EVENT OVERVIEW:Critically Acclaimed, New York Times Bestselling author, Ariel Lawhon will discuss her immensely popular historical novel, The Frozen Riveron Monday, November 11, 2024 at 7:00 PM at Unity Temple on the Plaza. ABOUT THE BOOK: Frozen River Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own. Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie. Deborah Treisman and Anne Doran—The Dream Colony: A Life in Art | 192 Books

New York
Arts
Fine Art
Walter Hopps—The Dream Colony: A Life in Art (Bloomsbury, 2024) An innovative, iconoclastic curator of contemporary art, Walter Hopps founded his first gallery at the age of 21. At 24, he opened the Ferus Gallery with then-unknown artist Edward Kienholz. Ferus turned the spotlight on a new generation of West Coast artists, premiered Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, and was at one point shut down by the LA vice squad for a show of Wallace Berman's edgy art. In the sixties, Hopps mounted the first museum retrospectives of Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Cornell and the first museum exhibition of Pop Art—before it was even known as Pop Art. When Hopps became the director of Washington's Corcoran Gallery of Art at age 34, the New York Times hailed him as “the most gifted museum man on the West Coast (and, in the field of contemporary art, possibly in the nation).” A few years before his death in 2005, Hopps began work on this book, a vivid, personal, surprising, irreverent, and enlightening account of his life and of some of the greatest artistic minds of the twentieth century. Deborah Treisman has been the fiction editor of the New Yorker since 2003, and is the host of the award-winning The New Yorker: Fiction podcast. She was formerly the managing editor of the art and literary quarterly Grand Street, for which Walter Hopps was the art editor. She is also the editor of the book 20 Under 40: Stories from The New Yorker. Anne Doran is an artist and a writer and editor for the visual arts. She has written for Artforum, Art in America, ARTnews, Mousse, Collector Daily, Time Out New York, and Tricycle: The Buddhist Review. From 1996 to 2004, she was an editor at the art and literary quarterly Grand Street. David Salle helped define the post-modern sensibility by combining figuration with an extremely varied pictorial language. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at museums and galleries worldwide, and Salle's paintings are in the permanent collections of major museums throughout America as well as Europe and Asia. Although known primarily as a painter, Salle's work grows out of a long-standing involvement with performance. Over the last 35 years, he has worked with choreographer Karole Armitage, creating sets and costumes for many of her ballets and opera productions. In addition, Salle is a prolific writer on art. He is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books, and his collection of essays, How to See: Looking, Talking, and Thinking about Art, was published by W.W. Norton in 2016. This event will take place in person at192Booksat19210th Ave. Seating is limited. The discussion will also be streamed directly onPCG Studio at 7:00 PM ET. There is no login required. Brooklyn Backs Brooklyn ~ Mother Design & Brooklyn Org | John L. Tishman Auditorium, The New School

If Brooklyn were its own city, it would be the third largest in the United States. And yet, when Brooklyn Community Foundation launched in 2009, Brooklyn nonprofits received just 2% of all NYC foundation funding. Since then, Brooklyn Community Foundation has moved over $100 million to Brooklyn nonprofits. But Brooklyn deserved more. After nearly 15 years, the foundation understood that to truly make a difference in the status quo, they would need to make a dramatic shift. It was time the brand felt as big as its ambition—that it became an institution as iconic and inclusive as Brooklyn itself. So Mother New York and Mother Design developed a strategy to distance the organization from notions of traditional philanthropy, seen largely today as elitist, dysfunctional, and detached. Brooklyn Community Foundation should be reborn not only in look and feel, we posited, but in name: Brooklyn Org would be the champion for Brooklyn, the new model for community philanthropy, and the destination for all who care. Join Kozue Yamada, Brian Reid, JP Napleton, and Gonzalo Donoso for a behind-the-scenes look at the reimagining of Brooklyn.org. Information Source: AIGA NY | eventbrite

