A Fairer Food Future. Can Wales lead the way? Come join us at the Abergavenny Food Festival Conference for a packed day discussing the future of food in Wales. This is a time of unprecedented crisis of our own making. Wales alone faces an annual bill of £500m to cover the impacts of diabetes and 25% of children are overweight or obese before they start school. Farmers are struggling to keep their businesses viable and we are facing ecological collapse.Food is cheaper than ever before and yet many in our society cannot afford to maintain even a basically healthy diet. Consumption of UPFs continues to rise and there is a leadership vacuum in terms of the national diet. So what can be done? Where are the policy levers than can drive change across the food supply chain to deliver a healthier Britain? And can Wales lead the way, through autonomy in procurement, health policy, farming support and nutritional regulation in schools? Join the debate with a range of industry experts, policy commentators and food producers, to devise a manifesto for change that can deliver a healthier, resilient and fairer food future for Wales. Miller Research is proud to deliver this important event in partnership with Abergavenny Food Festival, the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, the Office of the Future Generations Commissioner and Professor Kevin Morgan. The Creative Drinks in Abergavenny event offers a unique opportunity for artists and craftspeople in Monmouthshire to explore and expand their professional opportunities. This informal networking event specifically targets individuals living or working in the Abergavenny area. Taking place on December 4, 2023, at the prestigious St Mary's Priory Tithe Barn, this gathering aims to map the visual arts scene in Monmouthshire and assess the potential for a Creative Cluster network across the region. By attending, participants will have the chance to engage in an open discussion about creative activities in the Abergavenny area and contribute to the development of a future visual arts network in Monmouthshire. The event will commence with an insightful talk by a local artist, setting the stage for further conversations on business models and best practices. Attendees' invaluable stories and activities will shape the local creative narratives and identities and provide insights into the benefits of a Creative Cluster. This initiative, known as Visual Arts Mapping Monmouthshire (VAMM), falls under the Creative Industries Cluster Hubs project, a collaboration between Cardiff University's Centre for the Creative Economy, Monmouthshire County Council, and supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The ultimate goal of this project is to establish and evaluate three pilot creative industries cluster hubs outside of Cardiff, driving investment and opportunity beyond the boundaries of the city's thriving creative cluster. Admission to the Creative Drinks in Abergavenny event is free, offering artists and craftspeople an exceptional chance to connect, share ideas, and shape the future of the creative industry in Monmouthshire.

Anthropocene Motherhood - Briony Greenhill & Lily Redwood (All welcome ) Contemporary acoustic folk-soul music singer and pianist Briony Greenhill is coming to Abergavenny! Her music is soulful, honest, deep, politically potent original music from the heart, sourced in improvisation. “Greenhill’s jazzy, languid lyrics groove on the healing beauty of song, the planet and your own heart and soul, like Marvin Gaye crossed with a funky Earth mother. This is sensual music that, if you want them, could give extra reasons to live.” Briony Greenhill is “one of the world’s leading proponents of collaborative vocal improvisation (CVI)” - The Guardian. www.brionygreenhill.com Lily Redwood writes about the everyday extraordinary from the political to the poetical. She combines spoken word with tender verse and has recently been a Cheltenham Poetry Festival Slam Finalist and the Bristol Milk Poetry Slam winner. Lily's debut pamphlet, You Make Me Think of Swifts, is out now with The Collective Press. Most of her poems are written on the notes app hiding in the bathroom from her 2 children, or scribbled on the back of a shopping list, whilst burning the dinner. Her work has been described described as: visceral, loving and brave . You can find lily online - @lilyredwoodpoet www.lilyredwood.co.uk CVI is the art of co-creating vocal music in the moment. Here is a short film about Briony’s teaching, which has evolved from the lineage of Rhiannon, Bobby McFerrin, Joey Blake and others. Briony has been teaching CVI for over a decade. She is a founding member of The Well Global Vocal Improvisation Network and the UK Vocal Improvisation Festival. Briony has released 4 entirely improvised albums. Her debut studio album took improvisations and reproduced them adding instrumentation in the studio. Crossing the Ocean featured in The Guardian, Mojo, Radio 3, and Radio 4 Woman’s Hour. Briony teaches vocal musicianship from beginner to advanced levels, while also honouring the spiritual, ritual and therapeutic application of CVI. She is a qualified SomaSource Leader; a “psycho-spiritual educator, artist, activist and healer who has an integrated understanding of how to creatively work in developmentally attuned ways with diverse people throughout life’s cycles.” You can read more about Briony’s teaching values, Vocal Musicianship Trainings, and a history of vocal improvisation in the American tradition here. Briony is now based in South Devon where she lives with her husband and one year old son. Almost all of her teaching happens there now. — Mojo Information Source: wetheuncivilised | eventbrite

An evening of Parisian-flavoured jazz and Gypsy Swing ★ ★ ★ ★ “intelligent, interesting and inventive” THE JAZZ MANN “excellent band…diverse numbers, smart arrangements" JAZZ JOURNAL Swing from Paris are an all-string jazz quartet of violin, guitars and double bass, inspired by the music of the 1930s, ’40s and '50s. Expect stylish jazz and vintage swing , from Benny Goodman, Charlie Christian and Artie Shaw to Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and the master of tango Astor Piazzolla. The group's Parisian-flavoured jazz and gypsy swing has been delighting audiences for over 15 years: from major jazz festivals including the Django Reinhardt Festival at Samois-sur-Seine, to the BBC’s Hairy Bikers and the opening of the award-winning Gloucester Services. Tickets Tickets £18 in advance, £20 on the door. Early bird tickets at £16 Under 18s £ 10 (must be accompanied by an adult) Timings Doors and bar open 7pm . Performance 7.30pm - 9.30pm (including 20min interval) . About the band: Swing from Paris are Tomasz Williams (double bass), Andy Bowen (electric guitar), Fenner Curtis (violin), Sam Hughes (acoustic guitar). They enjoy creating and playing their own arrangements of music they love, mostly inspired by the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s: including music by Gershwin, Piazzolla, Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and the Hot Club of France. They’ve been seen on the BBC’s Hairy Bikers, and have appeared at major jazz festivals including Cheltenham, Brecon and the Django Reinhardt Festival at Samois sur Seine. The band started out of a chance meeting of Andy Bowen and Fenner Curtis, when they both sat in at a Birmingham University jazz club jam session. Already fans of the music of the guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli, they started a group and began playing regularly across their home county of Gloucestershire. Following formative years as a dedicated Django Reinhardt ensemble, they widened their repertoire to include many other greats of the era and beyond – and welcomed members Sam Hughes on guitar and Tomasz Williams on double bass in the late 2010s. Their latest recording together is I Love Paris (2024), available on vinyl, CD and digital. Listen On Spotify or visit swingfromparis.co.uk Find social links and mailing list via linktr.ee/swingfromparis Audience comments: "Absolutely wonderful" "A truly spectacular and accomplished group” “Fabulous musicians, fabulous arrangements. Can't recommend enough!” “Highly recommended.
