A lake with mysterious properties. A town haunted by urban legend. Two women whose lives intersect in terrifying ways. Welcome to Soap Lake, a town to rival Twin Peaks and Stephen King’s Castle Rock. When Abigail agreed to move to Soap Lake, Washington for her husband’s research she expected old growth forests and craft beer, folksy neighbors and the World’s Largest Lava Lamp. Instead, after her husband jets off to Poland for a research trip, she finds herself alone, in a town surrounded by desert, and haunted by its own urban legends. But when a young boy runs through the desert into Abigail’s arms, her life becomes entwined with his and the questions surrounding his mother Esme’s death. In Abigail’s search for answers she enlists the help of a recovering addict-turned-librarian, a grieving brother, a broken motel owner, and a mentally-shattered conspiracy theorist to unearth Esme’s tragic past, the town’s violent history, and the secret magic locked in the lake her husband was sent there to study. As she gets closer to the answers, past and present crimes begin to collide, and Abigail finds herself gaining the unwelcome attention of the town’s unofficial mascot, the rubber-suited orchard stalker known as TreeTop, a specter who seems to be lurking in every dark shadow and around every shady corner. A sweeping, decade-spanning mystery brimming with quirky characters, and puzzle hunt scenarios, Midnight in Soap Lake is a modern day Twin Peaks—a rich, expansive universe that readers will enter and never forget. "Suki Seokyeong Kang: Mountain-Hour-Face" Curator Tour with Miranda Lash | Museum of Contemporary Art Denver
Apr 24, 2025 (UTC-7)
Denver
Join us on Thursday, April 3 for a curator-led tour of MCA Denver's spring exhibition, Suki Seokyeong Kang: Mountain⎯Hour⎯Face, on view February 21– May 4, 2025. The exhibition is co-curated by Ellen Bruss Senior Curator, Miranda Lash, and Associate Curator, Leilani Lynch, and features a wide array of works Suki Seokyeong Kang has developed over the past several years. Showcasing Kang’s deft use of materials—from hwamunseoks (traditionally woven grass mats), dyed wool, and mulberry paper, to industrial materials like steel and brass—to create wondrous and spiritual objects and installations, the exhibition brings the artist’s vision of the landscape into three dimensions. About the Curator Miranda Lash is the Ellen Bruss Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and the co-Artistic Director for the sixth iteration of the international art triennial Prospect New Orleans. Lash has organized a wide range of exhibitions including Eamon Ore-Giron: Competing with Lightning/ Rivalizando con el relámpago; Jason Moran: Bathing the Room with Blues; the retrospective Mel Chin: Rematch; Rashaad Newsome: King of Arms; and Swoon: Thalassa. In 2017, Lash and Trevor Schoonmaker co-organized the widely acclaimed exhibition Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art. From 2008 to 2014 Lash was the founding curator of modern and contemporary art at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Lash currently serves as Vice President on the board of the Joan Mitchell Foundation. She holds art history degrees from Harvard University (B.A.), and the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art (M.A.) About the Exhibiting Artist Suki Seokyeong Kang’s (b. 1977, Seoul; lives and works in Seoul) research-driven practice spans across media, incorporating sculpture, painting, video, installation, and performance, as she investigates the notion of space and its relationship to an individual’s social position within society. Kang appropriates the formal language of the grid used in traditional Korean musical notation as a spatial and social structuring device. The grid is translated and reproduced as standing formations in her works that balance against, hinge on, and even protrude from the wall. In her works, the sculptures in the space appear and are further activated in her videos or performances. Hwamunseok—mats used in traditional Korean court dances—produced from woven sedge by Korean craftswomen. Each of these signals the minimum space an individual is provided in society. As these notations multiply, Kang configures them into a rich visual score suggesting the possibility of a collective consciousness rooted in individual action. Kang received an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London (2012) and an MFA and a BFA in Oriental Painting at Ewha Womans University, Seoul (2002, 2000). Solo exhibitions have been held at Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul (2023); Musée d'Art Contemporain du Luxembourg (2019); Seoul Museum of Art (2019); Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2018); Audiovisual Pavilion, Seoul (2015); and Gallery Factory, Seoul (2013). Selected group exhibitions have been held at 58th Venice Biennale (2019); 10th Liverpool Biennial (2018); 12th Shanghai Biennale (2018); 12th and 10th Gwangju Biennale (2018, 2016); Bloomberg New Contemporaries, London (2012); MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles (2018); Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (2017); Villa Vassilieff, Paris (2016); and Seoul Museum of Art (2014). Kang is a recipient of Baloise Art Prize (2018) and Songeun Art Award (2013).

