From 31 August to 12 October, 2024, WKM Gallery is pleased to present “Meridiem”, Japanese artist Megumi Shinozaki’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Shinozaki has attained recognition as the founder and creative director of edenworks, a creative studio that specialises in utilising flowers and plants to create artworks, installations, and experiences that function as catalysts for meaningful connection to people and nature. “Meridiem” is an artistic extension of her work with the studio, and will present a series of around 200 brand new paper flower works all handmade by the artist, as well as a fresh flower installation composed of local flora. These two contrasting approaches - one that makes use of paper to create eternal blossoms, the other a tribute to the ephemerality of the natural cycle of life - together represent the central theme of Shinozaki’s practice, in which the flower becomes a symbolic way to explore the profound area between alive and not, temporary and eternal. Originally a florist, Shinozaki’s perspective was shaped by her experience working with flowers as objects with short life spans. Within the context of a store, flowers became commercial items that were either consumed or discarded; often, the amount being discarded caused Shinozaki to feel a sense of uneasiness and distress. This dissatisfaction with the wasteful system surrounding our thoughtless methods of flower consumption functioned as the starting point for laying the foundation of her philosophy: to fulfil the potential of these living beings and respect the full cycle of their existence, so that we may embrace the future.

Founded in 2011, Tokyo- and London-based A.A. Murakami is a duo of Alexander Groves (b. 1983) and Azusa Murakami (b. 1984). Working across a range of disciplines, including sculpture, installation, film and digital art, the duo creates spectacular scenes that take their science-based inquiry to the next level. The exhibition features two immersive, interconnected installations that offer an otherworldly experience: in the first, rings of fog travel through space into the digital realm; in the second, clouds of floating bubbles drift overhead. Using ephemeral materials and innovative use of specially developed technology, these two large-scale installations inspire viewers to philosophically ponder the nature of reality and artificial constructions, and question the growing importance of digital life in today's society. The exhibition will expand on the concept of "ephemeral technology" pioneered by the duo, using innovative technological research to reimagine the beginning of everything while envisioning possible future scenarios.

Henri Stein was born in Austria in 1934 and moved to the United States. He studied under the famous American graphic designer Paul Rand at Yale University and was well versed in telling stories through images. After moving to Hong Kong in 1961, he found that this multicultural city was full of vitality and was transforming into an international hub in manufacturing, trade, finance, leisure and tourism. Using concepts and contrasts, he juxtaposed elements of multiple cultures and created a new and infectious way of image communication. This playful, unexpected and intriguing language has made his designs resonate with a wide and diverse audience. The exhibition is divided into two parts, first tracing Henry Stein’s early experiences and influences, and then taking viewers through Henry Stein’s unique designs, from large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects that reflect Hong Kong’s development to plans that reflect the city’s ambitions to become a tourist resort. Showcasing Henry Stein’s work during Hong Kong’s most prosperous decades, the exhibition illustrates the important role of graphic design in Hong Kong’s unique visual culture.
