To exist as Shanghai (a name which translates literally as "upper sea") is to be born of rivers and seas, to rise through the churning currents of trade and flux. The Pacific, which cradles this place, is most often seen as a site of inexhaustible resources, an ocean-wide quarry for extraction, for territorialization. Against these visions that reduce the ocean to resource or boundary, we have reimagined our ground floor as Wan Hai Hotel: a speculative hotel dedicated to the epistemology of seascapes, a space for unmooring, dismantling the borders that have framed and harnessed the seas we depend upon.

Taking "The Three-Body Problem" as the starting point Xu Bing, Liu Chuang, Liu Xin, Chen Zhe, Wang Ninghui, Rohini Devasher 15 groups of global artists Through comprehensive research methods such as residency at scientific research institutions, we bring you 15+ “research-based” artworks based on the Three-Body Problem. To what extent can we To truly understand the truth of the universe we live in? Scientific observations in different historical periods have led to different physical laws. If human scientific research is really interfered with by "smart particles" Will physics still exist? This exhibition will bring you A state of guessing and imagining before the real answer is revealed. The First Sight of Civilization aims to explore how the Three-Body Problem, as a science fiction work, cultural symbol and platform linking science and imagination, can generate creative practices that echo and intersect with it. The exhibition does not restore the scenes, visually translate or restate the concepts of the original Three-Body Problem, but takes the story of Three-Body Problem as a starting point and open question, and combines the original work to explore urgent and inspiring issues in current technological development and scientific research. The exhibition invites visitors to freely walk between the exhibition areas representing the two perspectives of Earth and extraterrestrial civilizations, to speculate on the intelligence or life forms "other-than-us". There is no strict boundary between the three spaces, just as our imagination of alien planets is always "similar to Earth but not Earth", and only by retaining the parts similar to Earth can the science fiction imagination have a profound realistic meaning. If we regard "first sight" as a thought experiment, a stone thrown into the silent lake of the universe, perhaps in this "past of the Earth" we are in, it will stir up many possibilities.

Taking Dunhuang culture as its gene, through academic research, exhibition, collection, publication, education, digital transformation and public projects on modern and contemporary art, the museum presents the rich and diverse world of art and thought of mankind; and strives to explore the historical logic of modern Chinese art and the contemporary translation of traditional culture in the knowledge context connecting the classical and the modern, and establish an international art practice and theoretical research platform with China as its venue with an open vision. Dunhuang is not a static concept, but a dynamic process of continuous growth and change. Dunhuang condenses all aspects of human life such as culture, art, politics, history, customs, beliefs, nature, and even different civilizations. In this sense, Dunhuang is a mirror reflecting the world of life. The museum takes Dunhuang as its image and Dunhuang culture and art as its cornerstone, hoping to create a visual field for the dialogue between art and contemporary life on the basis of inheriting the oriental background of Chinese culture. Relying on Dunhuang’s local resources and residency projects, the museum aims to become a gateway connecting the Dunhuang site with the urban art space, breaking down the boundaries between regions, ancient and modern times, and knowledge, observing the present from the perspective of tradition, and forming an art practice and research platform that connects Shanghai, Dunhuang, and the world.
