Featuring works from as early as 1977 to present day, this exhibition celebrates the artist’s practice as a printmaker and honors her legacy as an active member of the South Florida art community. From the Heights contemplates the role played by art collectives, explores the importance of archiving an artist’s oeuvre, and enlightens issues of race, gender, and class as it relates to history writing. ARt Connecting Communities: A Night of Film, ARt, Virtual Reality, and ConversationMiami MoCAAD will host a screening of the documentary and virtual reality art exhibition, ARt Connecting Communities: Overtown and Coral Gables, on Monday, December 2, 2024, from 7 PM to 10 PM at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater. The evening will feature replicas of interactive murals, oral history QR codes, music, refreshments, and opportunities to mix and mingle. This kickoff collaboration with the Historic Lyric Theater and MUCE Miami is made possible by the Southeast Overtown / Park West CRA, with support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor, the Board of County Commissioners, and the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Art of Black. Highlights of this unforgettable evening include a screening of the documentary ARt Connecting Communities: Overtown and Coral Gables, directed by Michael Anderson, 5x Regional Emmy Award Winner, which will spotlight Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, Founder of the Black Archives, who reveals deep historical ties between these two influential Miami neighborhoods. A moderated conversation by Miami MoCAAD co-founder Marilyn Holifield will feature acclaimed artist Stefan Smith and Dr. Fields. Stefan Smith, the visionary behind the mural Overtown Pitch: Game Changers, which honors soccer players from the African Diaspora and the coming of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to Miami, will discuss his creative process. The ARt Connecting Communities Virtual Reality Exhibition, available for viewing through VR headsets in the Lyric Theater Plaza, will showcase works by French Caribbean artist Marielle Plaisir. A centerpiece of the evening will be Miami MoCAAD’s Interactive Oral History Mural Exhibition, showcasing enlarged replicas of murals by artists Anthony Renelle Mojo Reed II, Reginald O'Neal, and Stefan Smith, complete with QR codes that link to rich oral histories, including contributions of Miami’s first Black, Judge Lawson E Thomas, International Longshoremen Association Local 1416, and Overtown's crucial role in Miami's development.
