We are delighted to invite you to join us at the City Art Centre for a presentation with the Tape Letters Scotland project director Wajid Yaseen & co-ordinator Syma Ahmed. The event is free to attend. Food and drinks will be provided. We will then travel to the Museum of Edinburgh for a private view of the exhibition before it opens to the public. Tape Letters Scotland is a social history project that highlights the practice within the Scottish-Pakistani community of recording and sending voice messages on cassette tape between the 1960s-1980s. The exhibition platforms the stories uncovered from cassette tapes and interviews from Edinburgh’s Pakistani community. We are looking forward to welcoming Sam Horton along to the shop on Thursday 3rd October at 7pm as he discusses his luscious dark fantasy debut of faith, Cornish folklore and grief, Gorse, with Hannah Kaner. Cornwall, 1786. For years, the villagers of Mirecoombe have turned to their Keeper, the old and battle-scarred Lord Pelagius Hunt, mediator between the worlds of men and fey, for help. But this is a time of change. Belief in the old ways, in the piskies and spriggans, has dimmed, kindled instead in the Reverend Cleaver’s fiery pulpit. His church stands proud above the mire; God’s name is whispered, hushed, loved. And now, death stalks Mirecoombe on the moor. There are corpses in the heather. There is blood in the gorse. Nancy Bligh is determined to do what Pel will not: maintain the balance between the fey and the human world, be the Keeper that he refuses to be. Blessed with natural sight, friend to spriggans, piskies and human locals of Mirecoombe, Nancy has power that Pel never had and never lets her use. But as Mirecoombe falls into darkness, perhaps her time has come. A poignant and lyrical examination of faith, love and grief, Gorse asks what do we choose to believe, and how does that shape who we are? Sam K. Horton lives above the moor in Cornwall, drawing on its wild landscape, wide skies and windblown folklore for his work. He trained as a costume designer before moving into visual art. WSSA - SKI TECHNIQUE LAB UK TOUR 2023 Formulated over 20 years by working with thousands of skiers, the Warren Smith Ski Academy has developed an off-snow skiing system involving a series of simple screening tests measuring specific movement patterns and key actions to perform the sport efficiently. This formula helps to make a skier biomechanically sound, reduces the risk of injury, and makes for faster development when on skis. These programs will educate people on how the 3 Way Lineage works for skiers of all levels to improve themselves. SKI TECHNIQUE - How our body can move to get the best out of the equipment. BIOMECHANICS - How our body can move in its best and most efficient way to maximize technique. EQUIPMENT - This can help or hinder our chances of achieving the best results in any given terrain. All attendees will be assessed in the Ski Technique Lab’s 6 Way Foundation tests focusing on Mobility, Stability, and Flexibility drills. You’ll be left with enough data and knowledge to build your own technique development program off snow and dramatically change your skiing before the winter season starts. THE 6 WAY FOUNDATION TESTS ANKLE FLEX RANGE. By taking a measurement of how far each person's ankle allows them to flex, we can tell early on if the simple mechanics of the sport will work or not. The ideal test range for safe skiing is between 10 and 15cm with equal range on the right and left ankle. Many skiers taking the test don’t meet the range needed and also show a difference between left and right. SKIER SYMMETRY Symmetry describes how skiers manage their width of stance from the feet up to their hips and maintain a consistently symmetrical position. To test this range we use our simple 10-second test, where attendees try to pull their feet together on a slippery surface in a slow controlled movement without their knees dropping in. A weakness in this range is usually evident with most skiers and training is needed to get to the 10 second goal. LEG STEERING RANGE This describes the ability to inwardly rotate the outside leg of a ski turn. So, if you are turning left, it would be your inward rotation of the right leg which is measured, showing how effectively the ball is rotating inside the socket joint of the hip. Most people show a difference between left and right and many people show blockages on one side that directly effects their turns in one direction. Learning the correct action and understanding how to activate the outside leg is essential to achieving edge grip and pressure during your turns. Most people don’t ski with the available range they have and also have a difference between left and right. This test highlights this and shows how to develop quality in stability and mobility. LEG FLEXION EXTENTION Learning the correct action and understanding how to activate the outside leg is essential to achieving edge grip and pressure during your turns. BODY ANGULATION Learning how to move laterally and create angles in the body is a key factor in skiing and a movement range that many people struggle with, especially on one side of the body. This test identifies your limitation and also the difference between left and right. It also gives you a chance to learn to move in this axis in a controlled manner with your hips in the best position for your individual physiology. CORE STABILITY Creating awareness of core strength and how to keep it activated whilst skiing helps deal with the pressure that skiing puts through the middle of your body. You’ll be tested on a LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH core stability rating based on how you perform on the test. Exercises are covered on how to develop this area. The simple fact is, specific movement ranges are required for skiing. Our findings demonstrate that the majority of skiers go to the mountains without these required ranges, especially when you compare the left and right sides of the body. If the range isn't there off snow, then it certainly won't be there on snow! THE SKI TECHNIQUE LAB allows you to understand these ranges and gives you a clear direction for development and success with specific mobility, stability, and flexibility exercises. THE EXPERT PROGRAM CERTIFICATION The Expert Program Certification offers Ski Retailers, Personal Trainers, Physios, and Ski Industry Workers the chance to learn how to deliver and assess skiers through the Ski Technique Lab process. This will include further education on the 3 Way Lineage and 6 Way Foundation tests. Successful students will receive a SKI TECHNIQUE LAB – EXPERT PROGRAM CERTIFICATE and will be able to pass on the knowledge and test skiers themselves. At the Ski Technique Lab, we