Join the captivating conversation on body and spirit at the upcoming event, "Open Forms: Conversations in Contemporary Clay". Organized by Pasadena City College, this enlightening lecture and discussion will feature renowned artist Ashwini Bhat and esteemed art historian Jenni Sorkin. The event will take place on December 1, 2023, at the Pasadena City College - C 333 venue.
With over thirty-five years of experience, Ashwini Bhat has transitioned from living and creating in Southern India to the serene foothills of Sonoma Mountain, California. Drawing from her background in literature and classical Indian dance, Bhat utilizes various mediums such as sculptures, installations, videos, and text to explore the intersection between the human body and the natural world. Inspired by her rural agrarian upbringing, her work is deeply influenced by syncretic shrines, rituals, and non-Western concepts of empathy towards the non-human. Bhat's artistic practice also aims to (re)map consciousness, contributing to a spiritual and psychological archive while emphasizing the transformative power of place.
Jenni Sorkin, a distinguished Professor of History of Art & Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, specializes in the study of gender, material culture, and contemporary art. With a focus on women artists and underrepresented media, Sorkin has published notable books such as "Live Form: Women, Ceramics and Community" and "Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women Artists, 1947–2016". Her expertise and research contribute valuable insights into the vibrant world of contemporary clay.
Don't miss out on this extraordinary opportunity to delve into the profound connections between art, spirituality, and culture. Admission to the event is free, allowing all art enthusiasts and seekers of knowledge to engage in this thought-provoking discourse. Mark your calendars for December 1, 2023, and join us at the Pasadena City College - C 333 venue for an enriching experience.
