Maker Talks are the exploration into the interplay between inspiration, innovation, creativity and the act of making–and how technology intertwines, empowering makers with insights and capabilities that serve as a catalyst for making. Join us for presentations and conversations with a diverse selection of makers to more deeply understand their unique process of creating–involving design, nature, community, experimental materials and processes which bring their ideas to the fore.
Johnanna Grawunder's large-scale, international public lighting, color and glass installations and exhibition designs are only one aspect of her diverse scale and body of work. Johanna will talk with us about the complex process of design, making and installation of her work which spans decades and continents with her complex installations, lighting design, interiors, furniture and unique commissioned pieces, Johanna’s creative spark is ignited by an initial design brief and supported with deep collaboration. Her storytelling and object making is layered in the physics of light and technology–resulting in work that blurs the line between art and design to profoundly shape the viewers perception and experience of color. Moderator Lise de Vito, Owner, Zack | de Vito Architecture + Construction Lise de Vito has an established design career spanning 25 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her architecture work demonstrates innovation in client based residential and commercial projects as well as vertically integrated residential design/build/development projects. Her own creative drive is deeply influenced by a family legacy steeped in architecture, industrial and graphic design as well as fine art. Lise de Vito’s role as the creator and moderator of the Center for Architecture + Design Maker Talk is to facilitate in-depth conversations with a diverse range of makers to share their intricate process and craft with the overall design and architecture community, as well as the broader public. Presenter Johanna Grawunder With a broad and versatile design ability that shows no bias to genre or category designer/artist Johanna Grawunder works on a broad range of projects including large-scale, international public lighting and color installations, architectural interventions, exhibition design, furniture and product design as well as private bespoke commissions. Trained as an architect, her work is highly collaborative and incorporates architectural principles as well as the “language” of high technology light research . As a partner at Sottsass Associati Milan (1985-2001), she co-designed with Ettore Sottsass, many of the firm’s architecture projects. In 2001 she opened her own design studio in San Francisco and Milan. Johanna’s award winning work is included in the permanent collections of LACMA, SFMOMA, Fine Arts Museum Houston, the Art Institute of Chicago, High Museum Atlanta, and MAD in Paris. Learning Objectives (1.5 LUs) Learn how the medium of light shapes space, color, material and user perception to inform the design process and the outcome of architecture and design productsLearn how varying and complex digital technologies integrally support and inform the design, fabrication and installation of experimental projects–in both small and monumental scale projects in domestic US and internationallyLearn how different and complex structural engineering enables the fabricating and installation of large scale projectsLearn how important collaboration with clients and consultants across multiple industries informs end design outcomes
