in the Temple , dramatizes Rudolf Steiner’s final months and brings to the stage the people around him, including two extraordinary women, Marie Steiner von Sivers and Dr. Ita Wegman, both of whom stood by him until the very day of his death – and beyond. Their personal conflicts, hopes and sorrows are sensitively portrayed in this rigorously researched drama. Laurie Portocarrero and Glen Williamson, with eurythmists Sea-Anna Vasilas and Zachary Dolphin, developed this play – through numerous revisions and staged readings – for several years before director John McManus staged a full-cast professional production in September, 2023, in Copake and Spring Valley, NY, and in Kimberton Hills, PA. The director and playwright tightened the script to a dynamic ensemble performance. Previous readings of the script in Copake, NY; Beaver Run, PA; Los Angeles; Santa Cruz; Sacramento; Boulder and Denver; Hudson, NY; Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont had drawn profound and encouraging responses and anticipation of the full production. Audience responses to Fire in the Temple readings “—meticulously researched—artistically crafted—stunningly performed. . . a powerful feeling for the weaving of destiny.”– Gloria Kemp , Waldorf-education consultant “Truly amazing. I sat mesmerized. . . [it] was so full and the images captivating. I am still feeling the effects from it. . . beautiful experience. It will be with me for some time!!!” – Diane Prusha , Actress,Shakespeare & Company, Lenox, MA “It was deeply moving…wonderfully written…and the same questions live today… With tears I’m asking: Will we awake?” – Irena Valujeva , Camphill USA “True and compassionate writing.” “I knew all of this, but this play brings it all together in a vivid and moving story.” “The message, that Christ’s light combats the forces of darkness, comes through loud and clear.” “Now I feel I’ve really met Rudolf Steiner.” “Truly redemptive.” “This needs to be seen.” and from our team . . . “It is an extraordinary play that has been enthusiastically received as an epic of superb storytelling during its numerous two- and four-person play-reading performances over the past three years. Now, our task is to turn this successful play-reading epic into a dramatic piece of theater with a full ensemble cast.”– John McManus , Director “I believe that artistic activity, through this play, can greatly enhance our experience of these momentous historical events and relationships.”– Barbara Renold , Director and Producerof Rudolf Steiner’s Mystery Dramas Information Source: Anthroposophy in Edinburgh | eventbrite
