On this special walk we will uncover some of the mind-boggling historical delicacies eaten in York - especially at royal and religious feasts - as well as the foodstuffs upon which the city grew rich. We'll also dig (metaphorically) into the filth beneath our feet that has enabled archaeologists to work out the diets of long-gone residents. There will be porpoises and poo, dozens of oxen, and a startling quantity of roast birds, wine and fish. We'll explore Roman menus, Viking dining, and medieval royal weddings. And we'll finish our forage with the story of the reverend-professor who made it his mission to eat everything! Starting on Piccadilly, outside the gates of the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, we'll walk via Pavement, the Shambles, King's Square and York Minster to finish outside the Yorkshire Museum. The walk will take 60-90 minutes and is suitable for people aged 11 and over. Information Source: York's Hidden History | eventbrite

The war is over. Holdfast is dead. The Eternal Flame extinguished. There’s no one left for you to save.” Once a promising alchemist, Helena Marino is now a prisoner—of war and of her own mind. Her Resistance friends and allies have been brutally murdered, her abilities suppressed, and the world she knew destroyed. In the aftermath of a long war, Paladia’s new ruling class of corrupt guild families and depraved necromancers, whose vile undead creatures helped bring about their victory, holds Helena captive. According to Resistance records, she was a healer of little importance within their ranks. But Helena has inexplicable memory loss of the months leading up to her capture, making her enemies wonder: Is she truly as insignificant as she appears, or are her lost memories hiding some vital piece of the Resistance’s final gambit? To uncover the memories buried deep within her mind, Helena is sent to the High Reeve, one of the most powerful and ruthless necromancers in this new world. Trapped on his crumbling estate, Helena’s fight—to protect her lost history and to preserve the last remaining shreds of her former self—is just beginning. For her prison and captor have secrets of their own . . . secrets Helena must unearth, whatever the cost. About SenLinYu : SenLinYu grew up in the Pacific Northwest and studied classical liberal arts and culture. They started writing in the Notes app of their phone during their baby’s nap time. Their collected online works have garnered more than twenty million individual downloads and have been translated into twenty-three languages. They live in Portland, Oregon, with their family. Waterstones York are excited to announce an evening with Phoenicia Rogerson the author behind the brilliant Herc on 25th September, 7pm.Our event will consist of a talk given by the author followed by an opportunity to ask questions of Phoenicia's process, character development, her own reading choices and much more! About the book: Aphrodite 'I’m a liar, to begin with.' I wasn’t always a goddess, you see. My only real power was my beauty – you’ll have heard. It’s legendary. But that was never going to be enough for me. It took a web of lies to convince the gods of Olympus I was one of them. But I did. I was that good. Zeus gave me a title and riches and loved me. And all he wanted in return was for me to love him back. But of course, Zeus was a tyrant. (Not entirely surprising when you’re ninety per cent insecurities and ten per cent raw power.) I couldn’t live at someone’s mercy. Really, I had no choice. I had to take on the mightiest Olympian of all. And this bit’s not a lie… I intended to win. Accessing our shop: Doors open from 18.45 and the event begins at 19.00 Ticketing: £6 General Admission £4 Waterstones Plus Card Holders £20 Book and Ticket. Accessibility : We have two in store bathrooms, with baby changing facilities on the first floor.A customer lift.Parking is restricted, however, cars can access Coney Street from 18.00 for collection and drop off outside of our store.
