Special exhibition "Something Chronicle - 100 years of challenges of Ina Seito" | INAX MUSEUMS
Apr 13, 2024–Mar 25, 2025 (UTC+9)
Tokoname
In 2024, Ina Seito (later INAX*1), founded in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, a town of six ancient kilns with a history of nearly 1,000 years, will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Its roots date back to 1766 (Meiwa 3), when the first Ina Chozaburo made tea utensils. As a master craftsman who inherited the pottery name "Chozaburo," the Ina family continued to make pottery in the field of ceramics for four generations. However, when Hatsunojo took over the family, he and his son Chotaro*2 (founder) read the trends of the times and made a transition to the ceramic industry. At the time of its founding, the main business was the manufacture of clay pipes and tiles, but after the war, it expanded to include products related to water-related areas. Inheriting the DNA of manufacturing cultivated in Tokoname, the numerous products that have been created and their origins overlap with Japan's progress toward rich homes and lifestyles.
This exhibition traces the history of manufacturing from Ina Seito to INAX, with a timeline and displays of epoch-making products and technologies. It also displays the teapots made by the successive generations of Chozo, inventions by Hatsunojo and his son, the first Japanese toilet with a warm water flushing function, and a bathtub made from FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic), the most cutting-edge technology at the time, as well as highlighting projects and ideas that unfortunately did not come to fruition, unraveling the ingenuity of our predecessors. We hope you will enjoy seeing the many innovations born from the challenging spirit of Ina Seito, who continued to strive and take on new challenges, saying, "We've got to do something."
