Giorgia Lupi and Madeleine Garner discuss their new picture book for children—and adults—about the power of data. Information designer Giorgia Lupi and writer Madeleine Garner join us to discuss their new picture book for children—and adults—about the power of data. They will be in conversation with Michael Bierut, an award-winning graphic designer and partner at Pentagram. PLEASE NOTE: RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Seating is limited and will be first come, first served. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Can't attend?Order your signed copy(please specify that you would like it signed in the comments box at checkout). This is me, and only me. But what makes me...me? The world is full of numbers, details, and beautiful things to observe. But what do you take particular note of? What do you find the most interesting or worthy of being measured, documented, and drawn? What you choose to notice can teach you a lot about who you are and what you care about. And if you use symbols, colors and annotations to visualize and add context to your observations, you can make a beautiful portrait that tells the story of you! In This is Me, and Only Me Giorgia Lupi and Madeleine Garner show how everything we observe about the world around us can teach us something about who we are inside. Noticing what makes us happy, sad, or excited; seeing what makes us and our friends laugh; discovering that we all see the stars in the sky, but maybe we choose to remember them differently from a friend. All these details and many more can lead readers, young and adult alike, to take a closer look at what they notice about the world -- and therefore, themselves. Giorgia Lupi is an award-winning information designer whose work synthesizes data and storytelling in innovative ways to create unique and singular brand expressions. A partner at the international design consultancy Pentagram, she designs engaging data-driven visual narratives across print, digital and environmental media that create new insight and appreciation of people, ideas, and organizations. Her vibrant and inspiring design work, for clients such as Google, IBM, Gates Foundation, and The New York Times, empowers leading global organizations to achieve their mission through data-driven storytelling, and reflects her belief that data has the capacity to make us all more human—advancing our intelligence, engagement, and delight. One of the most lauded designers of her generation and a prominent voice in the field of data design, Lupi was the 2022 recipient of the National Design Award from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. In 2022 she also received an honorary doctorate from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and she has been commissioned for original art installations by MoMA, Museum of the City of New York, New York Botanical Garden, and TED. A former MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow, she is also a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council on New Metrics and a Fellow of the RSA. Madeleine Garner is a New York-based writer. Her play, “I Ragazzi,” co-written with her father, Broadway writer David Goldsmith, was published in 2023 by the Dramatists Play Service and is now available for licensing. Garner was accepted into the Spring 2023 Woodward Residency where she worked on and completed many children’s books. Garner received her B.A. in Art History and Italian Studies from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 2012. She resides with her husband, baby, and cat in Ridgewood, Queens. Michael Bierut has been a graphic designer for nearly fifty years. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning in 1980, his first job was in the office of Lella and Massimo Vignelli. He worked there for a decade, ultimately as Vice President for Graphic Design. In 1990, he became a partner in the New York office of Pentagram. His clients have ranged from the National Gallery of Art, Princeton University, Governors' Island, The Obama Presidential Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Wildlife Conservation Society, Poetry Magazine, Archewell, and Verizon. Michael was elected to the Alliance Graphique Internationale in 1989, installed in the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 2003, and awarded the profession’s highest honor, the AIGA Medal, in 2006. In 2008, he was named winner in the Design Mind category of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards. Among other academic appointments, he has been lecturer at the Yale School of Management and senior critic in graphic design at the Yale School of Art. As part of the latter class, he created the “100 Days Project,” an exercise involving the daily repetition of a single creative act which is now practiced worldwide. Michael is co-editor of the five-volume series Looking Closer: Critical Writings on Graphic Design and cofounded Design Observer, a blog of design and cultural criticism which now features podcasts on design, popular culture, and business. His books, which include 79 Short Essays on Design (2007), How to use graphic design to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, make people cry and (every once in a while) change the world (2015 and 2021) and Now You See It and Other Essays on