Oakland
The semi-annual business meeting will be held on Monday, June 9th at 9:30 a.m. at Betty Woo's house (5859 Snake Rd., Oakland, 94611). Please come to hear a summary of the year and to vote on board members up for re-election or election for the 2025-2027 years. Panel Discussion You'll be able to pose questions/topics to a panel of seasoned teachers from the Alameda County branch. Here are some examples: 1) Describe a moment when you've realized you've truly helped a student, whether it's in reaching a new level of playing or in their personal growth. 2) Why do you teach? What are the highs and lows of teaching that you've experienced? 3) What are the expectations you set for a student joining your studio and can you maintain that in this era where many students are spread so thin across competing activities? What expectations do you set for the parents? 4) What do you do about a student who appears to listen when you repeatedly make some kind of correction but who continues to play incorrectly in subsequent lessons? 5) What are the qualities of an excellent piano teacher? These are just sample questions. Please feel free to bring up anything you've been pondering - these seasoned teachers will likely have some insight to share. Vice President Joel Tepper will moderate. Music Exchange Help fellow teachers by bringing sheet music you no longer need or want. Potluck Lunch Stay for this part to relax, eat, and chat. Another Word for Love: Carvell Wallace with Sadie Barnette | Womb House Books
Jun 12, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Oakland
Join us at Womb House Books to celebrate the paperback launch of Carvell Wallace's Another Word for Love. Carvell will be in conversation with Oakland artist Sadie Barnette. In Another Word for Love, Carvell Wallace excavates layers of his own history, situated in the struggles and beauty of growing up Black and queer in America. Wallace is an award-winning journalist who has built his career on writing unforgettable profiles, bringing a provocative and engaged sensitivity to his subjects. Now he turns the focus on himself, examining his own life and the circumstances that frame it—to make sense of seeking refuge from homelessness with a young single mother, living in a ghostly white Pennsylvania town, becoming a partner and parent, raising two teenagers in what feels like a collapsing world. With courage, vulnerability, and a remarkable expansiveness of spirit—not to mention a thrilling, and unrivaled, storytelling verve—Another Word for Love makes an irresistible case for life, healing, the fullness of our humanity, and, of course, love. It could be called a theory of life itself—a theory of being that will leave you open to the wonder of the world. Carvell Wallace covers race, culture, arts, and sports for the New York Times Magazine and other outlets. He is the coauthor of 2019’s bestselling memoir The Sixth Man along with NBA champion Andre Iguodala, and his work has appeared in the New Yorker, GQ, Esquire, ESPN The Magazine, Slate, Glamour, and others. He lives in Oakland and is the father of two adult children. Sadie Barnette was born and raised in Oakland, California and holds a BFA from CalArts and an MFA from UC San Diego. She has presented solo exhibitions at venues such as The Kitchen in New York City, ICA Los Angeles, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, MCA San Diego, The San José Museum of Art, and The Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. Her work is in permanent collections including Brooklyn Museum, Guggenheim, LACMA, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Oakland Museum, Studio Museum in Harlem, The Walker, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Enjoy food, drinks and musica while getting to know more about the communities MI serves, how MI serves them and the people that have made and make this work possible. Our community is experiencing trying times of unprecedented uncertainty and fear. Now, more than ever, it is important for immigrants and immigrant supporters to unify our voices and collective power create change, but to also come together for moments of joy and love.
Together, we have helped increase access to Medi-Cal, filled the fridges of hundreds of local families, helped first generation students of color with their homework, helped immigrants in their U.S. Citizenship journey and have made many feel at home.
Join us for an evening of love and hope and an opportunity to raise funds for MI to continue offering comprehensive wrap-around services to the over 3,000 immigrant families it serves annually in the Bay Area. We look forward to continuing to make a difference together!
The Multicultural Institute - Work & Mission
Since 1991, The Multicultural Institute have been a home for the day laborer and domestic worker community—the backbone of the Bay Area’s thriving economy. Since its inception MI has envisioned a community in which immigrants, regardless of their immigration status, are embraced and valued in the communities in which they live and work.
Our community is the backbone of our region’s economy and culture, but too often, and especially now in this political climate and threats from the current administration, they live in the shadows due to fear of retaliation, deportation and family separation.
At the Multicultural Institute, we partner with immigrants and their families on their journey to dignified housing, employment, educational success and medical care. With locations in Berkeley, Richmond, and Redwood City, our work is rooted in love and community belonging. Through deep relationships of trust, we provide a strong foundation for the future—standing with the immigrant community to improve working conditions, dismantle barriers, advocate for rights, and create opportunities for youth and families.
Most of all, The Multicultural Institute offers a true sense of home for all—a beacon of love, hope, and resilience.

