Book Presentation: "The Legend of Busby" by Vittoria Pasquini | Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney

Feb 20, 2025 (UTC+10)
York
Arts
Literary Arts
The Italian Cultural Institute of Sydney is pleased to host the presentation of The Legend of Busby, a touching memoir written by Vittoria Pasquini, an Italian professor at the Australian National University in Canberra. The book tells the story of a special house, a “sandcastle” on the hill of Bronte, overlooking Sydney’s sea. Through the imagined gaze of the house itself, the author retraces the most significant moments of her life and the lives of the people who lived there. These pages reveal the pain of losing her husband and son Valerio, who tragically died in a car accident in Malawi, but also the strength of a woman who found new hope in family bonds, friendships and her commitment to others. Among the memories shared, the house becomes a silent witness to events ranging from the most dramatic, such as the challenges of a family marked by grief, to the joys shared with friends, and acts of solidarity toward those most vulnerable. The story intertwines with memories of her family home in Italy and the author’s experiences in distant places like Kenya, the United States, and Algeria, offering a glimpse into a life filled with challenges, but also extraordinary beauty. After the loss of Valerio, Vittoria founded the Valerio Daniel De Simoni Association, which keeps the memory of her son alive through concrete acts of help for the most fragile, including refugees. This presentation will be a unique opportunity to hear the stories that animate the book directly from the author’s voice and reflect on the strength of memory, family bonds, and solidarity. The presentation will be in English. Information Source: Istituto Italiano di Cultura | eventbrite

While Thor thunders, Loki schemes, and giants blunder about, there are darker things abroad in the lands of the north: the men who change their form and become wolves when the battle frenzy strikes, avenging shieldmaidens, gods who work the Midgard lands, and the Darugr dead that leave their barrow mounds to hunt the living. Told in the traditional way, for modern audiences, by award-winning performance storyteller Jason Buck, this collections of Viking legends breaks open the lid of stranger and more sinister tales from the heroes and villains of the ancient north. Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30pm start. Age: Adult and teens (18+ due to licensing and content) Jason Buck is a man made of myth, magic and mead. His stories are filled with adventure, his beard is full of unexpected twists and his tankard filled with a poet's brew. Sit around the fire and listen to his tales - you won't be disappointed. An Evening with Adam Farrer - Waterstones York | Waterstones

Literary Arts
We're celebraiting the launch of Adam Farrer's beautiful new book Broken Biscuits, chaired by Kathryn Tann (Seaglass). Join us for what promises to be an excellent evening out in York, 25th February 7pm Broken Biscuits: When it comes to the challenge of being a man, Adam Farrer always seems to find a way to fall short… Broken Biscuits vividly recounts Adam’s struggles to live up to masculine expectations, real or imagined. From the calamity of his first serious relationship to an obsession with Prince that sees everyone questioning his sexuality, and from the repercussions of his adult circumcision to his doubts about his ability to survive the apocalypse, this candid and personal collection of essays is astonishingly far-reaching and riotously funny. Holding up a mirror to Adam’s own body image, his relationship with his family, his sense of self-worth and the mortifying experience of arriving at a teenage party wearing strawberry-patterned short shorts, this book is about growing up and trying to define yourself as a man but somehow always missing the mark. Kathryn Tann (Seaglass) On a windswept stretch of the Durham coastline, there’s treasure to be found: jewels of shining sea glass, swept in by the tide after years at sea. Gathered together in a jar on the windowsill, each seaworn pebble is a moment in time, a glinting archive of unknowable lives. Seaglass is a collection of such moments; essays blending creative non-fiction with nature writing and memoir, and portraying with powerful observation and moving honesty the journey of a young woman navigating modern adulthood. The stories draw a map of Kathryn’s life, from Manchester to the South Wales coastline and out to the Thousand Islands in Canada’s Saint Lawrence River. Traversing wilderness, natural history, travel and water – rivers, lakes, coastlines and leisure centres –Seaglass explores shared experiences, anxieties, confidence and contentment. Ticketing: General Admission: £6 Book and Ticket: £19 There will be a signing after the event. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

The Garden by Nick Newman In a place and time unknown, two elderly sisters live in a walled garden, secluded from the outside world. For as long as they can remember, Evelyn and Lily have only had each other. What was before the garden, they have forgotten; what lies beyond it, they do not know. Each day is spent in languid service to their home: tending the bees, planting the crops, and dutifully following the instructions of the almanac written by their mother. So, when a nameless boy is found hiding in the boarded house at the centre of this new Eden, the reality of their existence is irrevocably shattered. Who is he? And where did he come from? Taking place at Waterstones York 19.00 – 20.30 The event includes a talk led by the author, Nick Newman, followed by a Q&A and a small drinks reception and signing event at the end of the evening. Entry is £5 Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite
