Cultural Experiences
Resilience and Resistance in Fragile Democracies | German Historical Institute

May 27, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Conferences
Panel Discussion organized by the German Historical Institute Washington, DC; Cosponsored by the American Historical Association, and the American-German Institute Washington, DC. "Civil society, acting through independent initiatives, provides the best guarantee that we will not return to the past." This statement by Václav Havel, the last president of communist Czechoslovakia and the first democratically elected president of the Czech Republic, highlights the crucial role of civic engagement in safeguarding modern democracies. Historians have long examined the factors contributing to the survival or demise of democracies, whether through gradual erosion or abrupt upheaval. Our panel discussion delves into this scholarship, focusing on Germany, Hungary, and Poland during the 20th and 21st centuries – nations where a significant portion of the electorate empowered illiberal leaders, thereby undermining key democratic institutions. The panel will explore what room for room civil society actors possessed to maintain resilience: How did they utilize – or fail to utilize – opportunities to resist the erosion of democratic structures? What critical junctures were missed in forming a robust democratic opposition to repressive regimes? What forms of resistance emerged from the grassroots, and what were the key tipping points that ultimately undermined societal and political resistance? By placing current global challenges within a strictly historical context, our distinguished panel will provide nuanced insights. Doors open at 5:30pm; panel discussion will begin at 6pm. This event will be streamed. Further details will be provided soon. Speakers: Michael Brenner (American University), Christina Morina (Univ. Bielefeld/ New School), Robert Nemes (Colgate College), Karolina Wigura (Univ. Warsaw); Moderators: Ken Pomeranz (Univ. Chicago) and Eric Langenbacher (AGI) Information Source: German Historical Institute Washington | eventbrite

Theater
JOIN US AT DCAC ON MAY 29TH 8:00PM EST Bela is a genre-blending one-woman show that uses the fictional podcast Faltar as a lens to examine what Black women are taught to be—and who we might become when we stop performing for others. Kutabela “Bela” Mvula is investigating the mysterious death of her best friend, Mikwa Jefferson. But this isn’t just a whodunnit. It’s a story about people-pleasing, perfectionism, and the pressure to be “the good one.” Through characters that are hilarious, heartbreaking, and deeply familiar, Bela invites the audience into a layered journey of grief, ego death, and self-discovery. From a villain-era bootcamp instructor to a grown woman still performing helplessness for male validation, the show exposes the stories Black women are told—and the ones we tell ourselves to survive. Created and performed by performer Renee Namakau Ombaba in collaboration with Director Krystal R. Ali , Bela is sharp, funny, and deeply moving. If you’ve ever struggled with boundaries, chased approval, or tried to be everything to everyone—this is for you. Bela is a one-woman show that explores sensitive and emotionally intense topics. While the performance uses humor, satire, and storytelling to guide the audience through these themes, some material may be triggering for certain viewers. DCAC is ADA-accessible. For additional accessibility needs or questions, please contact DCAC. DCAC Members are offered a 20% discount. Please contact DCAC or info@reneenamakauombaba.com to receive the code. Tour the "nation's home of science in America." Take a one-hour guided tour of the beautiful National Academy of Sciences building at 2100 C St., NW, Washington, D.C. Dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge in April 1924 and designed by architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, the building’s architecture is a unique fusion of classical elements and “irregular” forms, and celebrates the history and significance of science. On this tour, admire rich Hellenic, Byzantine, and Egyptian architectural influences and touches of Art Deco. Explore the Great Hall with iconography by Hildreth Meière and other ceremonial rooms with architectural sculpture by Lee Lawrie and murals by Albert Herter. You’ll also peek inside the acoustically brilliant Fred Kavli Auditorium, part of the 1970 wing. Enjoy artwork and exhibitions exploring intersections of art, science, and culture. This tour is organized by the Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences (CPNAS). CPNAS sponsors exhibitions, salons, theatrical readings, and other events that explore relationships among the arts and sciences. The NAS is a private, nonprofit institution that recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and — with the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine — provides science, technology, and health policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.