Design (2018), have been translated into German, French, Korean, Chinese, Polish and Russian. A First Look: A Place For Us Showing and Q+A A Place for Us is a compelling 13-minute dance piece that blends ballet, contemporary, and theatrical elements to tell the powerful stories of three immigrants seeking a new life in America. Inspired by her family's journey from Mexico and Portugal, choreographer Danielle Diniz offers a deeply personal yet universally resonant portrayal of finding one’s place in a new land. This intimate first look at Accent Dance NYC's most recent NEXT commission offers a unique opportunity to experience the work before its official premiere. In addition to A Place for Us, the program will feature a lyrical contemporary ballet duet, La Bella Cubana, by acclaimed Cuban choreographer Pedro Ruíz, exploring themes of cultural identity and nostalgia. Audiences will also experience the vibrant energy of West African dance and live drumming based on traditional dance and music from Guinea. After the performance, attendees are invited to participate in a talk-back session with Diniz, providing an opportunity to delve deeper into the themes of the work and its connection to contemporary issues of immigration and identity. On Thursday, September 12, we welcome Mark Alice Durant to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Durant will be reading from his book Summer of the White Fox, and After as well as discussing the mission of Saint Lucy Books. He will have copies of Summer of the White Fox, and After available for sale throughout the evening. Don't miss your chance to get a signed copy! This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube page at 6pm. For six weeks, in the summer of 2019, a mysterious creature appeared every evening in Durant’s Baltimore neighborhood. Was it a biological anomaly, an apparition, a portentous sign, or all the above? The visitation of this ghostly entity prompted a season of reverie; in the dimming twilight, as the vulpine creature darted in and out sight, Durant reconsidered his own life narratives and questioned his insatiable desire to photographically capture the otherworldly visitor. In 2020, as the COVID pandemic forced a global redefinition of our notions of personal safety and collective responsibility, Durant faced his own serious health crisis as well as the illness and death of beloved family members. Durant’s episodic account of his hospitalizations and his dwindling ability to understand what was happening to and around him is as vivid as it is harrowing. Grief, fear, tenderness, wonder, dark humor, and the comforts of art and nature are inextricably bound in this photographic and narrative exploration of trauma and mystical transience. Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation. Mark Alice Durant is an artist and writer living in Baltimore. He is author of Summer of the White Fox, and After, Maya Deren, Choreographed for Camera, and 27 Contexts: An Anecdotal History in Photography. His essays have appeared in numerous journals such as Aperture, Art in America, Photograph Magazine, Dear Dave, and many catalogs, monographs, and anthologies including Rania Matar: She, Seeing Science: How Photography Reveals the Universe, and Vik Muniz Seeing is Believing. He has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, UCLA, University of New Mexico, the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, and is currently a professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Durant is publisher / editor of Saint Lucy Books. Banner image: Mark Alice Durant. Information Source: The Center for Photography at Woodstock | eventbrite

This is Fells Point and parking can be busy - plan ahead; we'll be there early in case you are too!No smoking of any kind is allowed on the pier or on the boat!About your Hosts: Katie Overbey (she/her)began her improv journey in 2018 under the guise of professional development as part of a class in grad school. She fell in love with the way improv could turn a group of science nerds into funny, cohesive performers and she's been hooked ever since. Katie has performed with various groups, including Babeprov in Baltimore and Game Knights at The Armory in NYC. She considers Highwire Improv her home base and when she's not doing improv, she's working as a food ingredient regulator, knitting, or snuggling her pets. Misty Letts (she/they) stepped into the improv pool 6 years ago and has not looked back. She got her footing at Baltimore Improv Group through curriculum and workshops from various BIG instructors of the form. Digging into opportunities to learn from so much talent including Don Fanelli (UCB), Kate Zelensky (UCB), and Travis Charles Ploeger (iMusical- WIT). She has also enjoyed playing with Maryland Improv Collective and can presently be found camped out on Highwire’s front stoop. Misty she’s and is also a they/them and can be found on two wheels tooling about town, so drive carefully! “Improv helps the world laugh, and listen” -Misty Barry Wright (he/him) is your dockside host and operations manager. He has trained in improv since 2017, including at Baltimore Improv Group, Hoopla Impro, and numerous online workshops. He performs with groups including Improv Jeoparty, Topiary, Important Screws, Whatever This Is, and Dreamweaver.