Manjula Martin with Susanna Kwan: The Last Fire Season at Womb House Books | Womb House Books
Jun 18, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Oakland
Manjula Martin with Susanna Kwan: The Last Fire Season at Womb House Books Join us for an exciting in-person event featuring Manjula Martin and Susanna Kwan as they discuss The Last Fire Season, now in paperback. The Last Fire Season by Manjula Martin Awake in the Floating City by Susanna Kwan Told in luminous, perceptive prose, The Last Fire Season is a deeply incisive inquiry into what it really means—now—to live in relationship to the elements of the natural world. When Manjula Martin moved from the city to the woods of Northern California, she wanted to be closer to the wilderness that she had loved as a child. She was also seeking refuge from a health crisis that left her with chronic pain, and found a sense of healing through tending her garden beneath the redwoods of Sonoma County. But the landscape that Martin treasured was an ecosystem already in crisis. Wildfires fueled by climate change were growing bigger and more frequent: each autumn, her garden filled with smoke and ash, and the local firehouse siren wailed deep into the night.
In 2020, when a dry lightning storm ignited hundreds of simultaneous wildfires across the West and kicked off the worst fire season on record, Martin, along with thousands of other Californians, evacuated her home in the midst of a pandemic. Both a love letter to the forests of the West and an interrogation of the colonialist practices that led to their current dilemma, The Last Fire Season, follows her from the oaky hills of Sonoma County to the redwood forests of coastal Santa Cruz, to the pines and peaks of the Sierra Nevada, as she seeks shelter, bears witness to the devastation, and tries to better understand fire’s role in the ecology of the West. As Martin seeks a way to navigate the daily experience of living in a damaged body on a damaged planet, she comes to question her own assumptions about nature and the complicated connections between people and the land on which we live. MANJULA MARTIN is coauthor, with her father, Orin Martin, of Fruit Trees for Every Garden, which won the 2020 American Horticultural Society Book Award. Her nonfiction has appeared in The New Yorker, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Cut, Pacific Standard, Modern Farmer, and Hazlitt. She edited the anthology Scratch: Writers, Money, and the Art of Making a Living; was managing editor of Francis Ford Coppola’s literary magazine, Zoetrope: All-Story; and has worked in varied editorial capacities in the nonprofit and publishing sectors. She lives in West Sonoma County, California. SUSANNA KWAN is an artist and writer from San Francisco. Awake in the Floating City is her first novel.

While vacationing in a hunting lodge in the Austrian mountains, a middle-aged woman awakens one morning to find herself separated from the rest of the world by an invisible wall. With a cat, a dog, and a cow as her sole companions, she learns how to survive and cope with her loneliness. Allegorical yet deeply personal and absorbing, The Wall is at once a critique of modern civilization, a nuanced and loving portrait of a relationship between a woman and her animals, a thrilling survival story, a Cold War-era dystopian adventure, and a truly singular feminist classic.
Marlen Haushofer (1920–1970) was an Austrian author of short stories, novels, radio plays, and children’s books. Her work has had a strong influence on many German-language writers, such as the Nobel Prize–winner Elfriede Jelinek, who dedicated one of her plays to her. The Wall was adapted into the 2012 film, directed by Julian Pölsler and starring Martina Gedeck.

Please join us at Womb House Books as Katharine Coldiron discusses her new book Out There in the Dark with author Anita Felicelli. Purchase your copy of Out There in the Dark Katharine Coldiron sees her life through a film projector. She watches The Sound of Music and observes that time is peculiarly preserved in a narrative film; she watches Singin' in the Rain and finds truth and falsehood layered in it like dental veneers; she watches Apocalypse Now and thinks about her father, and a certain Pulitzer-winning photograph of an American POW. Out There in the Dark is a dynamic collection of essays that blends film criticism with memoir and fiction, as well as lists, visual diagrams, and Wikipedia collaging. It plumbs deeply some of our most knotted, abstract concepts: truth, kindness, the West, the female body, war, and—inevitably—Hollywood. Katharine Coldiron is the author of Ceremonials, Junk Film, and Wire Mothers. Her work as a book critic has appeared in the Washington Post, the Guardian, theTimes Literary Supplement, and many other places; as an essayist, in Conjunctions, Ms., Booth, and elsewhere. She and her books have been profiled in three countries on radio and television. Find her at kcoldiron.com. Anita Felicelli is the author of How We Know Our Time Travelers, as well as Chimerica and the award-winning short story collection Love Songs for a Lost Continent. She is the books editor at Alta Journal. Her nonfiction has appeared in the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Slate, ZYZZYVA, and the New York Times (Modern Love), among other places. From 2021-2024, she sat on the board of directors for the National Book Critics Circle.