In lyric experiment and searing insight, Trish Salah locates the subject in a minefield of dispossession, and thinks in often discomfiting ways about how a poetics of gender liberation might meaningfully expand the projects of anti-racist and anti-colonial social transformation. Lou Cornum thinks through disaster and utopia, making sense of accumulated forms of consciousness across centuries of struggle to illuminate how an unlivable world could be made otherwise. Join us for a conversation between artist Adrienne Elise Tarverand Jenée-Daria Strand, Assistant Curator at Public Art Fund. The discussion will delve into the inspiration and references in Tarver’s Public Art Fund exhibition She who sits, now on view on JCDecaux bus shelters in New York City, Chicago, and Boston. They will discuss the work’s cultural connections historically and presently, and connect the works in the exhibition to other chapters of Tarver’s artistic practice. She who sits is Tarver’s first solo public art exhibition and features six new works that continue her exploration of the centrality of the Black matriarch. Each subject is seated in an intimate environment and each painting is inspired by the artist’s personal archive as well as media archives–especially that of Ebony Magazine, a cornerstone of culture, news, and entertainment. Tarver’s imagery positions the act of sitting as a reclamation of rest and power. Attend in person at The Cooper Union. Registration is required, and capacity is limited. Seating is first come, first served, so please arrive early. Your registration does not guarantee a seat. Doors will close at 6:45pm. Accessibility: Email Gabriela López Dena, Associate Curator of Public Practice, at glopez@publicartfund.org with questions and requests for accessibility. Help us build out the vision of next year's leaders. ABOUT THE BOOK From standup comedian Youngmi Mayer, an unforgettable memoir written with “raw, enviable freedom that simply floors you,” interrogating whiteness, gender, and sexuality in America, navigating a tumultuous childhood in Korea and Saipan, and coming to terms with her parents’ shortcomings (Michelle Zauner). “Do you know what happens if you laugh while crying? Hair grows out of your butthole.” It was a constant truism Youngmi Mayer’s mother would say threateningly after she would make her daughter laugh while crying. Her mother used it to cheer her up in moments when she could tell Youngmi was overtaken with grief. The humorous saying would never fail to lighten the mood, causing both daughter and mother to laugh and cry at the same time. Her mother had learned this trick from her mother, and her mother had learned this from her mother before her: it had also helped an endless string of her family laugh through suffering. In I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying, Youngmi jokes through the retelling of her childhood as an offbeat biracial kid in Saipan, a place next to a place that Americans might know. She jokes through her difficult adolescence where she must parent her own parents: a mother who married her husband because he looked like white Jesus (and the singer of The Bee Gees). And with humor and irreverence and full-throated openness, she jokes even while sharing the story of what her family went through during the last century of colonialism and war in Korea, while reflecting how years later, their wounds affect her in New York City as a single mom, all the while interrogating whiteness, gender, and sexuality. Youngmi jokes through these stories in hopes of passing onto the reader what her family passed down to her: The gift of laughing while crying. The gift of a hairy butthole. Because throughout it all, the one thing she learned was one cannot exist without the other. And like a yin and yang, this duality is reflected in this whip-smart, heart-wrenching, and disarmingly funny memoir told by a bright new voice with so much heart and wisdom. We are excited to welcome renowned contemporary artist Simone Douglas who will take you on a compelling visual journey sharing her innovative environmental land work ‘Ice Boat,’ the driving force of a multi-year project. A paradoxical pairing of ice and desert, the Ice Boat tilts towards the heat of the sun, melting as it follows its arc across the sky and reforming into a ”sea” of water while regenerating the land. Ice Boat is situated on the ancient bed of a pre-historic ocean and was formed using sustainable energy delivered by the sun. Central to Douglas’s work is advocacy and advancement for the role of art as a key part of shaping and understanding the collective future. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the National Gallery of Victoria, in addition to being featured in international contemporary anthologies and in major publications including ArtForum, Blind Spot, and Art + Australia. Entry to this event is not guaranteed with Eventbrite reservation. Please arrive no more than 15-20 minutes before the event start time. Seating is first-come, first-served.