Join us as we celebrate National Poetry Month with feminist poets at Denver Union Stationon Saturday, April 26th at 3:00 PM! We will have additional books for guests to purchase in store! ABOUT THE BOOK FEATURED AND POETS
Though Constance E. Boyle, Brooke Granville, Petra Perkins and Gail Waldstein have different faces, personalities, and life experiences, they all share qualities implied by the name, Eve, a word with roots in life and breath. They have worked together as poets for many years, each distilling her own life experiences and helping the others to hone poems which pay tribute to resilience, love, survival and spirit in a world where abuse, betrayal, death and grief are also deeply rooted. Constance E. Boyle is a lifelong creative writer with an MFA from Goddard. She spent most of her career working at Denver Health as a physician assistant in pediatric and adolescent medicine. Along the way, she facilitated an improv theater for youth and published prize-winning poetry. Her seventeen poems in The Faces of Eve recreate the terrifying experience of a child whose abuser approaches ( attic ), the wry self-assertion of a woman who rejects sexism ( dance 101 ). Her Eve accepts her own bipolar disorder ( I'll tell you bipolar ); she dances, kayaks, grieves the death of her mother, watches in bemused delight as her children grow ( mom, you'll love this ). Brooke Granville's path begins with family tangles. Adopted as an infant by a couple who afterwards divorced, she was part of three families ... before was five. After her own early divorce, she spent her career in real estate. She began writing poetry largely as a way of engaging with specific traumas: spousal abuse, divorce and its after-effects. But her Eve's scope is broad; her twenty-two poems come from decades full of challenges, sometimes met with hesitation, often with success, always with memorable images. Granville writes with clear love about her children, with hope about her second marriage, with unforgettable understatement about her son's suicide ( my son's chair and the oh of suicide ), and with gentle spirit about eventually finding her birth mother and a newly extended family. Petra Perkins, with degrees in Computer Engineering, Aerospace Management, and Creative Writing, is probably the most widely published in this talented foursome, with poems, stories, and essays in The Huffington Post, The Colorado Independent, Rumpus, and even The New York Times. She wrote for Crone Magazine for several years and, with her race-car-driving husband, co-authored Full Circle: A Hands-On Affair with the First Ferarri 250 GTO. Her sixteen poems in The Four Faces of Eve are often filled with laughter. One hears it as she imitates a sexist male ( The Interview ) or remembers a tasty affair ( Chili in Winter ). Her Eve has known abuse ( In the Closet ) and lost loved ones ( Here and Away ). Yet empathy is the deepest quality in Perkins' poems, empathy which enables the poet to become other selves, to see that some need solace/ faith magic/ or/ hope ( Celestial ). Gail Waldstein's experiences with Eve (life's breath) are complex and unique. The first three of her eighteen poems recreate her Eve's breath-stopping fear of a sexually abusive Daddy. Other poems place her own children--supple and fragile--within a failing marriage, herself deposited in a mental institution. Others speak to her survival and that of her children ( aurora ), But it's poems about her work as a pediatric pathologist that most fully immerse readers in a world where pain feels universal and grief inevitable ( prayer for the light baby ). Waldstein's poetry refuses to simplify or romanticize. Taken together, Boyle, Granville, Perkins and Waldstein give their women readers memorable tributes to (1) shared pain; (2) complicated love; (3) motherhood; (4) resilience; (5) grief; and (6) an enduring and empathetic spirit.
