Artist tour | Douglas Abdell: Intervalism and Other Mathematics | Ab-Anbar Gallery

Oct 12, 2024 (UTC+0)
London
Arts
Fine Art
Ab-Anbar is pleased to present “Douglas Abdell: Intervalism and Other Mathematics” by the prolific Málaga-based artist. The exhibition’s focus is two decades of sculpture, painting, and drawing from the late 60s - 80s, dominated not only by the systematic deconstruction and reconstruction of language, but also Abdell’s fascination with its tradition and evolution, deeply entangled with his Mediterranean roots and a reimagining of its ancient languages. Most of the exhibited works emerge from Abdell’s ‘Intervalist’ philosophy, a concept he articulated in his 1984 manifesto ‘Mirror Magnetik Interval’. This esoteric graphical magazine dissects the structure of numbers, letters, and the artist’s own alphabets – which draw heavy inspiration from the symbols of ancient phoenician and etruscan – to conceive of an internal structure, or a unified conception of things. The exhibition’s acrylic paintings and sculptures of bronze and welded-steel feature the same forms as throughout the manifesto, but also have threads that can be traced throughout Abdell’s preceding practice. As the artist states, “all of my work contains elements of its history and projections in its future,” whether that be the references to the ancient Mediterranean or his intensive and obsessive sculptural study; documents of which can be found saturating the walls of the exhibition’s underbelly downstairs, alongside new sculptures and drawings. Contextualising the Intervalist works are inclusions from his ‘Kryad’ sculptural series and ‘Phoenaes’ paintings amongst others, dealing with phonetic games and translations of phoneme into material, or vice-versa. Present, too, throughout the exhibition are traces of the heady period of cultural upheaval in New York in the 70s where Abdell made his work and rose to prominence, as well as the politics of the Middle East and the Mediterranean: namely his own ‘Fourth Punic war’, a cultural and linguistic war in which Rome becomes a metaphor for centralisation and imperialism. Ultimately, this exhibition demonstrates Abdell’s lifelong commitment to exploring the bond between language, form, and cultural intersections, presenting a prolific practice that reflects on the interconnectivity of all things to emerge with an artistic language instantly recognisable as his own. Gaia: By Night6.30pm - 9.00pm (selected evenings)Evening viewing of Gaia also provides an opportunity to see the Cathedral at night for a truly memorable ‘out of hours’ experience. Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface* the artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet, floating in three dimensions. The installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment. When presented indoors, the Earth artwork slowly revolves. A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning Composer Dan Jones is played alongside the sculpture. The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface. By standing 211m away from the artwork, the public will be able to see the Earth as it appears from the moon. *The imagery for the artwork has been compiled from Visible Earth series, NASA. Leslie Ewing-Burgesse is cursed. Yeah. She is. Like really, reaaaaalllly cursed. Absolutely riddled with curses. Yeahhhhhhh. Hahaha, uh oh, right? Hard to know what to say about that. Oh, another thing. Yeah, there’s more. You’re probably cursed too. Yeah, sorry. Yeah, it’s pretty bad news. But! There’s nothing that brings Leslie more joy than chatting about the weird and the spooky, and she has a sneaking suspicion that she can solve this... Leslie Ewing-Burgesse is a very silly, very existential, very tall, variably green-haired*, normal-level** Canadian comedian living in North London. * hair colour fades; laziness sometimes prevails ** for a Canadian “Funny and insightful, she is one to keep an eye on as she inevitably rises through the comedy scene.” - The Only Culture Vulture “… her slightly chaotic nature and gimmicks made it feel like I was down the pub with a friend telling me some stories.” - carlymay.co.uk WITH SUPPORT ACT(S) TBA. Reading Shakespeare can be pretty daunting, and so much of the best stuff is hidden behind what feels like impenetrable language. I've loved the Shakespeare I've read, but I find it hard to crack open my massive anthology out and just start reading when I'm also trying to live my life (and just about managing to pay rent lol). I've spoken to quite a few people who said that even just for the novelty, they'd like to read and discuss some Shakespeare plays and try and demystify the elements of the plays that make them seem inaccessible unless Tom Holland is flailing his arms about in a ruffled shirt as Romeo on the West End. I'm hoping that every month, we can try and tackle a new play. We can meet, relax and chat about the plays, discuss what we all thought about them, the good, the bad and everything in between, as well as it just being a nice break from being buffeted by people during peak time trips to Aldi in Peckham or the stress of holding people up on the bus when you can't tap in because TfL took £3.50 overnight so now you have to transfer money into your account before you get on and everyone behind you is tutting. In The Way Home, you get a strong feel for the way he operate on a variety of levels: referencing important paintings from art history, while telling us stories of our time―stories that all take place in the London borough of Hackney, where Hunter lives. What is perhaps his best-known photograph is of a young woman in a setting that alludes to Vermeer’s Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window. However, Hunter’s photo portrays a Woman Reading a Possession Order―a neighbor from the squatter’s scene who has just received an eviction notice. The work attracted so such attention from the media that the eviction ultimately never took place. With his eye for the unusual and exotic in everyday life, Hunter succeeds in capturing striking, remarkable snapshots of life in Great Britain today. We ask for a £5 payment at the event - cash, card or online Information Source: City of London & Cripplegate Photographic Society | eventbrite