hope to educate people to go away and build these ranges and use additional movement-based drills to create a solid physical platform ahead of the coming winter season. Artificial intelligence is advancing at an ever-increasing rate, prompting questions about how these developments will impact all aspects of our society, learning, and the arts. She is designed as a platform for AI and human-robot interaction research, demonstrating the latest advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence. Join Surgeons Hall Museums Human Remains Conservator Cat Irving for this adult only, hands-on workshop, exploring the history of anatomical casting. Anatomical models have been used since the eighteenth century to teach about normal anatomy and disease, and often these were made using casts from dissected cadavers. This workshop with human remains conservator Cat Irving will allow you to try out the process of casting a lamb’s heart using plaster or wax, which you will be able take home afterwards, while learning about the history of these models and their role in Surgeons’ Hall’s Collection. About the eventA selection of traditional music and song gives a starting point for a series of improvisations performed by Traditional Artist in Residence at the University of Edinburgh, Fraser Fifield, using low whistle and looping pedals. Fraser Fifield has developed a unique approach to playing low whistle through years of collaboration with a diverse set of musicians and musical styles. The low whistle is a simply constructed extension of the humble tin whistle, and has become increasingly popular since the late 1970s, with pipers and flute players in Irish and Scottish traditional music using the instrument most often. For Fraser, it has been a central musical voice through his 11 albums, and a link between worlds of ‘jazz’ and ‘folk’. Fraser FifieldFraser Fifield is a multi-instrumentalist and composer from Scotland, performing on low whistle, saxophone, and bagpipes. His distinctive instrumental voice draws influence from many sources; Scottish folk is identifiably present but also Jazz, Indian, Balkan and more. He currently holds the post of Traditional Artist in Residence at the University of Edinburgh. Over a 30-year career, Fraser has performed with many influential bands from the Scottish folk scene and released a series of acclaimed solo recordings. His most recent, ‘One Great Circle’, refers to the legacy of Traveller Stanley Robertson, and features Chris Stout and Catriona McKay. The creative residency will centre on McGregor’s AI.Soma – a world’s first, machine learning choreographic tool developed specifically for McGregor with Google Arts and Culture Lab. During the residency, 12 students from a range of dance backgrounds studying on MSc Dance Science & Education programme at Moray House School of Education and Sport, will be introduced to the AI tool, learn excerpts of McGregor’s AI repertory and use AI.Soma to develop their own choreographic material, which Studio Wayne McGregor artists will then develop into a 20 minute public sharing performed by the dance artists. This Residency offers an opportunity for the Participants to gain exclusive insight into McGregor’s artistic process, and the creative process of his closest collaborators, Company Wayne McGregor. Studio Wayne McGregor has developed a consummate reputation for transformative approaches to how dance is taught, learned, and spoken about. Originally from New Zealand, Rebecca Bassett-Graham trained as a contemporary major at the New Zealand School of Dance. After graduating in 2011, she joined New Zealand Dance Company as an inaugural intern before moving to Townsville, Australia to work with DanceNorth. Rebecca freelanced between New Zealand and Australia working with various choreographers including Ross McCormack and Sarah Foster-Sproull. She moved to London in 2013 and continued to work as a freelance dancer across the UK and Europe. Rebecca joined Company Wayne McGregor in 2017. Chris Lyons is a composer, pianist and multi-instrumentalist. He is active in classical, folk and jazz music. He recently soundtracked his first full-length feature film and he is much in demand as an arranger and orchestrator. He has founded some of Scotland's most unusual bands: 8 piece Celtic-Balkan festival favourites Blue Giant Orkestar and the 9 piece contemporary vocal folk ensemble Samodiva Nestya. He also plays violin in the ensemble Hegedu. In the field of music technology, he has been quite active in the live coding scene. Chris is known for playing an unusually large number of instruments and he is held in high regard as a music educator. He is a founder of 'Leith New Music', the world's most informal art-music event. Esther Inglis (1570-1624) was a uniquely important writer and artist. A refugee from religious persecution, she and her family left France to settle in Edinburgh during her childhood. Here she acquired the skills in calligraphy, drawing, and embroidery that combined to create the extraordinary manuscript books for which she is still famed. In her own day, she was known to be one of the finest calligraphers then working, sometimes called the 'mistress of the golden pen'. Join us at St Cecilia’s Hall to celebrate the quatercentenary anniversary of Esther Inglis’ death with a concert inspired by Inglis’ life and work. The programme will feature polyphonic settings of French poetic texts of which Esther Inglis copied into her exquisite manuscripts: Antoine de Chandieu’s Octonaires sur la vanité et inconstance du monde, and the Quatrains du sieur de Pybrac. The programme will also include Sheena Phillips’ original settings of poetic works by and for Esther Inglis: Un Petit Pseautier and Gerda Stevenson’s Nine Haiku for Esther Inglis. Join us to explore and reimagine how we want society to view ageing and older age. May is 75 and disgusted about the stereotypes of ageing and older people she sees around her. When an opportunity comes to be part of a documentary about ageing, she jumps at the chance to tell a different story of hope and thriving. However, it soon becomes clear that the documentary makers already have a narrative in mind: one of problems, hardship and despair. Can May convince them to change this narrative, or is it too strong for her to challenge? The Truth About Ageing explores how we can reframe ageing and older age from being seen as a problem to be dealt with to an opportunity to thrive. It is a follow-up to the Reimagining the Future in Older Age Project at the University of Stirling, exploring older age and the future. The play uses Forum Theatre, a type of theatre which enables an audience to intervene and change the action, reimagining how we want society to view ageing and older age.
